That's always how I imagined those scenes really being though. You know the scene, the girl stands and makes some remark over how she's leaving and the guy limpy makes a slow effort to grab her arm and misses then watches her walk away, surely that wasn't a real effort right? Surely it was just some kind of half-measure to make it look like he tried so he can't be a total ass to bystanders. I mean, if he really didn't want her to leave and by some chance he did miss with his first grab he could always get up and like, I dunno, try grabbing her again unless he dates nothing but Olympic sprinters or some shit I fail to see how they can almost always get away.

I meant the part about liking Robotech

I really don't like Robotech :(

Who says I haven't? And are you implying I quoted too high a price for the goods I offered you? I assure you that was a discount that I would only give to you.

I refuse to believe there is anyone who has played it who doesn't lapse into uncontrollable rage at the mere sight of that avaricious little tart.

That's pretty much what I meant, Azumanga Daioh is the same way. Top offenders go to miss clumsy and miss scatterbrain but the show isn't built around these events, which is a good thing.

I suppose I should watch AD sometime. :lol

Yet the Town Goes On 5:

I'm starting to sense a theme with all the females pursuing clueless males. At least with the elementary school kids it makes sense, although ironically Takeru seems to be the male most aware of the girl's feelings.

Azumanga is perfection. I only realised a few episodes in.

Sakaki>everyone.
Osaka is the most humorous character, followed closely by Tomo.

I'm surprised you've never watched a show with some of the best mono no aware moments in a show not specifically dedicated to mono no aware. The scene in the park with the clouds will certainly cause you to contemplate the bittersweet transience of life, as well as other scenes.

Jexhius said:
Admittedly my current favourite would probably be the Gunsmith Cats OP. It doesn't use footage footage from the show as a backing, it's got awesome music and importantly the whole thing feels very well thought out.

All of my favorites are from the 80s/90s, off the top of my head.

I think I read somewhere that the anime diverges from the manga significantly or something so I just put it off. Not that I'm going to pick up the manga any time soon either though... :lol

Gasp, now I'm on the defensive?

Ehh, maybe since I only tried the demo, I didn't care too much for the game as a whole to get to the point where I'd hate a specific character from it.

Anyways.....
-----------------------------------------------------------
MM! 6, his family is the type of character I'd truly hate, not some little girl out shopping, damn incest wannabe shit isn't funny so having a whole episode around it wasn't amusing in the slightest. Next episode looks to really suck as they seem to be reviving the pervert energy from episode 5, keep digging that hole.

Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteir 5, still not a great show but I really like the stupid main character and find some of it amusing. When they're going to make the blond upperclassman a ral character I dunno, they need to hurry because the little brother sucks, but the little sister's ok.

To Aru Majutsu no Index II 5, pretty uninspiring and what the fuck did they do to Kanzaki? God damnit, now she's no fucking different from Railgun except she's got a bigger chest. I don't remember this shit. At least they finally finished the nun battle and we can move on but if they've reduced kanzaki to a damn Misaka with a sword I'm not sure if I wanna follow.

The manga is a 4koma... I would hope they'd be different.

Though the anime does use quite a lot of the jokes from the manga, as well as original ones. The only thing I can really think of them leaving out in the anime is when Osaka works at McDonald's. There are some parts each medium is better at, but the moments I'm thinking of definitely work better in animated form.

MM - I assume the point was that his mother and sister smother him so much that he derives pleasure from being abused... or some such.

SoreMachi - I just like that they seem to be adapting from wherever they feel is thematically relevant rather than trying to follow some kind of order. That first half was basically a retelling of the first or second episode. I figure that blond girl is right up your alley though. :lol

Hrm. You know, now that I think about it, I might have mixed up Fruits Basket and AZ. :lol

That's nothing new for SHAFT, they did the same thing with Hidamari Sketch. Probably the same for SZS and Pani Poni Dash too.

That's a pretty odd mixup.

Yep, I know. It seems to make sense to do it this way in these short anthology adaptations. Create episodes based on theme rather than chronology.

That's a pretty odd mixup.
I think both books have similar looking girls on the cover or something. :lol

I actually agree that that's probably the setup, as terrible as it is.

In things without actual plots I don't mind, but I don't think the first half was a retelling, was it?

Lol, well I don't know if she is or isn't because she only makes appearances for like 30 seconds an episode!

