Eurogamer: SNES Mini currently in development

I would absolutely buy one of these day one, but standard nintendo availability concerns are bound to prevent me from actually getting a hold of one.

I mean sure I'll preorder it...

But I'm gonna bury that preorder email somewhere and forget about it to avoid thinking about the almost inevitable stock issues.

The real dream would be if we get some special chip support.

I bought a NES Classic off eBay for £100 immediately after seeing it was discontinued I'm sorry I'm part of the problem now

Was lucky to get an NES Mini when it was available on amazon.de for literally a couple of minutes.

Hope Nintendo doesn't fail to produce enough units this time... Looking forward to playing all-time favs like Chrono Trigger, Zelda, Mario World, Super Contra, F-Zero, and what feels like three dozens of other astonishing titles.

So what can we expect? Same hardware as the NES Classic Mini but with a SNES emulator and interface? Same number of games? Higher price?

if i can't secure this one, it will actually bother me since there's games i'd want to see in it.

if the pattern holds, then next year should bring a N64 mini and then i'll lose my shit since that's where it gets really interesting for me.

Wait are they gonna make it look like the OG NA SNES? cause that shit was oogly

My personal dream its still a Playstation Mini. Call me whatever, but i find this idea with Playstation games far more appelialing.

No way I'm doing this alone.

For the 1st time I will use Amazon's wishlist tool and get my family to look for one for me. It will be amusing to hear what hoops everyone goes through trying to be the one who gets it.

Will preorder as soon as it gets announced.

Have my serious doubts about the veracity of this, though.

Now this makes no sense to me.

If Nintendo wanted to continue mini line, pulling nes mini makes less sense... unless they pulled it because it was hacked and snes mini will work differently.

Just thought of something, for all we know part of Nintendo discontinuing the NES Classic could have been due to their lincense agreements for all the games to be a limited run deal. Considering how many great games you were getting at a discounted price compared to where you can get those games elsewhere, it's possible some companies weren't making much on every console sale, or any if they just got a flat sort of rate for the games they included, and therefore only would agree to a limited run contract for the software.

It's just speculation since I have no clue as to how their agreements could have been set up, but if they didn't expect it to be such a success, it's just another potential reason for them to discontinue it when they did.

It seems to me that the promotion of old titles and the hype around these systems combined with the low supply would increase interest in emulation and piracy.

I can't be bothered to search out ROMs, but have certainly considered it given my new interest in old Nintendo titles and no goddamned supply of the microconsole.

No doubt in my mind that they'll screw up the SNES mini.

If we are lucky maybe they will do a combo NES/SNES mini and that's why the NES mini was discontinued. I seriously doubt that's why, but I can hope I guess.

Nintendo better produce enough of these. SNES was way more memorable to me as a kid.
The NES was one of the more memorable systems to me (I am an old fart who has been gaming since the early 80s) and it is really just one of those events that you had to be there for, but even then I am also more interested in this because the SNES is just timeless whereas with the NES a lot of those games aged badly.

Too many good games on this one though to make anyone happy if they limit it to 30.

Maybe they'll do pre-orders this time.

So you want scalpers to have an even greater advantage?

Yes pre orders could be managed in a way to ensure this is avoided but let's be real. Almost no company bothers to do it and those that do fail because they can't control how retailers handle it.

SNES mini = raspberry pi type internals with downloadable (reasonably priced) ROMs from the Nintendo store, no BS preloaded games (except for maybe a few like SMW). Which is what they should've done to begin with with the NES mini but they didn't think it through.

I'm doubtful Nintendo is going to develop and maintain an online marketplace infrastructure for a $60 retro emulator box. TBH I would be surprised if this is rumour is true given the Switch is now out and presumably it's own VC should be starting to see releases by the holiday, coinciding with the launch of a paid online service. Where is this product to fit in the marketplace? Is it a competitor to the Switch for nostalgia driven or lapsed Nintendo fans? Would this diminish the value of paid online, which is offering retro titles as an incentive to subscribe?

If true, I expect the exact same hardware in a new shell and an SNES skinned frontend.

Last week, Nintendo explained that it never intended NES mini to be a permanent product.

NOBODY THOUGHT IT WAS. We just wanted to be able to purchase it and maybe have you respond to unexpected demand. Maybe when you launch a cult product to a dedicated fanbase you should produce enough so most retailers have I dunno, more than 3 units?

I'm going to go ahead and predict that this situation is actually going to get worse with the SNES mini, not better.

If it can run Super FX games, I will donate my blood to get one.

Then you might wanna hold off heading to your nearest blood donor center. Because according to some posts in here, Nintendo can no longer sell Super-Fx games on VC like Star Fox, Yoshi's Island and I bet Fzero as well. So, chances of them coming to SNES mini are almost nonexistent.
