Eurogamer gives Dungeon Keeper 1/10

1 out of 10?

That's still a million times more than what Metro Central gave it.

I get the criticism. Taking an established hardcore franchise and slapping on F2P is the fastest way to alienate the original fan-base.

But if this is a Clash of Clans clone, how can there be so many fans of Clash of Clans? How is that game so popular? What do people on this forum miss that makes these games so addictive to non-gamers?

Its like the game cookie clicker. It sticks in people's brains, this idea of expanding, progressing, getting better, even if its just by tapping a mouse key. There's some innate stuff in the brain these games have hooked into.

Would you eat a cake with shit on it?

Have you played this game? Besides what the fuck does that have to do with what I wrote? The game is getting a crItical bashing so I downloaded it and played the first 30 minutes to see how peoples arguments against it hold up.

I can emotionally seperate Dungeon Keeper the brand from this game as I've never played the original. Right now the game is essentially Megapolis with a dungeon skin and some tower defense components.

Mythic is committed to continuously fine tuning the player experience based upon fan feedback. We’re looking at a ton of data right now to help inform that: media reviews, comments, and reviews from players, and a bunch of in-game data like downloads, and engagement. It’s too early for us to get an accurate sense of what changes might be needed, but we didn’t make this game for ourselves, we made it for the players. We know that you can never please everyone, but we want this to be a game that most of our intended audience enjoys.
Welp, this comment. Incredible how much this says.

Have you played this game?

Well, to stick with the metaphor, you wouldn't taste a cake with shit on it to be absolutely certain it was bad. With paymium games, we already know they are bad and designed to pester the fuck out of people in order to get them to buy in-game currency for fraud prices.

It's morally on par with poker machines - designed to get people hooked and suck their wallets dry.

At least a cake with shit on it doesn't lure people in first.

Here's a screen from the Play Store

Sorry for the language but I can't change it even logging out.

Between 600.000 and 1M installations. You can see the ratings even without translations.. I guess they're right about these. Users don't care, they're used to it. Someone even complains the game is too expensive, having spent more than 40€ in 6 months. But he likes it. Four stars out of five.

Should we even care? Their customers love it.

Fucking whales are killing us.

I want you guys to know they are complete liars. It's impossible to not rate the game a 5 if you use the in-game vote thing. If you choose 1-4 stars, you are taken to a support ticket like thing instead of giving an actual rating, if you choose 5, it will go to the rating meter in the app stores.

Seriously? What in the fuck. Serious scumbag moves happening here.

There is a reason why I hate you EA, but thanks for making it more clear than ever.

I think we should care, but the mobile audience is bending backwards and ruining it for the rest of us. So in the end, it will be us who "are wrong".
I know some people who are proud of playing PvZ2 "without shelling a single dollar, and it's free!". I honestly didn't even bother downloading it, I know me not downloading a game on the Play Store won't make a difference in terms of numbers but I don't really care. I'm currently replaying Revengeance on PS3 after buying it on 360 and this time it cost me ZERO. I pay the price of a packet of cigarettes per month, 5€, to play games for free.

The whales can keep paying, when my favourite games will be infested I'll do the only thing I can, find a new hobby, there's not much I can do.

Well they're basically saying they follow the market. Who are we to blame them? They're not artists, they just follow money. Everyone in the industry does, they do it a little more.

The intended audience is casual iphone players who otherwise play Tapout, Clash of Clans and the like.

Casual is now not just mechanics but is also defined by time investment. These games are not meant to soak up 8 hours straight of time but 5 minutes here and there between living life. It is the equivalent of browsing your Facebook feed but you are clicking to get gold and making a move.

Yeah, taken like an ordinary game and continuous playing the monetization is gross but for drop in drop out the design actually makes a weird sort of sense. It actually encourages you to leave and do something else and by doing that they know you will come back and see the progress that has happened while you are away.

Devils Advocate here to the guy who said he paid 40 euro for 4 month of on and off fun that is a pretty good dollar to time entertainment ratio. Some $60 games don't supply that.

End of the day, if the game was called Dungeon Digger this wouldn't even be a thing. It is simply specific branding that has caused a furor.

I'm guessing they don't allow for 0's, cause that's what it should have gotten. The game is a fucking travesty.

The game deserves a 0, they are just lucky the Eurogamer scale doesn't go lower.

It's probably been said already, but the end of the review states the reason:
Let's be generous. Those glimpses of the game Dungeon Keeper used to be are enough to earn one point. You can have the rest for 800 gems.

This is why crowdfunding is going to be so important going forward. A publicly owned video game company's MO is to make money, not necessarily quality games. If people want to buy shallow crap en masse then they're pretty much obligated by their shareholders to make shallow crap.

Oh my god seriously...? Hahahaha.

