Etrian Odyssey IV coming to Europe this Spring

I'm starting thinking it's Atlus itself.

Yeah: just like Code of Princess, the game could be released exclusively on eShop from Atlus itself.

That might be a possibility. I haven't seen the Direct myself, did Shibata specify that CoP will be released only on the eShop? If he did and didn't say the same for EO4 we can assume that it'll likely see a retail release at least.

I kinda hope it's not Ghostlight to be honest. If it's them "Spring" might become "Summer" and then "Fall". :/

Maybe Rising Star? They surprisingly picked up Virtue's Last Reward last year, maybe they did the same with EO.

When will we find out who it is? I'm curious.

Also, this instead of Soul Hackers is lame (Though I imagine this will sell better).
Soul Hackers is a few months away, they may want to wait until closer to or after release before saying anything.

Never stop using that ghost, Nich.
Maybe Europeans will finally get their wish and Atlus will open a branch over there!

Given they were integrated into Index I'd hope they'd at least have the resources to go through with it now.

super happy about this, and even if it ends up an eShop only release it bodes well for other Atlus games getting localized.
i just found a copy of EO2 in Cex for £10 the other day as well, can't be many of them out in the wild in the UK.

Etrian Odyssey 4 was presented apart from the e-shop releases like "Code of Princess", so I assume this will be a packaged retail release. I'm very happy to see it come to Europe, so I'm trying not to think about the bonus art-book and soundtrack US is getting... (hope, hope)

Still, so many wonderful RPG news in this direct !

Also, this instead of Soul Hackers is lame.

EO4 is being released in 2 weeks in America, while SH won't be released until 2 more months. So it makes more sense to pick and release the game that is already finished.

SH could be out in the second half of the year. Just hoping that Ghostlight aren't the ones releasing EO4, because they seem to have enough problems getting used to handle 3DS games, they have yet to finish DSO, they have DS2 (although for DS) after that, and then it's when I think they'll do SH.

Although with Strange Journey not being picked up by anyone, I'm a little worried about SH's fate.

I went back to October's Direct where Devil Survivor was shown. If you take a look at the very end of the video, you'll see the copyright notices. In the case of DS:O it says: "(c) Index Corporation 2012, Published by Ghostlight" (Likewise, it says "(c) Spike Sunsoft, Licensed and published by Rising Star Games" for Virtue's Last Reward).

In the copyright notices of today's Direct it simply states: "(c) Index Corporation 2013, Produced by Atlus"

So, either they changed the way the copyrights are listed or the publisher wants to remain unknown for now or Atlus is indeed publishing it themselves in Europe.

Atlus thanks you for your continued purchases of their games

I guess I should be thankfull for them helping me saving a lot of money than.

I'm not sure if you have an answer to this, or want to say it, but how come Atlus never set up a EU branch?

to quote zelda "It's a secret to everybody".
I always thought most of their games were selling fine here, even if the process of getting them was tiresome most of the time.

they have? oO when did that happen? must've completely missed that. could you provide any links?

Early last year maybe? Maybe 2011? Not sure though. But Atlus pretty much only exists in name for the most part, Index has control of it. Though I could be wrong about the details, but yeah, Index gobbled em up.

Probably just an eShop release then. I'm okay with that. Atlus recently did DD-only releases of Growlanser Wayfarer of Time and Gungnir on the EU PSN Store, and also did Persona 1 PSP in the past, so this isn't exactly something new to them in the broader sense, but it seems they're adopting the same policy for 3DS too: try to find a distributor, and if they can't, go ahead and do a digital only release themselves.

Going forward, I'm kind of hoping that if releasing the games DD only in Europe is lucrative for them then they'll simply skip over the local distributor step, especially if it means we have closer release dates. Though I am aware some distributors over here have worked their asses off to minimise the pain of this; NISA have done a good job of getting P4G over here in a half-decent time, and Ghostlight did an amazing job getting P2: Innocent Sin out within 2 months of the US release. Physical games are rad and all, but not when I run the risk of being spoiled, or having my interest deflated/diminished due to the delay. I've pretty much lost all interest in Devil Survivor on 3DS because it's taking so long to come out over here, and there's nothing I like less than seeing a game on sale here "brand new" for £29.99 when it's hitting the bargain bin in the US for $20 or less. *cough*P4A*cough*

This is most promising news.

