Hey there,

Welcome to the Fatal Frame Community thread. This thread has been created to discuss everything surrounding the Fatal Frame main game series and its various spin-offs.

3) More to come.....

What is Fatal Frame
Fatal Frame is a survival horror series created by Tecmo. Each game has you take control of a young female protagonist and explore various abandoned villages, houses and ruins. These areas contain a number of different evil spirits that will attack you and try to take your life. Unlike other horror games that give you a vast amount of weaponry, Fatal Frame only offers you a camera to fend off your foes. Capture spirits, figure out the mysterious story and try to escape the horrific nightmare. Fatal Frame is the ultimate horror experience.

Fatal Frame 1
After having received almost no news about her brother Mafuyu for over a week, Miku Hinasaki goes to the defunct Himuro Mansion to search for him. The only trace she finds of him is their mother's old Camera Obscura, which Mafuyu brought with him. Upon realizing that she is now trapped in the mansion, Miku continues searching for her brother, and a way out.

Fatal Frame 2

Twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura are visiting a childhood play spot, when Mayu follows a mysterious crimson butterfly deep into the forest. Concerned for her twin, Mio follows Mayu, and the two find themselves at a lost village. When they reach the village, they notice that the path they took to this mysterious place has vanished. Mio must uncover the mystery behind the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, while chasing her sister, who is becoming increasingly possessed by the evil spirit of Sae

Fatal Frame 3
While on an assignment taking pictures at a derelict mansion, Rei Kurosawa, a 23-year-old freelance photographer, inexplicably captures the image of her deceased fiancé, Yuu Asou, in a photograph. Afterwards, Rei begins having recurring nightmares of an old Japanese manor during a heavy snowfall, and observes Yuu entering the house. She follows him into the house, where the dream becomes a nightmare

Fatal Frame 4

In 1970, five girls were kidnapped by Yō Haibara, a suspected serial killer, from their rooms in a mysterious sanatorium on Rougetsu Island. They were eventually rescued by Chōshirō Kirishima, a detective pursuing the criminal, but all five girls lost their memories in the process. Ten years later, two of the girls, Marie Shinomiya and Tomoe Nanamura, died mysteriously. Fearing the same fate, the three remaining girls, Ruka Minazuki, Misaki Asō and Madoka Tsukimori, all now 17 years old, return to the island to recover their lost memories and learn the truth about the events that occurred 10 years ago

Fatal Frame 5
The fifth installment of the Fatal Frame series was announced on April 21, 2014, and will be a Wii U exclusive. The game is one of four parts of a project planned by Tecmo Koei and Nintendo, which also includes a live-action movie, a manga, and a novel that is due out in August.[19] The game was informally titled Fatal Frame V: The Black-Haired Shrine Maiden outside of Japan.

One of the best horror game series, enjoyed 2 probably the best out of the series but they have all been pretty solid efforts. Keeping my fingers crossed we might see 5 in the states.

Subbed like a mofo.

I'm still peeved with Nintendo for not giving us an English version of FF4. Would be nice if they put just a subbed version up on the store.

The third one is still my favorite. Controversial opinion, I know, but I remember just playing most of it in one go on an afternoon, and felt quite a sense of accomplishment upon finishing it.

Awesome! Love this series a lot though I wish I could say that I've played more than just all of Crimson Butterfly and a few minutes of the first. I've been looking to fix that recently though.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Surprised this wasent a community already, I may need to recheck the OP again but I think you forgot to mention the remake of FF2 for wii and also the spirit camera spinoff game for 3DS

Yeah, i still need to add those. I never did finish the remake. I got stuck halfway through.

I found Spirit Camera almost impossible to play.

I have yet to play a single Fatal Frame game, but that will be changing next month as I plan on playing Fatal Frame 2 next month as part of the Gaf Plays.....31 Nights of Halloween Horror thread (I would definitely be interested in hearing/reading some tips for first time players)....I might also play/buy 1 and 3, but I want to experience 2 first cause I honestly have no idea if I'm gonna love or hate the other games.

Cool thread, I was meaning to replay and actually finish Fatal Frame 1. Really really really hope we get FF5 in the West. Not like Nintendo can afford to ignore smaller titles this gen.

Subbed.

I immensely enjoy Fatal Frame, have and completed all of them, including 4. I remember buying the Japanese 4 without a clue how i was going to play it, then the translationc ame about, was a glorious day.

All amazing games, but i think 3 edges it out just barely as my favorite in the series.

I already said this, but the moment they announce a western release for Fatal Frame 5 I'll get a Wii U.

Also, we can't have a Fatal Frame community thread without appreciating Tsukiko Amano's contribution to the series.
My favourite song of her's is Fatal Frame III's ending theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dg5zM6sJXOk

I've only recently gotten into this series, thanks to the two Wii games. They were both lovely though and great horror games. Here's hoping Nintendo localizes the 5th entry in a timely fashion.

What's really unique to Fatal Frame, is that the gameplay is actually good. The character movement is a bit slow and you're mostly just running around picking up items, like other horror games. But camera combat is fun. You're not swinging a pipe around in a clumsy fashion, but you're actually moving around, trying to line up a good shot and even performing combos. And at the same time, it remains fairly scary due to the restricted view, the close-combat nature and the small battle areas.

