I say this at every possible opportunity, but GAF heavily overrates how well Super Metroid has aged. I'm not sure I'd even rank in the top 5 Metroid games.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is the best Metroid game. What the...
Ok why are your top five Metroid games then. Unless 1 through 5 are all Metroid Pime I dont see it

These are actually really agreeable scores, aside from MMX (way too low) and F-Zero (a bit too high). I'm surprised by how little I can complain about the ordered list. Nowadays, I treat Famitsu scores as more or less entirely nonsense, but it seems like they might have been fairly reliable once upon a time.
SSFII is the best SFII version on SNES. Hyper Fighting was garbage and terribly unbalanced.100% agree, vanilla Super is by far the worst of the five Street Fighter II games. It was such a step back from Hyper Fighting, which essentially perfected the CPS-1 Street Fighter formula.
Nonsense. The New Challengers has 4 turbo stars, same as Hyper Fighting without the cheat code. The 10 star speed in HF is ridiculous and takes all strategy and character speed nuances out of the game. It basically makes it a button masher worse than Tekken ever was.For one, Super is slow as hell, which is inexcusable after how fast and fluid Hyper Fighting feels.
You forgot Ken's fierce DP which covers half the screen and completely destroys everyone's airgame. HF was an unbalanced mess and all those nerfs were necessary to get some actual balance.Second, almost every character balance was actually a step *backwards* that made them worse than their Hyper Fighting incarnations. A small sample:
- Perhaps the biggest crime was Zangief, who lost the low invincibility on his 3K Lariat.
- Blanka got nerfed, his vertical rolling ball no longer hit on the way down as it used to in Hyper Fighting
- Boxer lost the ability to go through projectiles with 3P/3K move.
- Guile got punked, he sucks ass in Super
Exactly.Back then they actually used to score games instead of 36-40ing big games from big publishers, huh?
Why is 26/40 a bad score? Its basically 65/100, a fair score if I say so.
Ghouls and Ghosts is never a 6
F-Zero: 10/8/9/10
Super Ghosts and Ghouls: 7/7/7/6
Mega Man X: 7/6/6/7
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past: 9/10/10/10
Super Street Fighter II: 8/8/7/7
Kirby Super Star: 9/8/7/8
Damn. Nothing against F-Zero, but that's pretty high for a racing game.
Is there a limit to how well a racing game can score?
I agree with LttP getting a 9 and SMW an 8.
It's interesting that many contemporary reviews of Super Metroid were 'very good' and it was only over time that eventually it was realised how momentous an achievement of game design it was.Super Metroid: 8/8/8/8
I love MMX, but it really seems like one of those games that never got 9s and 10s.
Another fairly low score considering how popular and influential it was.

Yikes at that Star Fox score, guess it's something you had to be around for...
Yoshi's Island is better than the first Mario World.
