Eurogamer gives Dungeon Keeper 1/10

Well i tweeted peter moore a article by kotaku that was referred to jim sterling his review and said to him i hope your proud of destroying my memories of a fantastic game.

Yep, and going back and buying the old Dungeon Keeper games, as many have suggested in this thread, is also contributing to the problem. Guess where that money goes?

EA knows they can shit out garbage like this and take money from the oblivious IOS audience, while also hitting the nostalgia button of hardcore gamers and tricking them into buying another copy of a game they bought 15 years ago.

Well, they didn't release this monstricity on PC. Maybe increased sales of original games will make them reconsider doing another PC entry?

In a situation like this, would it be considered morally wrong to hack the game and get everything for free/no wait?

It would be morally wrong to give it even a minute of your playtime under any circumstances.

Edit: Okay maybe it's hyperbole to say it's morally wrong. But it's definitely foolish.

If the OG DK makes more money than the mobile abomination then that would send a nice message.

If huge numbers of people are willing to buy exploitative garbage then it's not hard to see why devs make exploitative garbage. The cynical part of my brain is thinking that maybe the audience and the developers deserve each other. But it's way too easy for this to spill over into games I might actually care about, so it has to stop.

What an utter disaster of a remake that wants unfortunate people to spend money on. The fact that "you do not lose" in this game makes it an ultimately waste of time with no real challenge. Why make the game where you have to WAIT or BUY shit that is required before actually playing the real thing?

Fuck EA for doing that, they deserve a score lower than 1.

Even if you did that, there is no game or skill here. Timers are so embedded in the game that actual skill has been removed. So, get rid of the timers, and all you end up with is a dungeon building application. Kind of like if you removed the timers from Tiny Tower.

And I find it baffling that so many gaffers seem to like it based on the OT.
When I tried it it seemed to be similar to Dungeon Keeper mobile.

Have I missed something?

Serious question not being snarky.

I'm completely baffled as well. How anyone who isn't a complete schlub could enjoy using that game. It's the exact same thing as Dungeon Keeper... zero skill, all timers.

Like I said before, some people on GAF use Tiny Tower and like it as well.

They are the problem.

I have played a few of these 'time management' style games and still play Simpsons tapped out. I gave Dungeon Keeper a few days, in an attempt to like it, but in the end I had to delete it. It does not have anything going for it, and the missions have hardly any interactivity, which was the whole point of the original games.

"EA Games, Charging everything"

Should be their moto :(

I still can't believe how they mistreat their old IPs like this. Is till remember when the rumors popped up that there was coming anew Dungeon Keeper game. Sigh...

Microtransactions/Mattricks/In-App purchases, whatever you want to call them - they are a plague.

And its no surprise that we see more and more games being designed around them, or games having their existing designs coerced into the microtransaction mold.

We give these practices an inch and they end up spreading everywhere. Thats how this stuff works. Every time.

Hopefully all of this will implode in a few years when people notice that this kind of stuff is more expensive than ordinary gaming

Wait has anybody played this? Cause if not I promise it's even worse than you think. It's unplayable without spending massive amounts of cash

well the geek philosophy is flexible on that one. Once you have the software legally on your device, modding it to test its features blah blah blah. I don't think God would hold it against you. EA might object though.

But who are you gonna believe? EA or God?

For all the (deserved) bitching about this game, it will still show up in the top grossing lists in no time.

Why? Because there are idiots out there who *will* pay for this shit. Not only that, they'll give it 5* reviews which will doubtless draw in successive waves of suckers.

...I put way too much time into Star Wars Tiny Tower. At a certain point, you realize you're playing just to unlock a tiny piece of art that you could Google in about two seconds. The only skill you can brag about is that you wasted way too much time on a game. So I deleted it. Wish iIhad done it much sooner.

Can you explain to me how you find spending your time using Simpson's Tapped Out is worth it to you?

I have spent time creating my town, and unlocking free stuff to continue building and growing my town. I don't spend much time on it unless there is an event going on. It only takes 5 minutes to check in once or twice a day and collect the money, which will come in handy when they add more free content in future updates.

It's not that high at the moment, it could go either way, but I doubt it'll be nearly as successful as EA hopes. The most successful F2P games seem to come out of nowhere, like Candy Crush. From what I understand, Plants Vs. Zombies 2 underperformed quite a bit, and it's a much more popular brand than DK and the monetization was pretty mild in comparison.

It's like they're begging to win the golden poo this year. This is absolutely disgusting and, of course, they're abusing the F2P system again. The people I really feel sorry for are the fans of this series who were actually hoping for a great game but instead got this pile of dog garbage.

I'm sorry, I meant to say- how is playing Simpson's Tapped Out, which is essentially the exact same game as Dungeon Keeper, better in your mind? You said that you didn't like Dungeon Keeper because it was skill-less and exploitative and completely dependent on timers... but Tapped Out is exactly the same...

i was very excited when I first heard dungeon keeper would be coming to the ipad... but eesh. the fucked up thing is this type of game would be a perfect fit for the device, and could even be, gasp, a comprehensive, deep play experience, but now it's just gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems gems

There is a certain amount of fun in tapped out of being able to create your own Springfield and it is satisfying to unlock more characters/buildings. Got really old fast for me though.

I didn't even know there was a new Dungeon Keeper and to learn that not only is there one, but it's a micro-transaction riddled mess in the space of 30 seconds is heartbreaking to say the least...

What the hell, EA. I wait nearly 15 years for a new D.K and this is what you deliver.

Stuff like this makes me convinced the universe hates me. I have been asking for a new Dungeon Keeper for a long time and I get this. I also wanted a new Breath of Fire and that also turned out badly as well. I finally understand the saying be careful what you wish for.

Edit

Thanks to this thread I will be keeping an eye on War for the Overworld now.

For real, I had no idea. Fucking christ EA is so awful

The worst part is they had a whole team of developers waste time developing this...

This is a perfect case of "I'd rather have no Dungeon Keeper than this".

Those poor developers can never get this time back... and you know they all hated the game as well.

EA really couldn't stand Microsoft taking all the attention and hype for that golden poo away from them. They're going for the three-peat harder than Jordan's Bulls did.

I am not sure whether or not people are actually hating on the realtime-progression genre as a whole, the fact that they used dungeon keeper for an entry in that genre or on particularly excessive use of IAPs in this particular title.

I think it's not good to just be flat out conflating all three things. There are 'free-2-wait' games that I actually enjoy without spending much money on them (~$5).

Because Tapped Out has a lot more balance to its waiting time. The idea is the same, yes, but the execution is completely different. Plus it is pretty well written and they add new content continuously.

The sad thing is that this cancer will slowly creep in core gaming.

Can't wait for the inevitable F2P market crash.

When everything is F2P then there will not be enough money going around to support them so it will become a solid business model for only a few games. Just like Sub based MMO's have pretty much disappeared because WoW owns the majority of the market. We already see games like Hawken and Tribes feel the weight of the F2P model not supporting them effectively.

It's unavoidable, any arcade owner already knows how "pay while you play" ends.

But the real mystery in this story is: where is Nintendo? Because F2P games -once unmasked- are pretty much marketing kryptonite: they are scams or covert gambling aimed squarely at children and mentally disabled people, with the nod of Google and Apple to boot. Where is the clear advertising that points 3DS games are actually fun, are safe for children, less expensive in the long run, and you don't need to wait a freaking week to make a move?

Edit: But this goes for the whole industry, and indies especially: why "Microtransactions-free" isn't pushed as a marketing point? I may end up buying games having a slogan like that just for making a statement, much like i buy games with interesting female leads even if i don't plan to play them.
