Everyone slow down, I cant keep up with the pace of this thread...

OT: Wonder if this acquisiton would give Msoft more or less incentive to get in the VR game?

Valve is now our greatest hope for VR.

"Please sign into your facebook account to use the Oculus VR System."

"Would you like to share your score with your friends?"

"Your farm has new crops. Now in VR."

Ya'll getting all upset because Facebook bought into a technology that should be massive in the next ten years. VR goes far beyond gaming and you're insane if you think this stops the Rift from being used heavily in games. Absolutely crazy.

Thank you Sony for Morpheus. Fuck the Oculus team.

Yeah, fuck them for being a business that needs FINANCIAL CAPITAL to continue surviving and growing.

Morpheus it is, thanks Sony

also, wondering if there could be any legal issue considering people backed/funded this through kickstarter

I have to LOL at the reactions here. Like there is ANYONE who would not sell out for 2 BILLION US DOLLARS. You're starting at a potentially risky product that may never make that much and on the other hand you're retiring to some tropical island with a shit load of money and FB stock options.

I think this is great news. Everyone here is making it seem like if this is the worst news ever. For once, Facebook has done a great acquisition, as opposed to worthless shit like Instagram. Also, this signals to me that facebook is ready to start diversifying from their social media products. We want companies like google, who invest heavily in research based projects like the self-driving cars. Now FB is doing the same thing.

Does this make it less or more of a threat to Morpheus?

Or is it about the same where they benefit from one another's existence?

Less of a threat, because Oculus' tremendous advantage over Morpheus was going to be the availability of porn, which is the driving force behind the large scale adoption of any new entertainment media format. Now, though, I would say there is room for a third company to move in with "adult" content of that nature as its focus.

I would. Challenge me, Facebook. I'm totally gonna say no. Totally. Just give me a contract that promises me $2bn and I'll show you all how I'm gonna refuse the money.

If you have a facebook account they probably sold your details on for nothing. So you didn't have a say to begin with and you got zip.

Your social life is in jeopardy. Your contacts are infected. SMS is the virus. Social media and instant messaging is the cure. Assemble your team and fight for freedom.

Virtual WhatsApp. 2014. Phoning a friend is your only lifeline.

So, how do the guys feel who have ordered OR?

I'm happy about this.

Zuckerberg seems to have the right mindset in this case and his vision would appear to align with that of Palmer. This will give VR the best chance it can possibly have to take off and become the next big thing.

PlayStation wins big here by default. It's like the MS Presser all over again. To bad ol Jack can't come out on stage and deliver FB one liners.

Although this is rather unexpected, I really can't understand all the people crying about this.

The company we all like is being bought by a much bigger company that isn't exactly liked, but it's hardly Monsanto or Blackwater.

Weren't they having problems securing enough parts for the dev kits? With the cash injection the company will get, they can get all the parts they need. Maybe even get the Oculus a little cheaper since production will probably grow.

Facebook certainly has enough money to push this thing even further, but it's an odd match, not entirely sure where they're going with it, it's a completely different market for them so it's whether they're realistically looking at selling the hardware or just want to make money off patents? now they can see companies like Sony taking it seriously.

Probaby will stay the same as it was before, to be honest. Maybe even more goodies cause of more funds from Facebook.
This question probably will get more serious answers on page 50, to be honest
I think facebook wants this for something unrelated to gaming.

The VR reality has been a dream from an academic perspective.

Gaming is really a small or minuscule portion of what you could do.

Facebook have lots of money. This could be good for them. They can put more into R&D, more into advertising, and more into development.

It just depends all on if they restrict it to FB games, which lets be honest, would never fucking happen.

So....will Facebook treat Oculus Rift as a form of console platform in-and-of-itself?

Oculus Rift + Facebook page = play game?

or...will we still be able to use Steam, etc...?

If I have to login to Facebook to play my game....that's just not gonna happen....

I think the two fears are that Facebook, regardless of what they say, just want the people working at Oculus and have no interest in the Rift. The other fear is that this will turn the Rift into some casual-focused thing that no one here cares about. I don't see how you could ever sell the Rift to anyone other than someone legitimately interested in VR, but if ever there was a company to try, it's Facebook.

Okay, so having already gone through all of the stages, anger, denial, etc, I have come to a conclusion.

This may actually be a good thing for virtual reality; perhaps not for the people devoted to Oculus, but VR in general. Billions of people log into FB every day, and will be exposed to something completely new and likely inundated with VR information. Previously, we were all talking about how VR would be cool but super niche and probably not take off for the masses.

Well, Zuckerberg decided to change that.

While I still have nightmarish visions of Oculus being subsidized and ad-supported, for the rest of the VR industry, it spreads wonderful awareness.

This is the best thing that could have happened to Sony. This is the XB1 reveal all over again imho.
