'Explaining' your music taste to others

I don't bother (even on GAF) because people are apparently incapable of separating opinion and fact. Genre wankery and "my opinion = fact" bullshit has killed any desire I have to discuss music, movies, etc.
Once you're past a certain age it doesn't matter what other people think.

Get on my level

"every song from a particular artist played at once". Joking aside, someone has done it, except for one album - Capitain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica".

I... actually kinda enjoyed it.

:< Nope. I just don't like rap music. And I know the joke is "he's got something to say" but I honestly find what he writes about to be more appealing and interesting than most rappers. So nope, it isn't a joke. And of course, it is just my opinion, I'm not being one of those "opinion=fact" assholes or anything. I honestly don't get the appeal of most hip hop music, it just isn't for me. More power to people who dig it though (even if I can't really stand that kind of music).
I think he's referring to you stereotyping rap. Are you young? Using macklemore prolly means you haven't heard much. Admittedly, I haven't kept up with much recent mainstream rap. But in the 90s/00s, there were plenty who had "something to say", tupac, nas, de la soul, common, talib kweli, etc. Even rappers like dmx and busta on a good day had stuff to say.

The opposite of what I usually see in others' playlists, i.e.

1) Hardly any female singers/songwriters

2) Aggressive shit x1000

3) Shit with terrible, lopsided production that serves no purpose

So my playlists have the opposite of all these in abundance.

That wasn't actually all that bad. Thnx for the link.

Macklemore isn't hiphop in any traditional sense, but it is music that is at the very least derivative of that genre, their Venn diagrams intersect and such. And sorry about the "nigga" ignorance thing but meh, I prefer song lyrics the appeal to my taste, and most hip hop doesn't really mesh with the song writing I prefer. So yeah, I was pretty straight up in saying I'm not a hip hop or rap guy. It just isn't my thing. I can still appreciate some of it though, like Eminem or Childish Gambino (if that is hip hop, Christ, I dunno).
That's cool; people like what they like. Nothing to be sorry about as long as the reasons aren't completely ridiculous.

There is the irritating thing of late where people'll say Mack's the first hiphop artist "with something to actually say" or shit like that, which is just 100% off base. I don't even listen to most hiphop myself, but I'd like to think the ones I do listen to have stuff worth talking about. Guys like Atmosphere/Slug, Psyche Origami, EL-P, Little Brother, Funky DL, Common, Leaders of the New School etc. That's much more my kind of hiphop.

I really should have been more specific. My friends don't listen to older rap, it is mostly newer stuff. I have heard old rap before and I've dug some of it but I don't know it very well. When talking about my dislike of rap, I was referring mostly to what they listened to, since this topic was about the poster's music versus his/her friends' preferred sound. So yeah, I should have been less vague and more specific, but it is kinda hard to articulate my dislike for their music when I have so little to compare to (which is like some tupac, common, and biggie that I've heard before). So yeah, I overgeneralized a tad which lead to the retaliation from a couple posters. As for my age, I'm nineteen.

I find describing my musical taste to most people an exercise in futility. I'm open to a lot of things in a variety of genres, and most of my favorite artists aren't household names (level 4 reporting in) so to answer with any kind of sincerity is just a waste of time.

It's like when people ask "how are you" and they don't really care. When someone asks you what music you listen to what they really want to know is "do you listen to the same music I do" and in my personal experience the answer is usually, no.

Your friends are fucking ignorant if they make fun of you for listening to Prince. Just take solace in that. I'm not a huge Prince guy but that's where I stand on that. Prince is Prince.

If that's where they lie on that issuse I guarantee they have a lot of terrible shit they listen to.
That happens to case with most people, it's lame/immature/geeky/gay to be interested in some things but totally okay to be doing dumb shit like stalking people on Facebook the whole day.

Seriously most people will assume I'm just another guy but people have to almost hold in their shock when I tell them what I'm into.

