Eurogamer: SNES Mini currently in development

So is the NES mini actually out of production now?
Yep. Nintendo hates money or loves scalpers take your pick.

I'm sure they have solid business reasoning for killing it, but hell if I know what they are. If I was an investor I'd be confused as hell why they'd stop production on a guaranteed money maker.

If SNES classic has Chrono Trigger I will have it. Yoshi's Island and Star Fox would be nice to have too.

I see you missed the thread on that. Yes, officially it is.

Well damn. I kind of stopped caring once I found out that Punch Out wasn't the Tyson version but I know my dad was still interested in one.

They only have one guy making them, so they can't have him multitask.

heheheheh

Their ability to fuck up the simplest things is actually impressive.

So any backlash towards Reggie for straight up lying about how they were going to bring more into stock?

Ah, then my bad, but since then SE hasn'g bothered re-releasing them out West again, other than mobile??

Nope. Can still buy FFII, FFIII, Mana, ActRaiser, Chrono Trigger, and Mystic Quest on Wii VC-- but they were never brought to WiiU or 3DS. Really not seeing why SNES Mini will be any different, unless Nintendo opens its wallet or makes S-E some kind of crazy deal.

Nintendo's plans for SNES mini are also a major reason why last year's NES mini did not see a reprieve from discontinuation, Eurogamer understands, despite the latter's continued popularity and sell-out status.

That makes no sense whatsoever. People won't buy the NES mini if the SNES mini comes out? Sheesh

I'll preorder 20 and resell it for 3 times the price.

So, will it have new specs or just a new casing + controller port? Seeing as the nes mini kinda runs all the snes games you d want..

so where's all the people that said they discontinued the nes classic so it wouldnt eat into switch sales and not because they were incompetent

Okay, just for the hell of it, here's my dream list of 30 games for the North American version:

Super Mario World
Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario World 2
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG
Super Punch-Out!!
Star Fox
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Sim City
Illusion of Gaia
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2
Super Castlevania IV
Earthbound
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
ActRaiser
Final Fight
Street Fighter II: Turbo
Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
Mortal Kombat II
Mega Man X
Mega Man X 2
Mega Man X 3
The Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse
Contra III: The Alien Wars
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
TMNT IV: Turtles in Time

My theory is that they're looking at Disney and even (their now partner) Universal's successes taking high value "nostalgia" IPs that the public has perceived "lost their way" and effectively rebooting them by blending in explicit rehashes of the original while also paving the way for new franchises (see, e.g., Star Wars, Jurassic World).

Putting together those sort of ideas with Nintendo's historical knowledge of limited supply driving demand, I think they're probably dropping these sorts of things in limited amounts to get older fans to go "hey, yeah, this stuff was great!" with the hopes that if they can't get it, or they want "more", they bridge over to the Switch.

Love this list. Co-signed, but they'll never put two SF II's in there.

That theory is definitely plausible and has been thrown around here before

It also makes the most sense from a business standpoint

On the VC they do, sure. But these plug and play boxes are NOT the VC. But as we saw with the NES Mini, VC prices don't apply with these.

What's different now is that Nintendo knows that it has a goldmine of demand for these. It's not a "let's try it and see if we can make some money" scenario anymore. Demand and interest can (though admittedly not always) boost pricing.

Here's my prediction for games: there'll be 20. I bet this goes for the same price as the NES Classic, but Nintendo wants to pretend there's still a massive value difference between NES ROM dumps and SNES ROM dumps so, yeah, 20 games.

  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past
  • Super Metroid
  • F-Zero
  • Pilotwings
  • Earthbound
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • Donkey Kong Country 2
  • Mega Man X
  • Super Street Fighter II Turbo
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Final Fantasy IV
  • ActRaiser
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • SimCity
  • Harvest Moon
  • The Lost Vikings

Probably swap out Lost Vikings and SimCity for Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem for the Super Famicom Mini.

While I still think it's idiotic for Nintendo to cancel the NES Classic, the SNES is much superior with one of the best game lineups of all time. Hopefully Nintendo is smart enough to know how popular the NES Classic was and make significantly more stock and allow preorders.

If the SNES classic has 30 games like NES classic, Nintendo might sell it for $79.99 and hopefully not $100+.

I'd wager DKC 3 too

I'd replace two of these with Mega Man X2 and X3.

Sub SMW for All-Stars w/ SMW and the list is complete.

Yeah, no. That's not how Nintendo looks at their premium products. Also, Nintendo sees there is a high demand for this. The NES Mini showed it and more people will want the SNES Mini. They can charge higher on that alone because of the demand. If it costs $60 that tells me there is less than 30 games in it.

PLEASE! Lufia II isn't getting any love around here.

Yeah, although I will say that Japanese business decisions never necessarily make sense to me. If they were under US corporate governance, I'm sure that Board of Directors would have been turned over several times now for not exploiting the value of their IPs more.

To be discontinue two months after release lol

No mater how you want to buy one you will never find it.

C'mon Nintendo... you have a new chance here... do it right.

I never got a chance to buy one of the NES Minis. This time, I'm going to buy every single SNES mini I can get my hands on to scalp all of them because I know Nintendo is just gonna release a few in extremely limited quantities then discontinue it

Magical Quest would be cool, but licensing is an issue there, same with TMNT. I know it's a dream list, but I would love those games too haha.

What about all the "competing with Switch VC" etc..?

Also scalpers are so happy right now.

Wasn't really moved by the stock games on nes classic to care that it's gone. (only a couple games)

Same will apply to this one. If I see more games I'll like I'll try and get a pre order in.
