Estherwood officer (Louisiana) to resign after racist social media post

Estherwood’s police chief, Ernest Villejoin, confirmed to HuffPost Wednesday that Welsh had resigned and said the “situation has been taken care of.”

They let him resign rather than firing him? Probably to let him keep his benefits/pension. Yeah you took care of your buddy alright.

Not surprising from the backwoods of Louisiana. I haven't spent extensive time in Mississippi but dregs of Louisiana is home to some of the most backwards places I've ever been. I feel sorry for people who can't get out

I dont understand why he quit. He could have kept on doing his job I'm sure. Did he feel bad about the two week paid vacation he was gonna get?

Again, it's almost funny how much in common extremist Muslims and racists have in common. They love guns. They love religion. And now, dating someone outside of your station could be a death sentence.

Can't they just get along?

This is the reason people from New Orleans (like myself) tend to think of the rest of Louisiana like some kind of no-man's-land that is stuck in 1960...and not really attached to us. (Except it is...)

Hey Texas, would you like some additional territory?

New Orleans famously lacks race issues.

This guy is a special kind of idiot.

"It's not illegal to post or share something on Facebook"

No kidding....that's why you weren't arrested mr police officer.......

Hey, I've been calling for them to replace that statue of Robert E. Lee with one of Bruce Lee for a while now...
We're not perfect, but we're working on it.... And we're certainly not the rest of the state.

This is when my response is "I can't even."

The lack of personal self awareness to post something like that is shocking. Even if you are a closet racist you would have to know that you are just outing yourself.

Holy shit..I didn't see the word extremist, and thought you had lost your mind LMAO. Second time someone compared Muslims to a police officer today.

While it's important to highlight the bad apples, it's also important to remember that good cops look the other way when it comes to things like this, which could be outed internally. Because, reasons.

In my experience, clearly anecdotal, New Orleanians tend to vastly overestimate their progressiveness compared to other cities in the state. Especially Lafayette and, to a lesser extent, Baton Rouge.

I think everyone would prefer to live in New Orleans than somewhere like Natchitoches, Mamou, Morgan City, or something, but I've also encountered the worst overt racism I've ever seen in New Orleans and its suburbs.

In fact when controlling for trends of urbanization leading to increased progressiveness, I think New Orleans actually probably underpreforms on most issues.

You know we haven't even commented on how sexist this is too

The fear of the "black man staking your precious white women" is as rooted in sexism as it is racism

Guys don't click on the second links where they show more memes that he shared. It's about as bad as this one, with transmisogyny mixed in too :\

Fuck this asshole.

Jesus what the fuck was this guy thinking? Was he thinking he was really clever to essentially say, "Oh my daughter likes black people? Guess I better drown her."? Fuck I don't understand this kind of idiocy.

I don't get these people.

If you are racist, and you hold a public job like that why would you out yourself with stupid posts on Facebook?

Its like they can't help themselves.

Because the act of being a racist/bigot requires a certain level of ignorance and stupidity, so it's not all that surprising to see that bleed over into other aspects of their lives. They are idiots.

Who was it in that thread yesterday talking about "The KKK is no longer relevant!". Yeah, they just put away their hoods and joined police forces.

Woah woah woah... You're telling me that Lafayette, bastion of right wing conservatism in Louisiana, is more progressive than New Orleans? Really?
The city that elected Clay Higgins to Congress? And Charles Boustany?

Either conservatism has nothing to do with racism, or New Orleans is super progressive compared to Lafayette.

No mercy for race traitors.

The first defense was "it's technically not against the law". Think about where they might have heard that before.

Who even thinks that's a joke, let alone funny?

The people who create, post and share it; bigots.

Like there's a lot of dark shit not getting processed by the thousands that either shared, saw this or some variation of it and somehow still giggle about it when they think of it. Anti-blackness, violent misogyny, severe lack of empathy, toxic masculinity, ugly beliefs about white "genocide" by way of interracial relationships. I mean god damn.

It stuns me that he was surprised at any backlash. "I was just sharing racism on social media y'all."

That's the most telling part; fucker really felt protected by Americas's increasing overt white nationalism that posting a meme about killing black babies seemed like a good idea at the time, even though he's an assistant chief at his police department

You already know he complains about people "being too sensitive these days" and "I'm the least racist person"

“Well, I’m sorry for what happen. Ya [sic] have a blessed day.”

"Let's just do it and be legends, man."

Looks like he switched from diet racism to the good ole hard stuff.

How does anyone in their right mind think that is ok to post. Ever.

What does he expect would happen if he posted that online for anyone to see. I just don't understand people/racists. He literally guaranteed himself to be jobless and deserved public ridicule.

Pretty disgusting meme.

there is a long standing trope within racists that their white daughters dating a black man is like the worst thing that could ever happen. I wouldn't be surprised if many would rather have their children die than date out side the race.

Trump emboldens these people to wear their Klan hoods in public without fear of repercussion.

Also see: "outrage culture", "lighten up, snowflakes it's just a joke", "what happened to free speech?", and "people are offended by everything nowadays".

Fuck this asshole.

While the memes he shared are disgusting, they're common and mainstream "conservative" republican beliefs. There is nothing he shared that is surprising that an old white southern police chief would believe

"Where's my white privilege?"
"Michelle Obama is a man"
"Muslims are trash"

This is standard stuff that we all read coming from conservative republicans all day, all over the internet

...That's even worse than I thought it'd be. At least he got resigned, though I would have preferred if his ass got fired.

"Ya'll have a blessed day"

I'm surprised that there honestly haven't been any "triggered, outrage culture shutting down free speech like Nazis" type posts in this very topic yet. It's early though.

You didn't understand that post, obviously it's not more progressive. What I was saying is that people from New Orleans, and in my experience white people are particularly prone to this, tend to vastly overestimate how much better New Orleans is on this front.

Ironically part of this comes from the very problem with folding hinterlands into a city that you were complaining about earlier. Except it makes even less sense here because there are two cities in the district.

Your last point doesn't make much sense to me. Conservatism has something to do with racism, that's part of why I'm saying New Orleans isn't as progressive as many seem to think it is.

It's not like New Orleans has a reputation for not being racist. I'd wager its association with progressivism probably comes mostly from the fact that the city has traditionally cared little about white people's sexual orientation.

Sadly this toxic mentality runs rampant throughout this entire nation and pretty much the rest of the world. And every time it manifests itself in public eye, I'd like to believe it'll be met with extreme resistance all the way. As long as conscious life forms exist.

Because fuck racism and prejudice in all forms.

Having to defend a piece of shit police officer and hate speech? Double the trouble, that's too hot for most of them I would imagine.

When your environment is so entrenched with racism that you think it's normal to share a meme like that as a police officer...

Fuck, if he thought "kill a black kid cause your daughter likes him" was fine meme to share in a public Facebook page, think about the racist emails he sent to fellow police in private

And these guys are the same ones running up the interracial porn viewer numbers.
