Oh man if you thought I was wordy
before
I swear I'm just writing these as I go along, I don't really have any set length in mind.
A Certain Magical Index 5
It's only been a day and I've already forgotten what the hell is going on in this show. That's not a good sign.
Oh right, perfect memorization, Index will die if she doesn't forget, Touma gets the shit beaten out of him, now I'm up to speed!
The whole thing kinda doesn't make sense to me actually. Even if we operate under the assumption that most of Index's brain is filled with those books, under what reasonable circumstances can any significant portion of a person's memory really be filled within one year, even with something as silly as "perfect memorization". I mean, the brain is pretty damn efficient at storing information and it seems unlikely to me that being unable to forget visual or aural information, no matter how vast, over the course of one year would be significantly more taxing on the brain than just any normal dude going about his business. I mean, it's obvious those magicians are leaving something out, I just wonder what it's going to be.
You know, for whatever reason I haven't bothered to start skipping the OP yet. Hmm, on one hand, it isn't pretty nice to watch, much like the Shana one. On the other hand, maybe it's because it's still the only real interesting part of this show so far. Just a random thought while I wait the requisite 1:30.
The episode begins with a shot of Loli-sensei leaving her house. This shot lasts exactly 35 seconds for no good reason. Yes I'm going to keep harping on this show's pacing, dealwithit.gif -- Index is sleeping in bed while Touma watches her. The memory crap doesn't happen until midnight, so the cliffhanger from last episode was, of course, all for nought, as they leave her be for the rest of the night.
Sword chick calls up Touma (a rotary phone? Really?) "Bring Index to me" "BLARGH ARGH" "stfu" Touma insightfully points out that if grimoires were so powerful Index should be able to find a way to deal with the memory issue. It of course is brushed aside with "the church won't allow it" and "there's no hope for her now anyway" but eh, I have to give this show credit for at least trying to justify its own universe instead of either ignoring obvious contradictions or explaining them away in vague unsatisfying manners. Now if only the show didn't completely sabotage itself by doing this we could be going somewhere with all this. -- Touma then shows another surprising amount of insight by positing that science could have a solution that magic doesn't, except that Sword chick correctly counters by saying it's too much of a risk. After this Touma regresses to GAML mode and tells sword chick to piss off. -- And now we have... more babbling, followed by Touma calling Loli-sensei (who's in the bath, of course) and everyone else he knows. Midnight comes and goes, and Touma hears footsteps. Fun times ahead!
After the commercial break, the magicians show up, Touma tries to convince them otherwise out of desperation, and in what's actually a pretty compelling scene, fire mage calls his bluff and gives him the chance to disspell the magic he's using with his hand right then and there in front of everybody, pointing out that he would be extending Index's suffering by doing so no matter what happens from there. -- Under sword chick's urging, they give him a chance for one last goodbye. After a scene of absolutely no surprises (though also probably the only scene up to this point with actual GOOD music supporting it thank god...) Touma finally breaks down and... oh hey what's this, what a twist.
I swear I didn't watch this scene before writing those ramblings above, honest.
So apparently the memory killing bullshit is just that, and that the Church is using the lie to control Index and her friends. Touma decides to take matters into his own hands (haha hands, get it... shut up). He finds a spell hidden in Index's mouth and touches it. One shocking recoil later Index switches to babble mode and starts floating in the air. After some mindless droning Index makes "St George's Sanctuary" in order to destroy the unexpected "intruder" and... the episode ends.
I mean, yay, I guess stuff actually happened this time but... okay, so in this episode 1) Touma despairs about Index losing her memories. 2) Magicians show up, verbally abuse Touma, start their spell. 3) Touma is left alone and says goodbye to Index. 4) Touma realizes the whole thing is a sham and tries to nullify the spell causing this whole ordeal. 5) Safety mechanism kicks in. Did we really need an entire 22 minute episode for that? We like to joke about Dragon Ball Z's glacial pacing, but that had just as much to do with the fact that there was actually a
lot of material to cover as it was the pace that material was presented. We're five episodes into this show and I don't really feel like a lot has happened. Touma meets Index, Fire mage attacks Index, Touma fights back, Loli-sensei heals Index, Sword chick explains the memory bullshit and they attempt to carry it out. I dunno, maybe this material does suit itself better to novel form, where you expect to spend some time being given information about each major event as the situation allows it, but in a uniformly-linear timed format like a television show you need to be able to scale each event in terms of how much time actually passes as opposed to how much time is needed to explain everything. That's the whole idea behind an adaptation! Toradora's anime cut out quite a lot from its source material, especially early on, and while that may have caused the adaptation to suffer in certain ways, it still managed to work because JC Staff actually understood what parts of the novel were actually integral to furthering the plot and focused on those while simplifying the interesting but still superfluous fluff to make sure it held our attention. I haven't read the Index novels, but it's pretty obvious from watching it that there was quite a lot they could have done to keep things from stretching out too much. Do you see what happens when I decide to really speak my mind? And believe me, I'm just getting started, I'm still holding back here. Trying to pick out which one of my many random thoughts to actually put on this computer screen is quite difficult. Damn my chronic inability to be succinct!
Okay I'm done for now. I promise. Despite all my ramblings above, this episode was actually interesting, so there may yet be hope for this yet.
