EW: The best sci-fi from the past 25 years

It reminds me of those millions of other movies set where humanity is imprisoned by machines. Except for the fact that the prison is a virtual world and humanity doesn't even know they are imprisoned. What it really reminds me of, is that movie that takes that concept and blends it with fight choreography from Asian cinema and also used a rotating slow-motion technique that has now become ubiquitous. What was the name of that movie... oh yeah it doesn't exist, except for the "derivative" matrix.
.
:lol Okay, man. There is no spoon.

They missed Star Trek: First Contact.

Ya where is First Contact on that list? It definetly deserves to be there IMO. They should have limited this list to movies I think instead of just putting all of a particular show as being the best sci fi.

That's ****ing horrid. Really it is. That list pretty much confirms my suspicion that no one older than 25 writes for EW.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was the only good Star Trek movie imho. It was pretty awesome. ;)

I think the list is fair, but everyone has their own favorite series that cloud their judgement. I wouldn't number it that way personally.

Stargate probably deserved a mention though.

Babylon 5 broke ground in a lot of ways, not just for Sci-Fi but TV in general. I'd have it in a top 25 list for all-time TV series; not including it in this one is a bit of a joke.

So, am I the only one who liked that movie "The Abyss?"

I thought it was interesting, especially since mankind has yet to go to the lowest depths of the sea. It's be pretty cool if there was some kind of intelligent life down there.

I'd forgotten about Gattaca. If the list were hard sci-fi, rather than mostly action movies cosplaying as science fiction, then the movie would have been a shoe-in.

Really I'm almost angry that Lost got on there. Its more psuedo science than anything, the enemy of real science.

I don't understand why Heroes is up there after not even finishing its first season yet.

Children of Men, while amazing from a cinematography perspective, doesn't really have that great of a storyline to compete with the rest of the list.

Terminator 2 deserves to be higher (and why not say Alien/Aliens like they did with Terminator?)

There are some movies such as 5th Element that I feel deserve to be on there too, but I haven't seen them in so long that I'm not sure how accurate my memory is.

The Matrix 1 was awesome, imagine if 2 and 3 were as good and as "realistic" (in the sense that the first one was almost believable and more subtle while the 2nd and 3rd were basically ridiculously comic-book-like and immature).

I add Dark City to this. And yes Terminator 2 and Aliens.

Oh god I hated that movie.

The premise was sort of OK, but the unbelievably cheesy "love story" just sucked my enjoyment right out of it.

22.) QUANTUM LEAP (1989-1993)
13.) THE TERMINATOR/ TERMINATOR 2 (1984 /1991)
12.) BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)
9.) ALIENS (1986) *back off hataz - this owns you*
8.) STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (1987-1994)
3.) BLADE RUNNER (1982)

I approve!

18.) HEROES (2006-Present)
17.) ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004)
14.) CHILDREN OF MEN (2006)
11.) LOST (2004-Present)

Solid productions but WAY too early have them on such a list. There is far better si-fi from the past 2 decades that outclass these.

21.) FUTURAMA (1999-2003)
1.) THE MATRIX (1999)

WTH :lol No, just no.

Oh, and where the heck is Star Wars? Empire at least deserves mention.

Terrible list. I disagree with just about everything on there. The bad things are too high and the good things are too low and there's tons missing. Ugh.

I picked up the Wrath of Khan a few weeks ago on DVD, after not seeing it for a few years, and was floored at how good it is. Smart, serious character-driven sci-fi. Great film.

Not cool. Galaxy Quest gets a guernsy and Farscape (& to a lesser extent Stargate) miss out all together? Rip-Off!

i came in wanting 'aliens' in the list. it's there, but not high enough

god, i ****ing love that movie.

Battlestar Galactica at #2? I think even the series' most ardent fans would have a tough time accepting that one.

And Dr. Who is WAAYYY too low.

And Alien Nation got dissed.

Also, Robotech, motherf***kers.

I don't get why people like blade runner so much.

Fantastic cinematography. Incredible atmosphere. An amazing soundtrack that sounds futuristic and dissonant even today, no mean feat given the technology they were working with. It created perhaps the most believable hyper-corporate/global economy future in film. And it's all tied around the core of an old-fashioned detective story and with several cultural images which suggest that certain elements of human culture are enduring. It is a truly iconic work of science fiction film making.

Doctor Who should be number two. It's only been around since the sixties along with Star Trek. Honestly Star Treks should be number one with Star Wars being third and BSG being fourth.

Sorry guys, but I would not put BSG that high when the new series only has three seasons under its belt. It could still crash and burn.

Also, WTF at the Matrix?

No Gattaca = lose.

I understand the Matrix. It was uber cool, groundbreaking action scenes that are still mimicked today (and yes, I don't care if it wasn't the first ever use - it popularised it enough to give it a name that stuck - bullet-time), had a real science-fiction core, and was well executed to boot.

Just because it's cool to hate it now doesn't mean it doesn't belong on such a list - maybe not at number one, but really, it's got everything. Any list like this should just be observed as what is on it, not the order.

But again, no Gattaca = lose.

I can't be the only one in the world that wants an Aliens T-Shirt of Hudson with captions of either of the following:

'We're on an express elevator to hell, goin' down!'

'Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen!'

'We're in some real pretty shit now man!'

'State of the badass art!'

****, there's too many to go through.

BSG has already crashed and burned. The latter half of the third season was turgid nonsense, will Appolo love Starbuck....will Starbuck love Appolo - who cares, bring back the Cylons!

If we are gonna start messing with anime, Lain and Oshii's GitS easily enter the top ten, although they don't seem to care about the definition of Sci-Fi at all.

Yup. The whole season-arc format that Sopranos, Lost, BSG etc rely on was pioneered by this series. It's also excellent not just for it's groundbreaking nature.

That and Dark City being missing are the only things worth griping about, IMHO.