She's easily mistaken for a 12 year old boy, so yeah!

And yeah, there was an earlier episode where the girl gives up the movie ticket in order to spend time with the guy. In that episode, the focus was on Arashima and whatever she was up to at the moment (detention, maybe? I can't remember), so we don't really find out what happened to the other girl.

Damn you Firehawk12! The fetish isn't specifically looking like a 12 year old boy, that makes me sound worse than I already am. Lol.

Maybe that specific scene went by too quick and I missed it.

Yeah, I'm sure if you watch it again you'd see it right away. It's almost like the two K-On!! episodes they did where each was from a different perspective.

And, 12 year old boy... tomboy, close enough. :lol

Sorta, I mean in terms of classic examples you're of course correct, but I like to think my stereotypical fetishes aged along with me instead of staying frozen in time.

Started and finished Space Adventure Cobra. I guess it was ok but it was pretty unvaried from start to end. I have to give props for the futuristic setting, some of those futuristic cities were really well designed and reminded me of good times when cyberpunk was in. I really need some another similar show (when it comes to setting) this show didn't fill my apetite for cyberpunk... Also why did all the women in space adventure wore some kind of thong bikini clothings ? :lol Even the high ranking police officers wore thongs/bikinis/etc. :lol

Sailor Moon 1: Lol rose petals is dis sum Utena?

omg nostalgia rush

The animation style feels so dated. It's like when I watched endless waltz for the first time in years except a hundred times worse.
It doesn't help that the master used for the ADV dvds is not good at all. The video is washed out and the audio is muffled.

Looking through old openings on YT that might be considered good, Hikaru no Go's 2nd OP was nice. You know seeing it now under the context of what makes a good OP, I just noticed how great it really was today.

Eh, that's kinda standard.

For the very top end of good OPs IMO, here's the ones I mentioned earlier.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIiYp16gm4c&feature=related - Hana Yori Dango
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp9TUMJugnw - Brain Powerd

Some of my other favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga_aTC1MCY0 - Macross 7
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eipAAPGGhoU - Future GPX Cyber Formula
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW4atnm_5h0&feature=related - Slam Dunk OP1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfnmfE7fI-E - Patlabor OP1 though all the openings are good. Patlabor is one of the few animes where the cast gets top billing in the credits by being in the OP.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc0T04wKlkQ&feature=related - Blue Seed, more so on the animation being in sync with the song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vTjNEZ3kcE - Irresponsible Captain Tylor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qtac6uabSI - Metal Armor Dragonar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE4ELJIHwgw - 08th MS Team

There's a bunch more but it'd take forever to list.

Five Star Stories
Bishounen!

Now is the manga worth looking into...

Everything about that looks and sounds horribly generic.
To each their own I guess. I thought it was neat how each of Hikaru's classmates are introduced in like one long continuous flow until Akari is shown. Perhaps I'm thinking different = good? They also did some foreshadowing I've never noticed before
like the growing distant relationship between Sai and Hikaru, and the future match between Touya Meijin and Sai.
I even thought the sunset was a nice touch because I remember 1 episode relating the center of the Go board to the center of the universe, so I liked how the setting sun seemingly represented that and "the divine move." Probably read too much into it.

As for the music being generic, I might agree. I still think it's a nice song though. It's not Hajimari no Kaze good or Sousei no Aquarion catchy good, but at least it's not as generic as Guin Saga's opening theme.

I seldom watch an OP/ED more than a few times, and I'm more likely to remember the song I like hearing, so I don't even know what a good OP is.

I'll check your links later.

Speaking of taking forever to list :

What makes an OP interesting is of course, highly subjective. Is it the music, the visuals, the editing, the animation, the imagery, the tone or a combination of all of the above? Time for some unnecessary categorization!

Cutting between scenes via match-on action or graphic
Here’s some OP’s that move cleverly between one frame and the next , often moving through or using a particular point of the frame as a transition. These also often have a match-on-action or match-on-graphic to keep the flow of the OP going.

