Excellent sequels to bad/terrible games?

107w743.jpg

Maybe Dune 1 wasn't a terrible game, but I definitively didn't like it.

Warcraft II

I could be wrong, and it may not be a bad/terrible game, but I don't remember the first Warcraft really being received that well.

Rushing Beat Shura > RB Ran > crap > RB

Amazingly, the first game is TERRIBLE, boring, slow and has no redeeming features. How they made two more games that were infinitely better...

Final Fight is about as far from "bad/terrible" as you can possibly get, being one of the greatest action games of all time and all.

FEAR 2 ( FEAR 1 was a bad game and boring )
Saint's Row 2 ( SR1 wasn't that good )
MGS Peace Walker ( MGS4 was shit )
Burnout Paradise ( Burnout: Revenge = meh )

What the fuck?

Red Steel 2 is the answer. Red Steel 1 threw a heap load of shitty controls, obtuse mechanics, and schlocky writing in your face. It wanted so hard to be a good game that it got weighed down by it's overambitions.

Red Steel 2 completely rewrote the script, and it's only fault is that it went the polar opposite direction and doesn't have enough things to engage the player. That said, the swordplay, presentation, and controls are all ace.

A sequel that shouldn't have been made, but I'm glad that it was.

Also, Ninety Nine Nights 2 will be much more extreeeeeeeeeeme and the fact that there will be over one million troops? Wow.

Going to put this on the table:

Twisted Metal 2

and slowly back away
I'll back you up on that. I played TM2 first and thought BRILLIANT! Then I played TM1 and couldn't figure how it'd ever gotten a sequel...

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans got solid reviews, won awards and was pretty profitable. I played it a lot, anyway.

Assassin's Creed 2 for me. I hated the first one, but I got hooked by the second.

Have Red Dead Redemption been mentionned too? The first one was a pretty shitty shooter, but the second is one of the best, if not the best, sandbox game ever.

Yah, it's tough for people going back to it these days because it is basically unplayable by modern standards, but at the time it was pretty awesome.

Imo, the first game is better than the second.

I see ZOE2 being mentioned but Zone of the Enders was a good game. Had a lot of fun with it in the early PS2 days.

Too Human 2

Believe!

I'll go with Assasins Creed 2. It fits the OP's request most perfectly. The first was terrible. The second, excellent.

Burnout2 was better than Burnout3. I said it.
You might be right. I have enjoyed all the Burnout games quite a bit, but the feeling of 2 was... sublime. I also liked the original for the sheer challenge of avoiding any and all collisions.

Edit: Burnout on DS was terrible. Laughable.

Reserved for Sonic Colors. Believe.

Seriously, there aren't really any TERRIBLE games mentioned in this thread. I want to see something along the lines of a Sonic 2006 quality game to a Super Mario Galaxy quality game.

Spider-man 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Spider-man1
(the movie ones)

few people will agree with me ... but ...

Age of Empires 2 >>> Age of empires 1
Double Dash >>>>> Mario kart 64
Wario Land Shake it >> that bizarre Wario for Cube

also in the "Muuuuuuuuuuuuch better but that don't mean that the other was crap"

Smash bros Meele > Smash 64
Soul Calibur > Soul Edge
Resident 4 > Resident 3
F-zero GX > F-zero 64
Mario Galaxy > Mario Sunshine
Endless Ocean 2 > Endless Ocean
Mario kart wii > Double Dash
Whatever Zelda came after 2 > Zelda 2

Which one of those was Brawl Brothers in NA? That was my favorite bmup on the SNES. Peace Keepers was okay. Both were infinitely better than Rival Turf and its RADICAL box art.

Rushing Beat == Rival Turf
Rushing Beat Ran == Brawl Brothers
Rushing Beat Shura == The Peace Keepers

Shura had some really dubious changes made to it like changing the character portraits, names, some of the dialog was apparently translated completely wrong and even some of the moves in the game were changed (Elfin/Echo's super going from a ton of phoenix on the screen to her just yelling really loud? wtf?). the overall presentation was changed, mostly for the worst, IMO. The only significant change made to Ran is making the sewers into a maze for reasons I cannot understand.

I came to post metal gear (nes) to metal gear solid. Not sure if it counts since there's such a long time lapse between the two.

Gex to Gex: Enter the Gecko also popped in my head.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, but Blood Omen was awesome in its own style... just, Legacy of Kain was even more awesome.

I know that few people will agree with me, but for me it´s GTA: San Andreas. It was such a good improvement in terms of how if fixed the broken things in Vice City (AI, spawning of NPC characters in random places, etc) and at the same time replaced the flat map of VC with one the most impressive game worlds I have seen.

I know that many people are really fond of VC, but for me the music and the motor cycles just weren´t enough when everything else was so bad. I actually think that VC is not good, not mediocre, but actually terrible.

Well, San Andreas is the best Sandbox game ever made, so this is not very fair for VC.

It was unplayable for me at the time, too. Orc campaign was just too hard.

Have you played that shit? It was dreadful, K2 is a great answer to the thread. First thing I thought of
Although i haven't played the second yet, i thoroughly enjoyed the first. It was a solid fps with a fun mp. It has flaws, but not so much that it even needs to be thought about being put in this group

I liked the style of the first game but the gameplay was pretty bad. Didn't help that to get the full enjoyment from the game you needed at least two GBAs and link cables. Ring of Fates improved greatly with the loot system and being on the DS it was easier to play with somebody else. Even if you didn't have anyone to play with it was fun playing single player.

Disappointed though with what followed. After My Life as a King I didn't enjoy any of the games sequels. I hope the 3DS gets a FFCC that improves upon what Ring of Fates introduced and not make the same mistakes with Echoes of Time.
