Rest here.

Also, Atlus has an official teaser site here.

I love you Atlus.

As an aside, what does Yggdrasil mean in Japanese and why is it used so much for such an awkward word?

The great ash tree that holds together earth, heaven, and hell by its roots and branches in Norse mythology.

That actually looks pretty decent. What exactly do you do in the game?

It's a dungeon-based RPG. You trawl through big, maze-like dungeons, fighting monsters and collecting treasure.

I like RE games, but not YOU! :P
Once the World Cup is over and I change my avatar (July 10th if Portugal doesn't win, 31st if they do) you'll like me again.

How could you not like Rune Factory?! You can ship Buffamo milk. Buffamo m.i.l.k. I want to go milk my Buffamo right NOW!

I'm not really a JRPG fan, besides Phantasy Star Online that is, but I WILL say that the game looks gorgeous, it's like a painting even...

And the milking bit sounds tempting too...

Yggdrasil Labyrinth is reminding me a ton of Shining the Holy Ark, which was one of my favorite Saturn games (and one you liked quite a bit, too, if I recall correctly). I am absolutely loving the look of it... it's like Shining the Holy Ark fused with a bit of Riviera-style artwork and stunningly gorgeous backgrounds.

It's very close to the top of my Most Wanted DS Games list at this point. Hurrrrrry uppppp, pleeeeeease Atlus.

Ooh, good point -- I can seem the similarities to StHA now that you mention it. And, yeah, StHA is a favorite for me as well, though I'm gobsmacked that anyone would actually bother to remember this about me ;) :)

Hahah. Well, what can I say -- I remember almost everything I read, even minor comments made by fellow forumers in threads months, months back.

And yeah, it reminds me a lot of Shining the Holy Ark in a number of respects... first person in the field, first person traditional turn-based Dragon Quest-style battles, huge explorable dungeons where you need to constantly check a map to see where you're going... it's definitely right up my alley.

The game's map interface seems leaps ahead, though (look at all the different stuff they've got on there) and it looks like there are a lot of different commands in battle. Great character/monster artwork and gorgeous backgrounds, too. And Koshiro music?

I'm interested in learning more, but I can absolutely say that I'm very, very much anticipating this game at this point.

I dunno if anyone has noted, but the director of Yggdrasil Labyrinth directed Trauma Center too.

Oh, now that is very interesting. Trauma Center is a fantastic game. So... in other words, Yggdrasil's going to be hard as ****. Excellent. :D

Do you know what other games the guy has directed? Any other RPGs?

This week's famitsu is also the final issue in the 20th anniversary collection. If you put the 5 covers together, they make a giant collage of different gaming characters. Did anyone besides me collect all 5?

Yggdrasil Labyrinth (NDS)

First up this week, Famitsu has a scoop on the upcoming Atlus dungeon crawler for the Nintendo DS titled Yggdrasil Labyrinth. The game was showcased behind closed doors at Atlus' booth during E3 earlier this year, but as it had not been officially announced at that time, coverage was quickly embargoed by the company. With little information to go on and no media at all, Atlus fans were left wondering what the game could be. Now finally the game is officially revealed, and it doesn't look disappointing in the least.

Yggdrasil Labyrinth is a 3D dungeon crawler with a first person view, much like the classic Eye of the Beholder series. The game's planning design and directing duties are being handled by Kazuya Niinou, who previously directed Atlus' offbeat sci-fi driven medical surgery game Trauma Center: Under the Knife. Switching from an action medical game to a slower paced dungeon crawler doesn't seem to faze him at all though, and the game is looking to be a real winner for fans of the genre.

Like any good dungeon crawler, the game features a character creation system where the player creates a character from a total of nine different classes. The character's growth will be managed via a point systems to boost statistics as the character levels up. The game uses a party system as well, so up to five characters can venture into the dungeons together at a time. The player is allowed to create a total of twenty different characters to use as he sees fit. The theme of the gameplay is said to be "immersion" as you go deeper into the dungeons and reap the rewards. To this end, the game utilizes both DS screens with a user-friendly map on the touch screen which can be managed and edited by the player to his own preference.

Another interesting system revealed is the f.o.e. system. There are extremely strong enemies that roam the dungeons known as f.o.e. They are not limited to one per floor, and they move as the player moves, step by step. They will react and engage the player's party based on sight or sound, and the longer you spend on a floor in the dungeon, the higher the chance of being engaged by a f.o.e. I suppose the intention is to keep the player on his toes and to bring back the tension of good old dungeon crawlers.

Aiding the development of the game is what Kazuya calls his "best choice" of main staff. In charge of the story and worldview design is Shigeo Kobayashi, scenario writer of Devil Summoner PS2 and Princess Crown. The character designer is Yuuji Himukai, who handles the character designs and illustrations for the Japanese novel series The Yoshinaga Family Gargoyle. The monster designs are being illustrated by Shin Nagasawa, a freelance artist who previously handled monster designs for Bahamut Lagoon as well as Final Fantasy IX at Squaresoft. Finally taking charge of the musical score of the game will be famed composer Yuzo Koshiro, of Streets of Rage and Ys fame.

Currently Yggdrasil Labyrinth is only 60% complete, and scheduled for a Fall 2006 release in Japan. As the game was showcased in E3 behind closed doors, it can be safely assumed that Atlus USA has every intention of bringing this over to western shores as well

Sounds very interesting.

Holy crockpockery. I thought it was for GBA, or was that the Turn Based Strategy one? This looks rather lovely. And knowing Atlus = :D

I don't have a DS Lite yet. Or I would probably have tried it out. I'm surprised no one else bought Magical Vacation 2 here either. Although that might explain the sales! :lol

Yeah, i've been wanting some impressions about it, the game looks really nice, i guess we'll probaby have to wait till the US release to get impressions about it. :lol

For anyone curious, I took some photos of the full collection of 20th anniversary Famitsu books, showing off the entire collage that is drawn across all five issues. Those in the US might not know this, but Famitsu has had a simple staple spine for most of its issues, but for the 20th anniversary, they used a proper spine. The result is pretty cool.

I thought about picking it up, but with Rockman ZX, replays of NSMB, King of Fighters XI, and Persona 3, I don't have enough time, let alone money.

I noticed the spine thing too, but it's disappointing that they bothered to bind it properly but NOT align the covers properly. >_<

God, that part pissed me the hell off. I have to overlap the covers to get the proper collage. :|
