Excellent sequels to bad/terrible games?

Assassins Creed 2, Red Steel 2, Killzone 2, Zone of the Enders 2 and Street Fighter 2 are the only real answers in this thread. People that are posting crap like Mario, Starcraft, MGS are wrong and don't understand the OP at all...

Can't seriously think of any. Assassin's Creed 2 seems to be a popular answer but I haven't played it yet (although I did enjoy the first one, go figure). I usually don't bother with sequels to games I felt were bad/terrible (like Red Steel), and if I do it's because I didn't play the first one (like Street Fighter, assuming the first one is actually bad).

If I apply GAF hyperbole™ I can say ZoE 2 though. First game isn't bad but the second one is a massive improvement.

And Zone of Enders is a terrible game? :D

Just Cause 2 definitely comes to mind. I only played the demo for the first, but I had no desire to every purchase it since it seemed to be a mediocre and forgettable game. The sequel, however, is not only an amazing looking and fun game but it's also one of the, if not the best over the top sand box game of this gen. I've had a ridiculous amount of fun with it.
Just Cause 2 put Avalanche on my radar, from now on I'll be interested in whatever they put out (if they're able to put anything out again, sales were not good).

Seems like this thread is just improvements. I can't really see 80% of the games in here being "terrible/bad" except maybe Street Fighter (couldn't stand the first but loved 2).

I've been playing through these recently and it really is quite the step up. SML is about as derivative a Mario game you can get and it even has slightly messy gameplay (collision detection is wonky for starters), SML2 on the other hand is an utter masterpiece. So much content, so much variation, such fantastic use of the original GB's sound and graphics capabilities and the gameplay is tight as hell, its the GB's SMB3 as far as I'm concerned.

yeah i'm not getting the metal gear or starcraft references, those games were fantastic in their original incarnations. I'm actually having a difficult time with this one.

NES Double Dragon II soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better than the SNES original. DD 1 was a pretty shitty game in its own right.

Dirt 2. Don't get me wrong, it has it's share of problems. The day-glo aesthetic and over-enthusiastic "social" aspect ("Ken Block now thinks you're a legend." Really?) were a little irritating, and it needed more courses, but Dirt 1 handled like shit. The cars might as well have been on tarmac with all the aids turned on, it was way too grippy and, well, easy. Dirt 2 handles like a dream, great sense of speed, weight and momentum. Roll on Dirt 3!

p.s. Codies, how about full on 13 stage rallies with repair stops and persistent damage? I basically want Colin McRae Rally 2.0 2.0!:lol

p.p.s. Oh, and Bad Company 2. :D Frostbite Engine :D

forgot about this game.

according to wiki the game sold 920 copy worldwide.
i don't know if thats good or bad but i don't think the game was a big budget game like the exclusive games.

i really want another game from avalanche :(

Resident Evil 4 > everything before it.

Fucking hated the control scheme of the originals and can't force myself to play that shit. Worst controls I've ever had to use.

protip: resident evil 4 controls are the same only difference is the camera is behind the player.

protip: three fixed vertical angles of aim is not the same as free vertical aim.

From what I remember JC 1 was an original Xbox game that got "upgraded" for the 360 so I can't imagine the budget was all that much. JC 2 on the other hand was done from the ground up on the 360 hardware and they knocked it out of the park with that game.

I too want to see what else they have up their sleeve!

Yeah, same here. I didn't know the sales numbers, but it never managed to crack the top 20 which in unfortunate considering how good the game is. Hopefully they can stay in business and keep pumping out kickass games.

I'm going to chime in with Dragon Quest 1 and Final Fantasy 1. I mean both were pretty unremarkable jrpg's and really had nothing going for them. (Hell, FF1 came out within days of Phantasy Star 1 in Japan which was a far superior game.) Of course the sequels improved greatly but the first game in each of those sequels were quite frankly awful.

Are you saying DKC 1 was crap?
Are you saying DKC 2 was crap and DKC 3 was better?

... you are wrong either way.
I am saying DKC 2 was vastly superior to DKC1

DKC 1 is not bad but its definately not in the top tier of snes platformers

DKC 2 is probably the best snes platformer.

I don't know about shitty first game, but huge leap forward:
Silent Hill 2
I felt the first game was mediocre - maybe not terrible, but I couldn't go back to it after playing the second. Huge leap forward.
DOA2
Tekken 5
Soul Calibur
Xenosaga 2
That's impossible.

itt: posters don't understand what a bad game is

like NMH1: not a bad game but 2 was an improvement IN SOME WAYS but not in others

Devil Summoner (assuming this is the Raidou game for PS2) was not bad but 2 was certainly a major improvement

as for an example: I suppose you could say Castlevania 2 to 3, but the second game was only really bad in retrospect, at the time it was just different.

10 posts to say Assassin's Creed II?

For shame Gaf, this thread was made for that game!

Assassin's Creed II was fucking shitty. The first one was far far far better than the snoozefest that was AC2.

Infact, the first game is the reason why I played the sequel. So glad I didn't pay for it and borrowed it from my friend. Still have my copy of the first game, though.