You *can* do what he did in the video and get that result but there is actually things you can do that take seconds instead, like regular digging, building, creating troops, setting traps, attacking, defending, researching spells, etc. It was that video that sent me to download the game in the first place to see of it was really that bad. Turns out it isn't.

hmmh, exactly what is wrong with "expensive" microtransactions? as i've said a million times before but people don't seem to take notice, if you can't afford them, DON'T BUY THEM. let us who can enjoy the premium experience. the actual travesty here is the incessant whining by "gaming journalists" and entitled bum gamers who think they should be able to afford every game (maybe you shouldn't even own a smartphone or tablet if chump change of tens of dollars scare you), and the effect this ridiculous outcry could have on EA's stock prices (which would hurt the industry).

whatever, keep crying. i'm enjoying this game a lot, so much better than the 1997 version which i couldn't even bring to board meetings or play in the limo.

$79.99/100

Let these plebs hate on the game while eating their stale bread with tepid water. We can enjoy this masterpiece on my yacht while dining on the finest beluga caviar.

What is wrong? How about them deliberately breaking the game mechanics to make the microtransactions fit? How about the game being utterly unplayable after a while without either waiting unreasonable periods of time or shelling out cash.

I have nothing against microtransactions or F2P done properly (read:without the ethics that would make the British East India company balk). And it can and has been done properly (see: LoL, TF2, World of Tanks). We complain because we see this sort of bullshit as a blight on gaming and it should not be supported in any way.

The fact that they took a beloved IP, bent it over the table and gave it a good rooting just adds to the outrage.

And I have nothing against a premium experience. Heck I pay for a premium experience in games I like.

This isn't a premium experience though.

This is shelling out to PLAY THE GAME LIKE IT SHOULD BE FREAKING PLAYED.

That is not premium. That is bullshit.

Dude, the post was a joke.

You almost had me :)

I play quite a few games on my phone and tablet now and most of their timers and shit drive me crazy, but it doesn't surprise me that EA tries to up the ante on the bullshit and go balls to the wall with their whale hunting.

The sad thing is that it might just work out for them regardless of what the gaming community and sites say. There's no telling what the mobile market will do and for every ridiculous F2P scheme, there's a herd of whales waiting to waste their money.

The real gamers suffer.

I have spent time creating my town, and unlocking free stuff to continue building and growing my town. I don't spend much time on it unless there is an event going on. It only takes 5 minutes to check in once or twice a day and collect the money, which will come in handy when they add more free content in future updates.

'It only takes 5 minutes’... You make this sound like a fucking job, not something you do for fun.

Haven't you forgot #E1Y14 under the post ? :)

The only way EA stock prices can damage industry is if shares increase.

As long as they are tanking it sends proper signals to other companies that shit like that will not be accepted.

EA needs to rebrand their mobile unit. What they are doing is no different than what other lower-tier F2P companies are doing, but they get more flak for it because of who they are and the type of popular licenses they get to work with.

If all these games were under a different banner, I don't think you'd see quite the same uproar that they get.

Wow I just realized this game was made by Mythic, the company who made Dark Age of Camelot. Must suck to go from making huge MMOs to mobile beggarware.

Well, MMO's are ostensibly about the same. You put the user on an endless treadmill, throw some distractions at him and hope he keeps paying to stay on it.

Dungeon Keeper basically cements my opinion that F2P is the black plague of gaming. For every time it's done alright, there's 100 times it isn't. I gave this game a fair chance, and it completely blew it. $15.99 for FFVI is a better deal.

So I had to know and your guess is almost right, only you don't get any gems.
After playing for a while, you get an ingame popup, that indicates that 5 stars helps them and the game:
kNKJFqk.png

If you tap on 1-4 Stars, you get another popup, that let's you e-mail them:

Taping on 5 Stars sends you to the play store.
I have seen much worse than that
many mobile f2p games bait you with ingame currency if you rate the game with 5 stars
i dont see whats bad about the possibility to write a mail to the developers with improvements if you are not happy with the game

Their reaction was that they designed this to be what players wanted/asked for?

Really ... ?
Mobile developers have been using the "but mobile players love it" argument a lot lately. I guess if it helps them sleep at night... no... no it's still not okay...

Well i tweeted peter moore a article by kotaku that was referred to jim sterling his review and said to him i hope your proud of destroying my memories of a fantastic game.

As an aside: I've never really hit a situation where the existence of one game hurts my existing perception of another. This DK looks rubbish as hell, but my memory of the originals is unsullied, and I'm still perfectly content to go back to them.

I'm curious if this is just being melodramatic, or you do actually feel that the earlier game is tainted now, and if so why?

There's going to be an interesting conversation in a big dev studio coming up where bonuses are tied to metascores but the publisher demands microtransactions. Those microtransactions will probably prevent the dev team hitting the metascore... See the issue? I'd make it a function of the dev contract that bonuses aren't tied to metascore if IAP and microtrans are mandated by the publisher, but it's not that easy.

Why, as a publisher, would you offer devs that? Dev survival is dependent on contracts, which means they don't have much capability to pick-and-choose what they get.
