Ya, cause like it's not like all the framework is already in place and continued assertion of power from emerging nations will increasingly reduce the influence and relevance of European countries.

If eventually the UK decides to throw in with the EU and form a super-state, would that make the falklands part of said super-state?
 
The UK were against joining Germany during WW2 and I'm sure they'll be against it now :P

Hard to imagine a EU superstate without Germany somehow holding a good amount if not most of the power.

Power has always rested principally with the Big Three - Britain, Germany and France.

Also, the UK itself proposed an Imperial union with France during that same war.

Yes, culturally all of the nordic countries are similar (but really, our culture is very similar to that of the US as well). However, while the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian languages are very closely related, Finnish is completely different (not even part of the same language family). Also, Finns are not ethnically as closely related to ethnic Scandinavians as we are to each other.

To be honest, the term is a mess anyway. If you look at it in a cultural or political context you can certainly make an argument for including Finland. Things get even worse if you look at it from a geographical context though, as Denmark hasn't owned any parts of the Scandinavian peninsula for hundreds of years. On the other hand, part of northern Finland is part of the peninsula, so you could technically make an argument for Norway, Sweden, Finland and excluding Denmark.

If my country learned anything from its history it's that in Europe you cannot really trust anyone but yourself. So as long as this euro-schizophrenia persists ("So yeah, today we're an Union, tomorrow we're back to being separate countries because it fits our particular interests better, but next day we'll be Union again, I promise!") I don't see any possibility for real European Federation. In fact, Europe should make up its mind already, I'm sure most of us have some other possible alliances in mind and looking at Asia and South America time IS a factor.

Sure, but I'm simply stating facts here. And the fact is that Scandinavia = Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Whether that makes geographical sense or not, it's the truth.

The union doesn't them anyways. It's anglo-economics that got us into this current mess after all. (I KID.) But to be serious for a second, there are different models proposed for a federation. One proposed model is a sort of dynamic federation in which states could periodically alter their membership. Not exactly sure how that would work, but i've read something along those lines.

And look how much trouble that has caused in forming an effective response to the financial crises. The barriers to this dream are language and cultural differences, now I will never say never but a whole lot more integration is required.
 
Europe becoming one nation? Nah, it's been tried before, it didn't work out. :p

I suppose the EU becoming a federation of largely autonomous states like the USA is inevitable in the long term, though. I wouldn't really mind, either.

We Brits will do whatever we want either way.

I thought geographical stuff was always the no. 1 reason to why Finland is excluded from Scandinavia.

From cultural point of view Finland was part of Sweden for 600 years and Swedish is still our second official language aka everyone has to study it. Politically we share the same social democratic system as every other Nordic country.

Why is it so disturbing that in common English Finland is usually included in Scandinavia? I mean, when that happens there's always a mob shouting "Oh god get Finland out of there asap!"

Well yeah but certainly nothing like the rift that we had during the religion wars or when some king decided to create his own religion because his wife was less good looking than some other fox he was chasing.
 
If the Queen becomes the symbolic head of this super state, the euro replaced with the £, the flag replaced by the union flag (perhaps with some faint stars watermark), then we will reluctantly put our support behind this. We are reasonable after all.

wanna make a union, I'm well up for it

while you've got club med I don't wanna be a part of it. Too much laziness and maintenance to be worth it.
