False advertising in Steam sale.

This thread is fucking ridiculous. Also, you do realise that the number of people predicting/complaining about the "Valve fanboys iz gonna turn up soon!!!" far outnumber the people actually defending Valve, and that you sound like idiots, right?

Valve have karma in the bank, EA don't. Simple as that.

Is steam legally obligated to honor the price of L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition for $4.99 because it is being advertised as such even though there is no way for me to purchase it at that price through their store?

If Valve can somehow work some magic and get Rockstar to port RDR to PC - you know, the game we wanted so much more than LA Noire! - I will forgive them for this minor mistake.

what it really is a case of is that both companies make mistakes of when there's miscommunication etc. these things happen but they're generally small things that get corrected.

what's amusing however is how all the ea fans, in typical fashion, are trying to use this as evidence to suggest that valve are just as bad as ea. when it's pretty clear to anyone who is a blind fanboy drone that valve are generally pro-consumer, and ea are generally anti-consumer.

Bullshit.

Diablo 3 just sold more than 6 million copies on PC without Valve or Steam being involved at all.

bullshit. im talking about publishers even having dedicated platform to do sales on pc and not only one company.

publishers wouldn't even bother doing even consoles ports

steam has a 40 mil+ install base on pc and is the only thing that unifies and simplifies pc gaming.

now everyone tries to copy it....

say whatever you like. try to remember a couple years ago.

pc gaming=steam.
gaming pc = steam.

also check the diablo 3 player count.

if anyone other than Valve did this people would be calling for their heads.

Well, no, you didn't get my point: there's already a huge summer sales thread where you can complain about that kind of things without creating a whole new thread.

It's not even that big of a deal: in the end, OP just got disappointed, not ripped. People need to stop acting like spoiled children all the time.

Are you 12? PC gaming was around and much more popular than it is now a long, long time before Steam ever turned up.

So they used the wrong image and now everyone is flipping out, not only about the image mistake, but about Valve/EA favoritism?

Only on GAF

That hack was of their forums, not of Steam itself, and Valve conducted themselves according to best practices by notifying people quickly, and detailing the extent of the known intrusion, along with good advice to monitor activity just in case.

I don't really see what the problem there is.

EAs DLM service (Origin v0.9) was hacked, and because their forum credentials are the same as their service credentials (Steams aren't) meant every user was legitimately at risk.
Luckily nobody at that time bought anything through DLM because it didn't let you reinstall remotely and you had to save the installer or lose your purchase, so almost nobody was affected.

I'm outraged that it costs $60 in the first place.

That's the Aussie Tax for you. The regular edition is cheaper here for reasons I'm sure R* isn't even aware of.

It was poor form not to send out the notice to the e-mail addresses tied to Steam accounts. I can't be the only one who tends to ignore the updates/news pop-up windows.

Completely fine over here (in Canada):

Hell, I've already beaten L.A. Noire (without DLC) on PS3 and this is pretty tempting. I'm assuming that Valve ended up sorting out the issue with the sale.

Please stop comparing EA to Valve/Origin to Steam in these cases, one has a stellar record, the other is the worst company in the USA. Doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure why people are willing to cut one a break and lynch mob the other.

lol what, you mean is more popular because ppl play farmville???

im not sure that even fifa releases on pc anymore

FIFA does release on PC, and I'm not sure what you're saying about Farmville but you're right in that Steam rejuvenated the PC gaming market in the past 7 or 8 years although it certainly isn't the be-all-and-end-all.

I could list all the companies having great sales on PC without Steam but eh, list threads.

say whatever you like. try to remember a couple years ago.
Sure, I'll try. 3 years go? I was playing games on PC. 6 years ago? I was playing games on PC. 9, 12, 15 years ago? I was playing games on PC.

pc gaming=steam.
gaming pc = steam.

Repeating the same statement multiple times and bringing up an entirely unrelated factoid? You have truly mastered the fine art of the argument.

Let me guess, you are a teenager in the USA.

why are people so mean to ea?
lBgSo.gif

they just want to make videogames. i'm so happy that i'm getting to play battlefield 4 beta for the low price of $70.

it is valve who are the doo-doo heads of the gaming industry. their sales devalue the gaming industry, it is because of them the AAA gaming market is dying.

i however am a ea fan, and i will happily pay $70 for a videogame i have played 5 times before.

And you sound like a desperate Valve fan.

And some people are still playing their Atari, doesn't mean it's going strong.

PC Gaming was in a massive recession, Steam helped turn it around.

Yeah, I completely agree. Seeing the same posters repeatedly trying to shit on threads with fanboy and double standard accusations tends to get old real quick and it's ironically much worse and even getting more prominent than what they are trying to combat. The majority of these posts being stupid oneliners isn't helping either.

If EA did this, people would be losing their shit right about now..

That's highly disputable.

And even if it did happen it'd only be a reflection of the esteem each company is held. This is like when a third party complains about Nintendo having an unfair advantage because they went to the trouble of spending decades cultivating a loyal customer base.

If Valve/Steam gets away with it it's because they've spent the time to build a good consumer image, unlike EA.

The people actually getting offended because something non-positive is being said about Valve aren't really any better. In honesty, the fact is that this is an issue, but it's one that doesn't deserve a high amount of vitriol - no matter who does it. Contacting Valve to let them know about it is a good first step. Everybody makes mistakes, and it's rarely wise to assume the worst in any situation. If Valve were informed and then chose not to do anything about it, well, that might be another story.

In short, people making this about Valve vs. anybody else are dumb. And people who are acting like nothing should be done about this because it's "not hurting anybody" are also dumb. It IS an inaccurate reflection of the sale, and thus it should be corrected.

You're getting ridiculous.

you are ridiculous unless you are 3 years old.

-most of pc genres dying and being a niche(4x,space,sim,strategy,management etc etc)

-even fps are console first, leftovers pc(you can get exclusives like hard reset! years ago it was a joke that consoles could even have fps....)

-due to this console cycle being longer pc managed to get a bit of attention now in the end.
if xbox next and ps4 were releasing now with wiiu, tell me a gaming site/magazine or forum that would bother with pc gaming you logical person.....
not to mention publishers.

-and if valve didnt made steam and unified and simplify pc gaming years ago,it would be cluttered mess with some indie games.you would have facebook ofcourse.

-btw i think madden doesn't even get released on pc now that the pc is "better than ever."

steam = pc gaming.
next year all the hype is going to the next consoles, their new ips etc...
the pc platfrom with most users will still be steam. and they deserve to be.

Exactly! I find it really odd people are actually getting angry or bitter over this and feel like they need to bring this up in every single thread. If consumers are happy with you - and people around here are happy with Valve for very good reasons - they are probably willing to cut you some slack.

Soooooooooooo is anyone going to call Valve and see if they will give us all they GOTY edition for the Vanilla price? If so I want in. I can't make the call though as I am in a nation other than the US.

if anyone other than Valve did this people would be calling for their heads.

Depends, would said "others" actually show the game prior to transaction or after transaction? The reason why EA got slapped was because it was the latter, this one is just a very minor mistake which has been rectified.