I've never liked anything Prince has ever done, but, clearly, the man is a genius. If your friends are mocking you because you don't subscribe to the notion that music has an expiration date, then they're either immature in their musical tastes or just aren't that interested in music to begin with. A great song is a great song; regardless of whether it's by Britney Spears or Sigur Ros. As you get older, you learn to accept music on face value rather than a statement of cool. I tend to listen to a small group of artists relative to , but obsessively, as there's no greater joy in stumbling upon an artist and digging into their back catalogue, finding gems hidden away on compilations and b-sides. It's half the fun and it's why older artists are more interesting to me with their extensive library of musical achievements. Growing up I used to think the Electric Light Orchestra, a band which my dad listened to religiously, were bloody awful and tragically unhip. Now, of course, I see them for what they are; sweet, melodic wizards who craft the most genius pop songs. It was great to discover their music 30 or so years after the fact.

As you can see from my last.fm list, I tend to gravitate towards pop and alternative with a heavy bias towards electronic music.

i just usually say rock, blues and metal.

I could easily be more specific (prog rock, power metal, classic rock, blues rock) but unless I'm having an in-depth music conversation it isn't worth it.

I never feel ashamed or have a need to explain my taste in music in others.

But most of the music I'm truly passionate about is the sort that most people would instantly categorise as 'weird'. I don't mind but it's a little lonely when I literally haven't met a single person in my life who enjoys stuff like Protest the Hero, Mars Volta or Animals as Leaders =(

I usually say "experimental rock" or something. It's vague enough to cover a good chunk of what I listen to, without going into more specific subgenres that people may not have heard of. Alternatively I just send them my handy dandy top 50 album chart.

Try being purely a Trance/EDM only listener. I just silently walk away from any music talk my co-workers or friends have because I have no clue about any of the iconic 70-90s rock bands.

Right with you. I've had to explain myself a few times before.

Also, I tend to not pay attention to words if they are there. Therefore, the message is irrelevant. Personally, just needs to have a nice flow.

I usually just tell them I like all sorts of music and that it may sound weird to them. But almost all of the time, they respect my choices, even though at times they're completely left confused.

Yesterday the girl I'm going out with wanted to hear some of the music I usually listen to (she's listening to mostly popular stuff) and when I showed her Tool - Jambi she replied in a kind of disgusted way "this must be the kind of music mass murderers are listening to". I went on to play Nine Inch Nails - Hurt she found it too sad and could not understand how someone can listen to such music.

I should be above her comments but it still annoyed me.

That chart is incomplete, it doesn't even list the mumblings of Darryl Sutter.

Darryl really opens your mind and makes you question things. I constantly question if what I just heard was english or not.

That's pretty pathetic.

Listen to what you like. I listen to everything. My love for music knows no limits -- Kanye West, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, The Beatles, Queen, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, The Black Keys, Imagine Dragons, The Killers, Alexisonfire, Protest The Hero, Daft Punk, Justin Timberlake, Deadmau5, Zedd, etc. When people ask I literally say "I listen to everything because there's too much not to like something everywhere".

You shouldn't have to explain anything about the kind of music you like.

My tastes tend to be on music with symphonic sounds (but not symphonic only) so that includes a lot from metal to pop songs, however I have a few outsiders on my playlist, explaining tastes is super difficult, the most I do is playing my playlist and explain what I like x sonh for a moment then procceed.

If anything, having to listen to a pop radio station for an entire work shift should be what drives someone to mass murder!

IDK, this doesn't sound something your regular guy/girl would listen. With the "muted" vocals, in the same volume (or lower) of the guitars (which have a lot of effects on them) you have kinda of an ethereal yet chaotic sound. And I don't know how to describe music.
Just wanted an excuse to share this song :P

Quite liked that. I'm going to feel like a prick for asking it like this, but is there a translation of their name that will make it easier to search for their work?

I span the gamut, 1-6 overall, but stick mainly to 3-5.

I'm shocked we've gotten this far into the thread and no Lustmord has been posted:
Lustmord - Black Star.
His 'STALKER' soundtrack is chilling.

The romanization is Kinoko Teikoku, and it translates to Mushroom Empire.

That's not really everything though. Much of what you listed might be considered popular or top40. I can enjoy all of those bands too, but I still tend to avoid some of the things on lvl5/6 on that chart. Not that I'd dis someone for liking avant garde, but it's not for me.
