They had him in two (supposed to be) high profile fighting games in PSABR and Street Fighter X Tekken and people still know pretty much nothing about him. I don't think the west really cares.

With the continuing festivities of PlayStation's 20th, this weeks famitsu asked their readers what games and characters are closely related to the PS Brand.
I'll just list out the top 5 since it's probably a expected list coming from Japan

Games
1) FFVII

Characters
3) Cloud

I'd say this should provide sufficient reason for Sony to help pay for that must-requested FFVII remake. If only...

I tried to think of the top three characters I associate with the PS brand:

1) Cloud
2) Spyro
3) Crash

When I realized everyone who I thought of was 3rd party the first character that is Sony owned that popped into my head was Kratos..

It makes me think that Sony desperately needs a first party character to associate themselves with. Nintendo has Mario, Microsoft has Master Chief, and Sony has well...Toro?

on the bright(?) side Sony has been making efforts to dev and/ or market MH clones hoping to have a successor to MH on PS. Freedom wars, God eater, toukiden, soul sacrifice etc. yadda yadda

There isn't really a bright side to that. There isn't going to be a Vita successor and those games will most likely not find a sizeable audience on home consoles. Basically, the Sony published titles are dead IPs walking while Toukiden and God Eater will go to 4DS or iOS. Instead of buying Monster Hunter and ensuring Vita some level of success, they invested in dead end IPs.
