have we even seen a single image of gameplay from The 3rd Birthday yet?

Square has really missed the boat with no Parasite Eve on PS2 or PS3/360. Hopefully the 3rd makes up for it.

So I've been wondering if Chrono Trigger DS was just to squeeze some money out of their back catalogue. Given that it was a port of the SNES game and not a remake, it seems odd to me that they didn't do it earlier on the GBA like FFIVa, FFVa and FFVIa. I guess I was thinking that maybe it was to refresh interest in the series (if it can be called that) ahead of new projects maybe.

But I don't think any of the original CT team creators are still at SE

Kitase was one of CT's directors... and DQ's Yuji Horii is still employed by Square-Enix.

FFXI's Tanaka, maybe?

edit: beaten

A nice break between Kitase/Nojima FF's would be one that finally utilizes Amano's art style. I'm thinking a 'Valkyria Chronicles' look, but really taking advantage (as much as possible) of Amano's whimsical style.

Hell, an FFVI remake like that would be phenomenal, but it'll likely be more big-head chibi FFIV remake bullshit.

Prince of Persia's rendering style with Amano's art would make my head explode. Probably the only way they could pull it off.

A really enjoy Amano's art...but certainly wouldn't want it directly in a main line ff... A spin off in a PoP style using his art would be amazing...

Well the FF Dissidia characters have his art, and it looked great.

I would like it, but I wouldn't mind if it was re-adapted accordingly so it doesn't stray too far from what FF has become recently, but still offering something fresh.

They won't do that for a main FF anyway, Nomura's influence of J-Pop and cellphones is too strong.

Yuck Chrono Cross:|

Anyway I have hopes that since it has been so long since FFXI, and since it was mostly based on Everquest back then, they will have a learned a lot since and it will be awesome (but only if no furries...).

Can't wait for E3. Two months!
No Viera or Mithra-esque race, no buy!

Don't kill me people but I want FF XIII VS to be announced on the 360. That's the only way I'll be able to play the game :(
You could buy a PS3. :D

However, making it exclusive is as stupid as making SO4 exclusive was.

You can't really charge 40 bucks for a GBA game!

Not even close, SO4 was a tarnish on the series who's exclusivity is not missed. IMO.

:D

There was nothing it tarnished that wasnt already a weakness of the series.

Did anything ever happen with the other alleged Crystallis game, Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII?

Nothing's ever been officially mentioned, but then I wouldn't expect it to be, at least not until FFXIII is finally out.

I hope it's a Tactics style game, they don't have the SRPG angle covered yet.

FFXIII - traditional RPG
FFVersusXIII - action RPG
FFAgitoXIII - coop multiplayer RPG
?Rapture? - MMORPG?

No way is Rapture a part of Fabula Nova Crystalis.

Also, you're a bad person for even suggesting the thought that Haerasis could be an awesome Tactics-esque SRPG. Valkyria Chronicles has blown most grid-based SRPGs out of the water, but I'd still love to go back to original FFT game mechanics and their tick-based turn/ability charge management with next-gen technology and HD graphics. Valkyria Chronicles is pretty much the only SRPG I've ever enjoyed where each team takes a turn instead of individual characters taking turns.

:/

Necklace doesn't look too great without the context of the game D:

Honestly, as much as I love VC, the game's kind of broken in several respects, so I don't think it blows grid-based strategy games out of the water. I'd love for there to be another tactics game though :<

tactics was pretty broken once you got cid...I enjoyed tactics alot, but as the game was purely battle based I felt the formula was worn by the end of the game...they would need to make substantial changes to interest me

I don't think that it blows the concept of grid-based SRPGs out of the water in the least, and I agree that it's certainly a flawed game. It's mainly that most grid-based SRPGs in the past several years (notably the FFTA games and everything from NIS) have been pretty mediocre.

Yeah, Tactics certainly isn't a balanced game in the least, but it's a fun one.

...perhaps a mishmash of Tactics and the Parasite Eve/Vagrant Story combat system (but without the repetition and dull dungeon crawling and no breaking of weapons)?

I'd like to see that.

Ah nice. Right, here was the thing I was talking about a few weeks ago from the article.

We ask Kitase if, as he settles into his 40s, he ever thinks about those members of the Final Fantasy audience who have also grown up with the series. After all, even those players who only joined the fanbase with the seventh game in the series, the first to make a truly global impact, are now entering their 30s. Surely the expectations of these players and the things that they look out for in games are different now to what they were ten, 15 years ago. Is Square Enix interested in changing the tone or theme or style its output to meet these changing needs of the audience?

“I actually think that it’s a very natural thing for players to grow out of the Final Fantasy series,” he answers. “In terms of the age group we target with each new game, it remains the teens to 20-somethings. That said, you’re right in saying that some of our staff have been working on the series for many years. They are having new experiences and growing and they inevitably do bring those new ideas and perspectives to their work. In Final Fantasy XIII, for example, we have a greater spread of older characters in the story than we have had in the past. Satzu is older, has a family and is not really the kind of character one would normally encounter or play as in the series. But, that said, I think it’s better that we keep the focus on the young generation rather than ageing the series’ appeal. If players choose to stick around and continue playing the games as they grow older then that’s great, but hopefully new generations will find the appeal, grow up with the series and then pass that down to the next generation as they themselves grow older”.

The decision to aim the series towards younger game fans is one Square Enix has had to consciously take in the past. In Final Fantasy XII, Yasumi Matsuno originally intended for Balthier, a much older member of the core cast, to take on the role of lead protagonist. Reportedly, it was felt that casting players as a 40-year-old man would alienate a large slice of the fanbase, so the decision was taken to focus on the much younger character of Vaan.

Actually, now that I think about it, that excerpt might make an interesting thread on its own. It'd be interesting to see some opinions on it from a lot of the people who don't normally read this thread.

Mind if I break it out Kagari? It's not exactly related to the FNC series so much as it is to Final Fantasy as a whole, but since you're managing this whole thread I thought I'd ask first.

Edit: Kagari seems to have disappeared and I have to go soon so I think I'll go put one up. Hopefully she doesn't mind.

Regardless of what age they assign to Lightning she definitely seems mature...early thirties or late twenties...so they have already broken that statement really... Snow seems like he is in his mid to late twenties as well...

SolidSnakex said:
You can't really blame them. The demographic they target works for them.

Bingo, a 40-year old male lead would definitely scare away the demographics they are aiming for.

The same reason why they never have a 30-year old lead in Shonen Jump, Shonen Sunday, or Shonen Magazine Comics.

Isn't Lightning going to be the "lead" in FF13 the same way that Terra was the lead in FF6?