Played all of the FF available in N.A. but never finished one...I always get stuck either not knowing where to go or do or stuck at a puzzle or hard section and just move on...I love the series and all though, just cant finish them.

Played 1 and 2 for the first time last year, and they were great.

Going to play 3 and 4 next month as my Halloween games. Hopefully 5 finds a way over to NA.

FF3_Cover.jpg

I wonder if this series will ever return to its Playstation roots.
Yes, the Tormented does have an absolutely gorgeous cover. There's a lot of beauty and sadness in that game. If the dominant sensation of FF2 is blood red, the dominant sensation of FF3 is funereal blue.

nice op. best horror series i've ever played. so glad that the ps2 trilogy is on the store...

accept no substitutes: this series will scare you like no other :) ...

Nintendo should go all out and release IV as well.
Just sub the damned thing, no need to dub.

That's not the main problem. The game actually had some serious bugs. For instance there's no way to actually complete the ghost index. Even the fan translation patch fixed this by basically making the index it say that it was complete when it wasn't.

It wound be helpful if you outlined the differences between the PS2/XBOX/Wii ports.

From what I understand the Xbox ports were superior and the Wii version both cut and added content to Fatal Frame II.

Fatal Frame character models have always been really beautiful. Nice to see the new game is no exception in that department.

I mean... just look at her...

Consistently good female protagonists too. Was an interesting aspect of the series to me in the PS2 era, I mean heck we still don't exactly have tons of those. They also do the "every(wo)man" very well, much like Silent Hill. Resident Evil's characters started out as having military-ish training for the most part and now they're completely ridiculous roidrage monsters since RE5.

You feel a weakness in FF, that camera is the ONLY reason your ass is alive. Even Silent Hill you can feel a bit invincible since all you need is a steel pipe to beat most things up and a couple shotgun shells in reserve is enough for much of the rest.

Really a shame the series never made it to the PC, looks very interesting. Currently I'm playing the Silent Hill franchise for the first time, and I love it. I'm sure FF would be right up my alley...

Chou is my 2nd fav, but in general Fatal Frame 2 was the best entry in the series imo.

It's really sad how IV never got localized, and the remake of II never released in NA. The series deserves better than this kind of treatment.

I assume the OT isn't supposed to just cut off mid sentence on FF2's description?

becoming increasingly possessed by the evil spirit of Sa
Presumably that was Sae Kurosawa, with whatever else you intended to put afterwards.

I enjoyed deep crimson butterfly somewhat, but I never really felt scared despite doing the whole play at night/curtains shut/etc thing. I dunno, I feel like I'm missing out since I never really find it scary since I have a weapon that lets me defeat most any ghost I come across.

Seems like a good thread to sub to since I'm planning on starting my first proper playthrough of PZ2Wii and Zero 4 soon-ish! Hype!

Loved, LOVED Fatal Frame 1&2. Own 3 but haven't played it, and I don't think 4 ever made it stateside. Should I play FF3?
I still get a little paranoid to this day after playing some fatal frame. P.T also gave me a similar experience
Haha, I remember I had to play GTA3 (at the time) after playing Fatal Frame so I could go to sleep. Oh boy. The mamories.

Is the new Fatal Frame indicative of the other four? I had planned on doing a Fatal Frame marathon this October, but if they are like that, they're clearly not for me.

"Indicative" how? It's not even out yet, and the Wii U gamepad gameplay is of course a bit different to the control of the camera in the PS2 games. Not sure what you mean "like that". If you mean there are ghosts and it's a horror game and you take pictures to defeat them...yes?

Stuff like this.

The interviewer brings up how the clothes go seethrough when they get wet. Shibata laughs, because it's something he wanted to do. Kikuchi says their clothes were designed to make them look sexy when wet. Their normally floaty clothes, says Ozawa, get stuck to them, and Shibata says that there's a wet scene in the very intro, so look out for it. They also spent a lot of time thinking about how water drips when they stand up, for example from the collarbone to the chest. Ozawa jokes that Shibata spent a lot of time thinking about collarbones for this game.

If that's indicative of the way the series treats it's characters, then I won't play them.

Edit: Another "great" quote.

They spent a lot of time adjusting things like the wobble of her chest.

I played through the first one on Xbox and loved it. Genuinely really creepy, amazing sound design.

I also think the Camera Obscura is a great solution to shitty combat in horror games (like RE pre-4 and Silent Hill.) It's still fun and quick paced like a normal game, yet still scary...actually, way freakier than RE or SH.

was gonna do a Riddick playthrough, now I'm wondering if I should abandon that for this.

Stuff like this.

nah. First game is fully clothed, normal japanese woman. Second game has some fully clothed twins. Not sure about the third, but there's no panty shots that I recall and that kinda sucks they're bringing the fan service to this series.

What exactly do you mean by that? Fatal Frame has always had beautifully rendered female leads, but it has never treated them exploitatively.

I guess that's new to the Wii U one then.

Blame Team Ninja, but aside from wet clothes I still haven't seen much evidence of this impacting the game, and the ghosts still look horrific. Don't appreciate the Dead Or Alive girl being in the game, but it doesn't yet appear it's going to be a sexyfun romp around, just a horror game with lots of water and an unfortunate crossover character.
