Fallout 4 sells 1.2 million copies on Steam in 24 hours

I think we are far past the point where anyone honestly believes that or that PC gaming is dying

Dont you dare fucking say that. PC has to be dying. Its like a law of the universe. Who know what would happen if it were proven to be untrue.

Didn't Skyrim take ages before getting a proper pricedrop on Steam? Expecting the same for Fallout 4.
Yeah, but my point is that people will desperately hope for even 25% off, not see it, and then buy the game anyway because they thought maybe if they held out they'd get a discount.

Happens with every game that comes out near a major sale, GTAV being the last big game people desperately wished for.

Console versions are mediocre and more people have gaming PCs than ever before?

The consoles will sell more as "AAA" is practically the bread and butter of that market, and heavily promoted to them. The fact that it has done so well on Steam is more to do with the popularity of FO3 and NV on PC, and similar to Elder Scrolls, catering to the same Bethesda fans, modding with all the tools on the way later etc. PC folks do love RPGs in general. Most "AAA" titles are not as popular on PC.

Fallout 4 also has the highest concurrent usage of a non-Valve game on Steam, having a concurrent user peak yesterday of 444,825 - which will likely be topped on Sunday typically. The next highest was GTA V at launch with 360,761 concurrent players

This actually depresses me, but maybe they'll throw some of that money Obsidian's way.

Actually, honestly, for those of us who want an Obsidian Fallout, we want this Fallout to be a money maker for Bethesda. Because I'm pretty sure Fallout New Vegas was commissioned to be a money grab while the Fallout name was still really hot (I'm betting that's why they focused so much on telling them they only had 2 years to do it, they wanted to get it out while the name was still hyped up but they wanted Bethesda Studios focusing on Skyrim so they outsourced). If this Fallout does well enough, they may decide it's worth it again to get Obsidian to make another game (while they focus on Elder Scrolls) to do another money grab. Sadly they probably still won't give them enough time (gotta strike while that iron is hot) but hell, look at what Obsidian did with even not having enough time.

Bethesda games tend to attract a strong PC presence. And as a followup to the massively successful Skyrim, Fallout 4 selling a lot is to be expected. However, such strong sales right out of the gate is a bit surprising. We should see a very strong and vibrant modding community for this game, but that was obvious from the very beginning.

But I still don't want Fallout in this engine with these mechanics. Grafting Obsidian writing and tweaks onto the existing mess isn't an ideal solution either.

No idea, but I'm sure there's plenty of others that that wouldn't have sprang to mind.
I saw that comment and I just immediately thought of holiday sales.
You can also factor in things like other sites already offering vastly cheaper prices than Steam is now, but there's still always going to be arguments against that as well. Like people not trusting other sites, or people just being unfamiliar with PC gaming and other sites/places to buy cheaper.

I got Fallout 4 for something like ÂŁ26. That's cheap enough for me.

I'll just say it, I'm fine with it being in this engine. For what this engine allows me to do in the game it's worth the bugs to me. And Obsidian being more focused on making a good RPG would once again fix what was wrong with this Fallout hopefully and make a good RPG that has the good elements i like about this game. Only thing I'd worry about is if Obsidian (or Bethesda pushing Obsidian) would feel that now that they have voice acting that they need to use that (and that damned dialogue wheel. I think I could get over the VA part without that stupid dialogue wheel). Even so, I bet Obsidian would still do it better even if they were forced to use those.

Plus, honestly, west coast fallout. I just like the west coast better (plus Boston never interested me).

Curious to see if the mod support is there (meaning, not totally obfuscated by requiring Bethesda's weird client-hub-thing instead of Steam Workshop integration) to make it an evergreen title like Skyrim.

I dont see why they wouldnt be forced to use VA and thus truncated dialogue options.

No, I meant I hope they give Obsidian a spinoff to make in the manner of New Vegas.
Think gaffers will excuse the bugs and jank because it's made by obsidian? The hate for Bethesda has been strong the last couple days. Gamers sure do love this Bethesda formula, sales will prove that.

Nice, especially because it's a singleplayer only experience. Good to see games like that do massive numbers.
Hopefully the console numbers will follow the pc sales.

I've read time and time again here on gaf that 95% of pc sales come from steam sales so we are looking at 20M+ copies one day.

Sorry if my math is wrong I don't know how it works.

Mods. In particular for me command console access to remove the weight limit lol

Just a minor point. There's bound to also be people not buying on PC this year because they've heard consoles will have mods.
Regardless of what the modding will actually be like there.

Doubt it'll be significant, but it's still likely.

Gaffers will excuse it while the media will finally grow something approaching a spine and dock it 10 points like last time.

This makes me smile. I love steam. Glad others do too.

It's not necessarily that they love steam...its that this game requires steam to be played on the PC. Not to say that a lot of people care, but there isn't another option from my understanding. You have to go through steam even if you buy from another vendor.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong

I am a gamer who hates the Bethesda formula, and the bugs and jank are only a tiny part of it.

Also, GAF has a strong track record of excusing Obsidian's bugs and jank.

What could the reason be for not using the Steam Workshop? For people like myself (who want to use mods, but not really spend a lot of time and effort), it's a great and easy way of using mods.

They might be, I honestly could see it sadly. But.. I still think Obsidian would at least do it better. I mean I'll say Witcher did it better anyways (it's not even that it is a dialogue wheel, so far from what I've seen it's the opposite of what they claimed about trying to make it so you knew what you were responding , it's not done well to give you any idea of what you are actually saying).

Is it?

I figured, with that massive Steam install base, it would have pulled in much more.

Was personally expecting something almost doubled that total.

Especially for such a PC centric series.

It's massive - Day 1, PC only, 1.2 million.... holy shit, this is crazy big.

Console will be at least 4-5 times that amount easy on day one....could be looking at 7-8 million (across all platforms) in the first week.
