Eurogamer: Switch VC plans include upgrade progam, VC engineered by NERD

In the article discussing GCN VC, a couple things stood out that seemed worthy of separate discussion.

(The article mentions planned Luigi's Mansion, Sunshine and Melee support with Animal Crossing currently being tested. The thread pertaining to GCN VC can be found here.)

And while the number of platforms to be offered on Switch's Virtual Console has yet to be nailed down, we've heard that there should be an upgrade programme similar to that available on Wii U, where earlier purchases of Virtual Console NES games can be 'upgraded' for a small fee rather than being bought again at full price.

We've also heard that Nintendo Switch's Virtual Console is being engineered by (Nintendo European Research and Development) NERD, the studio behind the recent NES Mini micro-console which sold out in many stores ahead of Christmas.

First, wanted to mention NERD's NES VC blows away Wii U NES VC. So this is a great sign.

Second, what with many previous threads and posts speculating about such an upgrade program existing, very glad to see it planned for Switch.

What kind of upgrade fee are you willing to pay?

And, what with platforms not finalized, which console and handled platforms if any do you expect to be absent? (It's safe to assume Wii U digital downloads will not be a thing given the leaked/semi-revealed Wii U enhanced ports/semi-sequels.)

Create a save state if old.

Edit: LewieP kindly created a list of NERD's accomplishments:

For those wondering about NERD, they've made some great stuff so far:
  • Mobiclip video codec as used on GBA/DS/3DS/Wii/Wii U.
  • The Wii U web browser media player.
  • DS Emulator for Wii U (which supports 2x native resolution rendering).
  • Stable stereoscopic 3D on the New 3DS.
  • Wii VC games on Wii U.
  • She Wants to Move.

Wtf is that seriously oO

A dollar per upgrade, no more.

I don't have any VC game so it doesn't really affect me but yeah, it seems like the proper fee

I skipped buying VC games for a good reason on Wii U (appart from the 30 cents games at launch).
NERD is a good news and should prevent another N64 VC on Wii U monstruosity.

Cool : NERD are experts so the Virtual Console likely won't suck this time.

Not cool : Will I seriously have to pay one buck per game AGAIN ? That's like 15 bucks that could have bought me a Gamecube game.

They're a little dark but I don't know that they're as bad as people say, and apart from that they're not bad... you can always adjust TV brightness, the GBA games for example are much darker in screencaps online than on my TV's default brightness and look very good.

As long as there's new features to justify the upgrade fee I'm happy with that.

I guess portability alone will do that. :P

Wait, NERD was the company previously known as Mobiclip? Well, well :O

This upgrade stuff is ridiculous. They have every right to charge again or charge for upgrades, they don't *owe* me anything. But the practice they've used for VC has seriously impacted my desire to buy games on the service, and it doesn't look like that's changing.

What's the point of a unified account? Virtual Console should be a service like many PSN games, and if I own the game, I can play it on all Nintendo platforms it's available on. They don't *have* to do it that way, they don't *owe* it to me to do it that way, but it sure would be an incentive to get me to go up from buying 1-2 VC games a year to like 20.

I'll add this to the OP, thank you. They also did the NES mini VC which is superb.

An upgrade price of a dollar or two would probably mean that I re-purchase my entire VC library as soon as the games are available. Anything more and I might have to start picking and choosing titles, just because I'd want money on hand to buy new titles as well. If the upgrade list can include 3DS titles, that would be incredible!

I'll be really happy to see Nintendo officially announce this. I'd be even happier to see them announce a similar program for the ports of Mario Kart 8 and Smash!

Who says they're not doing that for Switch? This upgrade fee is for games you bought on Wii U.

They really need to stop with this upgrade fee bullshit. How about cutting down prices instead? 5€ for a NES game in 2017 isn't the same as 5€ for a NES game in 2006, when the VC was also a novelty.

At least NERD is handling the VC, so the quality of the service should be very high judging from NES Mini.

I bought so many games on my Wii, then my Wii died, and I didn't bother even looking to see if I could redeem them on my Wii U because of the cost.

I'm done with the VC, Nintendo have fucked it up. I've bought all the games half a dozen times, now it's going to emulators for life.

No more than a dollar for NES or 2-3 for later console releases.

How many PS3 games can you play on PS4? Serious question.

Okay. Will continue not purchasing VC titles until they carry over for free.

I don't see that ever happening, makes no sense for nintendo.

What they SHOULD do is make the upgrade fee really cheap. Like $0.50 per game or something, just enough to cover the cost of the hosting, redownload and a small part of the added R&D cost for the new emulator. It should be at cost.

If they don't charge it, soon enough they will be losing money on VC.

I bought 1 VC game on WiiU because of this and I didnt even transfer my wii stuff. Thy would get way more money out of me if it all transfered. I have no issue with it being how it is, I just buy less as a result.

That's cool, Nintendo. I'll continue not buying VC games until they're linked to my account and cross-buy across all of your systems.

So they're wizards.

I didn't pay to upgrade most of my Wii VC games to Wii U VC mode. I wonder if I'll need to do a double upgrade process and that will still be cheaper?
