Episode VIII is "The Last Jedi"

My bet is a teaser in March with Beauty and the Beadt releasing.
Tying your trailer to big movies doesn't matter so much anymore. Everything is on YouTube anyway.

You won't get a teaser until the DVD/Bluray for Rogue One is out. No sooner. Rogue One's home video release coincides with Celebration in April. TFA had a teaser in April. Rogue One had a teaser in April. TLJ will have a teaser in April.

Mark Hamill isn't going to live forever and Disney's statement of Fisher left no question about where they stand on the issue of digital recreations.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Please have a long and prosperous life Mark Hamill

I don't recall Mark Hamill having anywhere close to the same battle with drugs and alcohol...

Jedis were a mistake.

Disney is turning SW into something less black and white, so it makes sense to get rid of the light side = good guys, dark side = bad guys notion. Gives them more freedom in the future.

edit: possible that The Last Jedi doesn't means he dies. It just means that's the focus of the movie, as in, the FO wants to get rid of the last jedi, and others want him to restart the order.

I hope by "Last" they mean it in plural. It sucks to only have one jedi around all the time. There should at least be a few survivors from Kylo's massacre or some force sensitives that can still be trained but haven't yet.

We won't be able to call the second best Star Wars movie just "Jedi" anymore. :(

While I disagree with your ranking, that is a little tidbit that's interesting to think about for a minute or two.

For years, many people have used "Jedi" in spoken conversation as shorthand for ROTJ. At the end of this year, that will no longer be convenient. They'll have to switch to, "Return." Some people already say it that way, but the rest will now follow.

I honestly think it's a bit baffling how so many people are hating Lucasfilm for referencing the older movies/keeping running gags going while many of those same people are just repeating the same old RLM jokes over and over again. Completely missing the irony of what they're doing. Some people here really lack self reflection, and it's getting annoying.

IT BROKE NEW GROOOUUUUUUUNNNNNDDDDD

I CLAPPED BECAUSE I REMEMBERED STAR WARS!!!

I KNOW WHAT THAT IS!!!

AT-ST! AT-ST! AT-ST!

BOYHOOD!!! IT TOOK TWELVE YEARS TO MAKE!!!

I'll keep it alive until my inevitable ban.

Comedy is dead.

I get that Star Wars can get too self-referential guys. It's a legitimate criticism. But you're not in any place to complain about that if all you can do is repeating someone else's 'jokes' over and over again. It's not cute.

Why are people going crazy that Jedi must mean more than one?

This literally takes place directly after TFA. I doubt we'll get a time-jump mid movie (which has never happened in a mainline SW film). So of course Rey isn't a Jedi and Luke is the only one.

Maybe by Episode IX she'll be one, but no way is that possible in VIII when she just found out she had the ability... maybe a few hours before meeting Luke on Ahch-To.

There are still a ton of people who don't watch online trailers. Attaching them to popular movies gets the word out to those types. No one is going to a film they don't care about to see trailers thanks to the internet, but the cinema is still where a lot of people see trailers for the first time.

Also, they can still show another clip in April. TFA already had a teaser in 2014, so this whole campaign is starting a bit later.

I'm not actually sure if this is true anymore.

It was more of a point on everyone from that generation needing to move on sooner or later.

I think to a certain extent we'ree conditioned by the old EU that Luke was going to be around forever while people died around him.

Very evocative title. I really like it.

It's interesting, because there was a line in the opening scrawl of Episode VII that said something like, "Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi."

I'm wondering if Rey has any interest in becoming a Jedi at all. I think she was fine with helping the Resistance and delivering the Lightsaber to Luke Skywalker, but I never got the impression that she wanted to pursue the life of a Jedi. I don't think it necessarily means that Luke is going to die either. Perhaps it's indicating that at the end of the film, Rey is going to reject the path of the Jedi, and carving out her own destiny, leaving Luke as the last Jedi. The ending of the movie would look grim, with Luke thinking that the Jedi are truly gone, as he is the last, and his students, Rey and Ben, have no interest in re-establishing the Jedi Order. The First Order could be looking primed for victory, and that would lead us into Episode IX.

In either case, I'm excited to have a title, and December can't get here fast enough!

Here's my stab at it. A little rough (too busy, color distribution is off, letter spacing is iffy), might tweak it a bit later if I care.

Updated it. Fixed the spacing on the S and T (didn't like them basically merging) and went for a better balance with the colors. On one hand I actually kind of like the splotch of blackness on the left when I compare it to red all around, but on the other it looks kind of busy and doesn't work as well with darker backgrounds. Maybe something in-between would work better. A bit darker all around but not as much full-on blackness.

Not to sound biased, but I kind of like the general look of it. Would love it if they put out something similar (if more professional of course :P) for official marketing. Doubt they will though.
