Eurogamer gives Dungeon Keeper 1/10

Metro said:
If video games had been a part of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four this would be the only one allowed.

DAAAAAAAMN.

That's high praise, even by EA standards. <3 that Metro review.

I learnt about this from the funny pics thread :

pls EA, I used to love DK so much

You know how F2P game survive on those "Whale" Players...

I wonder which stupid fucking whales will take up this as their feeding grounds
They'll be on the endangered list within a few days I guarantee you that, a week to be classified as "EXTINCT!"

An excellent review, honest without being kneejerky, which many of the protestations against free-to-play can seem like (whether justified or not, alas)

what are the best games in this "genre"?
I have only played a few, they were all terrible and dungeon keeper doesnt seem to be that much different.

On Twitter I saw earlier that they were place 1 and 2 at some point.

I think these threads should also be used to promote what seems to be a true Dungeon Keeper successor called War for the Overworld: https://wftogame.com/

Yep. War for the Overworld looks spectacular and I'm hoping those guys will benefit from all this DK drama.

I mean..Jesus Christ, Facebook's Dungeon Overlord is actually playable and doesn't enforce microtransactions...a casual facebook DK rip off is ten times the sequel Dungeon Keeper mobile is. That's just sad.

EA goin strong for a golden poo three-peat, I see.

Stuff like this is absolutely disgusting. Time to hit up GoG to replay the originals, I guess.

Dungeon Keeper, Dungeon Keeper 2, Evil Genius and maybe Startopia.

So, am I right to assume that you need to buy some sort of microtransactions to make them speed up? No other way around it?

You need gems to speed shit up. Gems can be purchased in bulk for real money. They can also be mined in-game but

the amount of gems mined from each square can be counted on your fingers, while every gem transaction costs in the hundreds.

Dungeon Keeper, Dungeon Keeper 2, Evil Genius and maybe Startopia.

I'm sorry, I meant these mobile building sims like cash of clans, tiny tower etc. which this new dungeon keeper mobile game seems to be based on
are there any actual good ones? and what are they doing better than dungeon keeper?

I just went from Anger (at someone giving DK 1/10), to Happiness (at discovering there was a new DK), to utter dismay (after reading the review)

Damn you, EA.

I love how the Metacritic score keeps going down and down now that non-iOS-only websites are reviewing the game.

Sad fate for Dungeon Keeper. If it's truly a Clash of Clans Clone... I tried out CoC. That was one of the worst "games" I've ever tried. Un-installed almost immediately. Dungeon Keeper deserved better.

EA starting off 2014 strong I see. A good sign of things to come.

How is a company with 0 positive brand recognition able to still be one of the most successful video game publishers?

Haha I really though you meant the original game. Yeah no idea. Everyone of these looks awful to me. They are all just busywork with timers that try to suck money out of you.

Really shows just how completely fucked the mobile game enthusiast press is when they're giving this atrocity 7s and 8s

did they even play it or were they just born with hearts full of evil?

Backyard Monsters was the first one and still seems to be the best, thanks to lesser focus on micro and lots of good humor. But honestly, those are all terrible titles. Their base building sucks, in most of them you can't even control units when attacking. Just play regular RTS-es. On mobile this means unfortunatelly going back to some old titles. But there's plenty good stuff there. Like mobile The Settlers

Funnily enough Age of Empires Online was somewhat similiar to Clash of Clans, but it was a lot better, deeper and with more gameplay. It just shouldn't have been called AoE.

I'd very much like a link to a good mobile game review site. Most I've seen are miserable places that give good reviews to microtransaction-heavy trash.

EA, if you're wondering why people hate you... THIS IS WHY. With bugs at least you can come up with lame excuses, but this is just shit, and you're smearing it over a niche series that no one who plays these F2P garbage dumps will care about.

Touch Arcade aren't so bad (1 out of 5):

Touch Arcade being like the only one mobile review site with integrity is also weirding me out. lol

The benefits of having lots of heavyweight IPs and developers locked down. People may hate EA, but they're still going to buy the next Madden/FIFA/Mass Effect/Dragon Age/whatever regardless. Not to mention their... 'influence' on the gaming press when it comes to whipping up hype for new things like Titanfall.

This is why I no longer buy EA games anymore, because they pull shit like this. What happened to the Dungeon Keeper series is just depressing :(

Gamasutra had a good one that was shut down a few years back (along with GameSetWatch, sniffle).

So, how has DK Gold held up?

Christ that sounds awful.

If they just sold the game for $10 maybe I'd buy it, as it sounds fairly decent once you strip out the F2P shit. But of course they would never do that.

yup, thats exactly what this is.
Im a bit surprised by the reactions here, it was obvious to me since the first screenshots that it would be this kind of non-game. given clash of clans huge success, there seems to be a market for it.