Kimagure Orange Road
OP 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLDId5K0RP0&p=007DC0437CF22B1C&playnext=1&index=57

Dirty Pair OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNd6SpmeBqY

Brains Base do this all the damn time:
Baccano! OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msg8ypnLqaw
It’s not quite as perfect here, but it’s still good Durarara!! OP 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nlDUZ5BkFk
Even less so here, but there’s some match-on-graphics present Kuragehime OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpDZ9PhDknY

It’s rather overt in this Arakawa Under the Bridge OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPXmvqZIn8Q

Experitmental/Collage
Speaking of SHAFT OP’s…well they’ve certainly got a lot of them. The ‘Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei’ series of works is nearly has a different variation on the main OP every episode. The finished OP’s are rather strange collage pieces for the most past, getting aggressively weirder every season. Certainly not to everyone’s taste. Or even most peoples.

(NSFW, probably) Sayonara OP Final: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM8ODecbuhA
Zoku OP Final: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kjuVGK-rmU&feature=related
Goku OP Final: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKRHiue2sIM&feature=related
Zan OP Final : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjuF1qAb1Tg&feature=related

And like, a million in between. The ED’s are even experimental forays into different art styles such as -
Zoku ED Final: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFySh9l2zRk

In terms of collage OP’s that mix animation with other mediums and also set the tone for the main show we have -
Ergo Proxy OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xe4F0DMUGA
Serial Experiments Lain OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70CXOaZ3BPc&p=57E3206EE0E81101&playnext=1&index=7

Stylish
On the other side of the coin from experimental we have extremely stylish OP’s. That’s a pretty useless description because pretty much all the following OP’s are like that. Ah well.

These often take on a unique visual style that isn't present in the show themselves.

Gunsmith Cats OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXE4wO-Qt48
Cowboy Bebop OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zDfxZ4NcE
Michiko e Hatchin OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwfI8BYD9d8

I’ve just bunched these together because they seem somewhat similar in their use of colours, pop-art visuals and energetic pacing.

There’s also the 2nd Ghost in the Shell OP, which is certainly given a hand by the Yoko Kanno track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6f-jbMN5oQ

Death Note’s OP is definitely a favourite of mine. The symbolism may be far from subtle and it actually contains spoilers but that doesn’t stop it from being awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEGKYBwvhJs

The Eden of the East OP doesn’t contain that much flashy animation but it does contain crazy awesome visual design: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwLsw9MlzJQS

Tone setting
Then there’s some rather OP’s that set the tone for their show. Clearly the stylish ones like Cowboy Bebop do that already, but there are others that aren’t quite as explosive. Frankly, most of the other OP’s I enjoy from the 2000’s fit into this overly-broad category.

Despite the flaws present in the rest of the show, the Elfin Lied OP (largely because of the soundtrack but also the Gustav Klimt imagery) certainly creates a heavy, serious tone for the show (NSFW)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwFXPZIwuMI&p=1A22B0C8E064F051&playnext=1&index=41

The Monster OP perfectly encapsulates the mood throughout much of the show as portrays Tenma in a variety of hunted situations. Once again, music plays a big part in setting the tone here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt-i-6N4Uyk

The Crest of the Stars OP is awesome. The music just sounds like a space soundtrack, and the visuals are nothing but snapshots of the universe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJEBcXIqNp0

Whatever one’s view of the show is, the K-On! Opening sets up the correct mood. The actual composition of the scenes is pretty excellent too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOxM5yuX4OU

All three Hajime no Ippo OP’s. They’re all excellent, with ridiculous music. OP1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfySNmk6Jr8&feature=related, OP2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1VNM57PHms&feature=related, OP3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vbuobfmBgE&feature=related.

City Hunter OP 2 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwzln50lYao&feature=related

Soredemo OP because it's weird and quirky and awesome:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCKQ7HkjsRQ

Encapsulates the theme/setting/story of the work
This category is fairly self explanatory.

The Gurren Lagann OP lays out the over-the-top and Super Robot stylings of the work pretty succinctly, even if it’s structure is rather traditional: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgKSjUOrgQQ

The Planetes OP is one that I have to mute, but the imagery captures the advancement of man’s technology in his quest to conquer the stars. The bits with the crew are rather basic and perhaps even unnecessary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ-OyT4ivkM

The Hatakari Man OP is nearly the show distilled into 1.5 minutes : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5d4CxHaguw

I have to bring up the Oniisama…e opening because it cleverly ties in with the main show in a way that isn’t entirely obvious (compare and contrast to the overt Death Note OP): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHOnyWTVF7k&feature=related

Talking of clever openings, the Gundam 08th MS Team OP is pretty damn good.
It largely sets the tone of a gritty, realistic (for mecha) battle in the dirt and the sand. We see the main characters outside their Gundams, doing normal things. We see the Gundams as just another tool on the battlefield, juxtaposed with tanks and boats. Indeed, the show even makes fun of them. We see the patrol boat completely overtake the slow, clumsy Gundam as it tries to wade up river. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksY16RxbAqk

On an unrelated note, I have a soft spot for the first three Gundam 00 openings. I can’t justify why. Especially as a lot of it is just re-cut show footage.