I am still very reluctant to pick up an EU system just yet, but certainly more localisation announcements like this cannot hurt. I will be keeping an eye out on the details of this release, very interested in seeing who is publishing it and in what format (physical/digital/both).

Really, really hope this is a retail release. As much as I want to play these games I won't buy them as an Eshop release when they're available via retail around the world.

Just look at the listed publisher and copyright information on many recent Atlus games, it'll say Index Digital Media. Says it all right there.

I missread that part about "index" being a company name. I thought he was talking about the european company index.

Which means, there is still nothing that would indicate an european headquarter yet.
And I was geting my hopes up :/

Nintendo is publishing this? maybe they should pick up all of Atlus games (*cough* Soul Hackers) too, waiting for some incompetent niche publisher to maybe publish these two years later (I'm looking at you Overclocked) is pretty bad.

woohoo good for the EU peeps.

It's coming in 12 days so I'll make sure I enjoy the game enough for the rest of you :D

Yeah, I saw that and thought it was promising for the 3DS.

I am ok with it being digital only.Actually, I would love if this meant day 1 digital releases on the EU for Atlus' games from now on.Digital day 1 is miles better than retail some day or never.

The ideal situation would have been a full fledged EU branch, but let's be realistic here.

With a digital-only release I would hope for a nice price, even though the whole Persona 4 Arena disaster made it painfully clear that Index would sell their own grandmother for an extra buck.
For no more than 30Euro I'd be there day one.

I still don't understand why it is not realistic for Atlus to do this this though? Or at least to have an official partner/publisher or whatever in Europe to release their games here, Instead of what we have now.

I feel like it's pretty late for such a risk at this point. Some (actually many!) years ago it could and dare I say it would have worked. Now, with the rise of the digital distribution, it is more logical for a company to take the safest, easiest route on this matter.

I totally agree with you though on the part that things need to change.Situations like P4A are bad for everyone.

the amount of money I'm going to spend on 3DS and WiiU this year is starting to become a bit embarassing

This was my personal mega-news of Valentine's Nintendo Direct ^^ With this, Fire Emblem and Project X Zone, three of my most wanted games will come to Europe and I literally could not stop smiling... but...

...I'm actually not going to buy full-price download games even though I absolutely love the Etrian Odyssey-series and would also love to play Code of Princess - But really, I'd rather save up and buy an US-system in the future. I have my reasons for my complete distrust download-only games (even more so with Nintendo's current way to handle accounts and stuff), so I never have and never will spend more than 10-15 bucks on something "virtual" as long as there at least is an alternative way to get the game (in this case: buying a second system for US-imports). But that's another topic...

As I said, I love Etrian Odyssey, I followed news of EOIV since it was first shown and I'm looking forward to get this game Day 1 when it hits retail :) I already listen to the OST of the game and hopefully, many others will follow down the dungeons this time so that it will pay off for whoever it is who releases the game this time ^^

NISA huh? Thus ends the speculation about Atlus and Europe.
I hope this is a publishing deal which makes NISA a publisher for a couple of Atlus games in Europe.

NISA is listed as publisher. They already published P4: Golden in Europe, so it's not exactly surprising.
And they'll at least release the games within a year =P, sorry Ghostlight but you've gotta speed up your publishing.
Maybe you're referring to Atlus instead of NISA, which you bolded.
Probably is referring to Atlus, NISA has been publishing plenty in Europe as well, before the Tecmo-Koei (takeover?) publishing their games.

Would be kind of ironic if NISA helped get Atlus established properly in Europe, similar to how Atlus got NISA started in the first place.

Though I think NISA just reliably publishing the games in Europe should work nicely too, they seem to be a hell of a lot speedier than some of the other publishers there, which at least for playing in English is good.
