Even if God appeared and proved everything, would you worship him?

I would like to say no as any being who would torment someone for all eternity simply for not worshiping it is clearly evil and undeserving of worship, but I would probably fall in line. I doubt my moral fortitude is that strong.

If he rocked up and was all like oy hell is real take a look, then showed us hell and it was really bad then fuck yes I'd worship the sweat off of him.

I would do whatever he asked me, since he's supposed to be omnipotent. You know, something to consider before acting badasses against Doctor Manhattan

I tell bullies to fuck off. God would be no exception.
I'm stubborn SOB. I got along great with a relative who had a lot of money, but when he started acting like a real dick I called him on it and got disinherited. My reaction was basically "Good. Less reminders of you, then.". (Turns out he was acting weird because he had a brain tumor and died almost immediately after that.) I almost didn't graduate from high school because I refused to pay a fine for a book I never checked out. The only reason I graduated is that they caved.

Already do. No "proof" needed.

I would have a lot of questions. A lot. Including why he demands such from me after having designed me to have a deterministic will and skeptical mind. You say he'll answer, but how many questions? Obviously signs and wonders wouldn't in themselves prove he is God rather than just some sort of very powerful being. Something that would be in his power to do is divinely reveal the truth of it to my mind directly so I would be convinced, so I would ask why he doesn't just do that, and perhaps put the desire to worship him there as well.

There are a lot of issues with this premise so I can't give a straight answer to it. I suppose if such a demanding and powerful being were likewise impatient, I'd have to comply on reasonable probability that he could inflict lasting torture upon me whether or not he was actually God or worthy of it. But then is that really worship? I'd ask him about that, too.

They're both the same guy though. I mean...what if he has another mood swing in the future and goes back to being a wrathful fucker?
Like at the end of Revelation? It's promised there. Start at chapter 19.

Yeah I would. So long as he's a just god. Don't ask me to do any cruel shit to people or I'm gonna have to call the whole thing off!

I feel as if a lot of people are too proud to accept this. I do not mean that as an insult. More that they are very confident, and that they would rather live free and by their own rules, than to follow Gods.

Wait, what? You think the reason people don't believe in God is because they are too proud to accept the laws of such a being? Do you also think the reason why people break "man made" law is because they are too proud to follow them?

I'd do it but I'd hate him for it, like I would any other tyrant. If hating him sends me to hell, well...not sure if I'd be able to stop myself.

Take out hell and maybe I'm better. If he's just like "guys, you should worship me because I created you, and I really am as loving and forgiving as everyone says" I'd probably happily convert. As long as its not coerced.

If he proves that hell exists and it's a terrible place then I guess I'd have to worship him. But then I'm only doing it out of fear. I don't want to spent forever in a lake of sulfur in agony.

What he really wants is for us to love him because we choose to do so by our own free will not out of fear. Or so I'm told.

Wouldn't he know that I'm only worshipping him because of fear, and not due to a genuine desire to do it?

Wouldn't he know that I didn't believe in him until that point, something that may possibly enrage him?

Wouldn't he be a total asshole if he tried to force me to worship me, therefore making hell a better choice if only because I'd be far from him and his oppressive ways?

If the Christian view of life and death turns out to be true it would be downright foolish to oppose God based on principal. He does not mess around.

This is a classic question to ask the non-believer of a religion. Personally, I'd generally have to go with this response, which isn't my own creation but I agree with:

1. If "god" is literally God and omniscient, then omniscience by definition would require that God understand all things. God would already know the reasons why I hadn't ever put stock in any religion and it would be hypocritical of God to hold it against me.

2. If "god" is in fact the capricious, suspiciously human being described in various religions, then it makes no difference. This all powerful being that appears to run the universe essentially tortures for fun, is so small it has vanity, and creates beings to be its plaything.

In short, God would already be cool with me doing my own thing, or this universe would turn out to be the creation of a tyrannical entity and we are all of us already well and truly fucked - including those who thought they were kissing up to God all along.

Before getting on my knees and start worshiping him, I'd honestly try to get on my knees for a different reason to make myself his cabana boy.

Old Testament God? Yes, because I'm terrified of his cruelty and pettiness.

New Testament God? Yes, because he's good.

If it was Maester Seymour, I'd tell him to fuck off, because fuck Maester Seymour.

If He's as almighty and infallible as He proclaims, then of course I would. If He's real, then he's like a big human compared to my ant size, so how conceited would I be to think I knew better than Him?

I'm sure an omnipotent being would desire the adoration his insignificant creations.
I'm also sure that an omnipotent being would be so petty as to condemn each insignificant creation of his that did not worship him to an eternity of suffering.

What does God need with a worship?

Heh, first thing I thought of. I'd certainly be as skeptical, despite showing me miracles.

In the end, I'd probably be down with it if it were just a matter of accepting him being real and going to church on Sundays and praying. Now, taking OP's scenario of Him enforcing Old Testament "rules" including shunning homosexuality and incurring violence against gay people, I'd say "screw you, I'd rather go to hell."

But I really REALLY don't want to think of that being the case.

I wouldn't worship god, I would just believe in god. I might worship god if he got rid of cancer or something along those lines.

I suppose if a logical contradiction and philosophical paradox could prove its existence...

Then, yes, I guess I would worship him. I don't see why I wouldn't. Causeless rebellion?

Edit: Course, if he proved his existence and wanted worship, my free-will to choose is pretty questionable.

The premise itself doesn't make sense unless you think the only possibilities for supernatural deities are 2 evil beings, so the question can't really be answered, it's like choosing death by drowning or hanging.

A god that wants worshipers, or puts a gun to their head to submit to him for his own pleasure is obviously immoral, so I would question his definition of hell as being a place of permanent torture. Being a slave to a higher authority for all eternity is torturous as well. If he's supposed to be the 'good' guy, but he isn't, then I would say 'maybe Satan is actually the good guy and this guy is lying?' and try to find out.

If he was able to prove hell really was a place where you were burned to death over and over, then I would have to compare that with whatever heaven was. Heaven doesn't exist so I don't know what it would be except the idea that you would be a slave to someone forever, and we don't know what all of that entails.

It's an unanswerable question without more details, we can't just assume that heaven is ruled by a benevolent dictator and whenever you're not praying at his feet you can go on roller coasters and shit, which is better than being tortured over and over all day. That's all in our heads.

Not until he/she started making up for all the disease, wars, murderers... Etc.

Actually probably not even then. Why should I? I worship nothing.

I'd probably tell him/her to go fuck himself/herself.

Of course.

Worship or go to hell? Dude. Easiest decision ever.

This.

Anyone saying otherwise is crazy. Screw principles. Hell if Satan appeared and said he defeated God and we must now all must join a Satanic cult I'd do it.

Except you don't know what 'worship' means. And if god said worship means you have to be ass raped all day? How do we even know what hell is?

It's a dumb question, there is no easy decision. COOKIES OR LOLIPOPS!? Pick the right one or YOU DIE.

Visit hell/heaven to evaluate them.
I would request a detailed list of dos & don'ts required for hell/heaven.
Most important thing would be to know, if you really have to worship him or if it's enough to be a decent person. Also, if doing so while secretly hating this god would be fine.

Because that's a fucked up god with some serious ego-complex. Also, many people literally experience hell on earth, why has he allowing/doing this for thousands of years? Fuck him/she/it, he can go to hell :P

edit: oh yeah, and ask him if there are other powerful beings (like the devil) and how to contact them. No real reason why *whistles*...