Invasion! Squid Girl 1 - And people complain that K-On is a moe blob show. This was sorta kinda fun but ultimately pointless. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue watching to be honest. Other than cuteness, this show didn't really offer me anything in the first episode.

I love Daybreak's Bell quite a bit. Ash Like Snow too, but not as much.

A recent OP I really like (even though I didn't like the show all that much) was Again, the first OP from FMA: Brotherhood.

Daybreak's Bell is the better song, but Ash Like Snow has better visuals for the OP.

I really like that one as well. BONES shows tend to have good OP's, which ironically meant that I couldn't chose any particular one as my favourite.

Wolf's Rain has cool music, Rahxephon has cool music and visuals, X'amd's is very stylish and Eurkea Seven's OP's tend to have excellent animation and choreography.

Talking about OPs, eh? I got a ton of favorites but they're mostly of shounen adaptations. Pretty easy to find at least one you like since per show since there's always so many.

Naruto Opening 4 : This is a good one because it made the most boring arc in part 1 look cool. Song was catchy too.

FMA Brotherhood Opening 2
: All the Brotherhood openings are good, but this one stands out the most to me. They were able to pack a ton of content into it and Ed's interaction with Hohenheim and Scar was perfect with the song.

Reborn Opening 2: While the opening itself is good, I think the genre shift is really what elevated it to favorite status for me. It's particularly memorable because I dropped the series at first thinking it was just a dumb comedy but then eventually watched this opening and was shocked to see the useless main character actually looking cool.

Bleach Opening 12: This one is just crazy since they were able to pack pretty much a second of every fight that happens into it. Yeah, it's spoiler heavy as fuck but it's also damn epic.

One Piece Opening 5: A good opening elevated to great status as it signified the switch to HD (or at least the art/animation quality getting much better).

Too lazy to find more youtube videos, so I'll just list other ones I like.

Fairy Tail opening 4
Flame of Recca
Pokemon Johto League (Shut up)
D Gray Man opening 3
Hunter x Hunter G.I. Final
Soul Eater
Tokyo Underground
Gurren Lagann
Konjiki no Gash
Rave
Law of Ueki
Cowboy Bebop
Black Lagoon
Dragonball Kai
Nabari no ou
Shangri-la
Utawarerumono
Noein
Maburaho
Great Teacher Onizuka opening 2
Getbackers opening 2

And probably like 50 more.

Hell yeah.

I don't think I should drink anymore. x: Apparently I blacked out and got extremely violent at the bar. Watched Panty and Stocking and MM! when I sobered up a bit but I don't really remember what happened in them. Going to make myself a pizza and enjoy today since my head is pounding.

Yea... you should probably be more careful >.>

I blame the absolute restriction of drinking for anyone under 21 for why younger people are such bad drinkers.

(Although. it's never happened to me, I think we're about the same age...)

Wow. Just...yikes.

I’ll say.

Ghost Hound 12: I’m enjoying the slow breakdown of this relatively composed psychiatrist.

I especially delighted in the earlier scene, where he believes that the room he’s investigating is devoid of strangeness and then he sees that thing.

But erm, is this the kind of thing you discuss in a bar, in front of strangers?

Turns out Miyako can be a bit of an ungrateful bitch:

Oh yeah, Taro just tried to cheer you up, dealt with your possession by a spirit, saved you from drowning and then carried you back you a large distance on his back. Don't offer him even a drink or some food. Jeeze.

Ghost Hound 13: In which Taro talks to dead people, a Snaru and yeast.

We finally get to explore a bit more of the ‘Unseen World’ and probe it’s general weirdness.

Turns out it’s pretty freaky.

Taro also seems to be returning to that whole ‘dead sister thing’ – what a downer.

I’ve also been wondering if Taro, or any of the boys, would ever use their powers for some good old-fashioned spying on people. I’m surprised it took this long:

But it's for a good cause, right?
