Shameless plug: Watch it on Crunchyroll 'cuz I'm translating :)

http://www.crunchyroll.com/fate-zero

Knowing in advance that it's going to be a 2 season (~26 episode) show I can appreciate them taking the time to build up the backstory and set the stage with the first couple episodes, but goddamn if I don't cringe whenever the scene shifts to Kirei and/or Tokiomi. Their characters right now are like black holes of charisma and it feels like a chore listening to them talk.

Looking forward to some Saber on Lancer action when I start on episode 4 though!

Why would I wait a week to watch it, when I can watch it right after it airs in Japan on Niconico?

Holy shit. Hating on Jouji Nakata? Now I know not to listen to you! :D

Episode 1 was a chore to get through, but I'm glad I did since this took a turn for the much better after that.
I'm very glad to hear that. I've only watched ep 1 so far, and I was afraid the whole series would turn out kind of like some Kara no Kyoukai episodes that featured 57 minutes of talking and 3 minutes of dramatic looking but unexplained action.

Wasn't Fate/Stay Night an eroge? I knew this guy at my work who always played eroge and dating sims, he looked like one of those guys in the "Japan" memes who'd fondle the pillows and so forth. Hilarious times man lol
Technically yes, but it's a small part of the series that can be skipped and ignored entirely. Dismissing F/SN because of that stuff is like dismissing God of War because of its sex minigame.

What a surprise, I don't like F/SN or God of War! They're both dumb!

Watched the first 3. Really enjoying it. Wasn't a big fan of Nite, but I think removing the whiny lead, and throwing out the useless female side characters improved it.

That's fine, but thinking "I think this series is dumb" is different from "This series has gratuitous sex, so therefore I think it is dumb" :P

Well to be honest the visual novel has the most annoying protagonist I've ever witnessed. The sex isn't even the worst part about it...

I'm really interested in this series since I never got to read the light novel and the fate universe really interest me. (and it's the only reason I kept going on with the game)

Huh.

Even though I'm not particularly interested in the Fate/Stay universe [admittedly the mollusk/mana transfer/cg dragon thing hasn't helped my perception] but it sounds like it could be enjoyable for someone like me.

I guess I'll check it out.

Episode 4 was gorgeous, the battle choreographers must be praised for their attention to bringing the high action and intensity.

A shame Waver was just left to being a spectator but was hilarious, arriving in the middle of the two fighters was good. Though Im concerned of the entire thing with Assassin's, if he is still living how in the world can his master stay in the safety neutral zone, something is wrong.

It's because the Church is conspiring with Tokiomi and Kotomine. Remember that Kotomine's father is the church supervisor.

Right now Kiritsugu is the only one who has seen Assassin. If he makes a formal complaint about Kotomine, then he would be directly exposing his involvement, which would ruin his plan to use Irisviel as his proxy.

I can't get enough. Holy shit was Episode 4 fantastic. THE ANIMATION! THE ART! THE MUSIC! THE OVERALL FUN FACTOR!

Jesus Christ more anime should be like this. Damn so good.

Caught up to Ep 4 and I'm really liking this so far. Good action and animation, and Rider is hilarious.

This is true. I was thinking about why I'm enjoying this more than F/SN, and I realized it's probably because the FSN main character isn't here. So it's a proper war with the main characters doing their damn jobs instead of constantly trying to keep some dumbass from getting himself killed.

Honestly, I liked episode 1 the best so far. No joke. I love how it took everything so seriously, and it was all DUDES like GANGSTERS talking to each other and about each other, and it was all moody and awesome and gritty. Ep2-3 were really nice too because they did a great job of building tension. Ep4 had really nice action animation, and was generally exciting with maybe a bit too much combat exposition making it rather comical towards the latter half of the episode.

Ep5 was just straight animu though. It seems on a lower standard compared to the other episodes because it's just so much less "serious" in execution, and instead directed like a normal action anime. It was definitely still entertaining, but there are so many "LOL ANIME" moments that it made me lose a bit of respect for the overall production of the show! Hopefully this is just a misstep, and they were finding their footing in terms of how to handle the more complex fight set ups in the scenario. I expect that next week they're go back to having low action count and more brooding drama.

Don't fail me now ufotable! :D

Good episode, and this completes the first novel volume for Fate/Zero. Berserker being CG was a bit of a surprise but not as bad as I feared when he first showed up.

Iskander's still awesome.

And Caster's having a bit of mistaken identity. Wonder if they'll have any animation shown to show who he's thinking about, considering she had a design and was to be a character for another Fate game that didn't get off the ground.

In fact I'd imagine it would be even more enjoyable if you didn't watch fate/stay night.

Not for me. I like the fact that I know Gilgamesh and his powers... and yet the characters in Zero have no idea who he is. Delicious!

If you mention anything about Fate/Stay Night in this thread, you will be ejected forever.

Yet. I'm just saying! :D

My lips are sealed, don't worry.

I must say this though. as much as I enjoyed FSN, I think the Servants in Zero are far better. Episode 5 of Zero is a true testament to that. So far Zero trumps FSN in every way.

I don't really think there's anything wrong with how ep.5 was handled. Particularly after all the build up, episode 5 worked as a good pressure release. It helps that everything actually looks nice, even CG Berserker looked good. My hope is though that the show doesn't get too action heavy going forward. It's nice to have a good break in between all the drama and plot, but I want there to be a good balance between these sorts of episodes and episodes like the first 3

On a related note, there is a certain level of cheesiness to the way all the servants act during their battles, however I think it fits rather well considering their personalities and backgrounds. I suppose a bit difficult to avoid when you have characters like Iskander and Gilgamesh who are pretty over the top. Sometimes exposition during combat can be annoying, but I find it a bit enjoyable in this case because it's rather cool to see well known historical/mythical figures to interact. It helps that the dialouge itself isn't stupid bullshit that plagues some anime. Granted it doesn't help the show feel very serious, but I can enjoy the wordiness during battle regardless. Ideally the human drama and interactions can continue to provide the more serious and tense atmosphere that was present in episodes like 2-3.

I don't have any problems with how ep5 was handled because the actual adaptation seems to be pretty well done. The direction and animation is great, and it certainly isn't the weak link. What I'm somewhat disappointed by is probably what was originally in the source material in the first place. I didn't really want this particular conflict to resolve in this way, because it is pretty typical and relies on several generic crutches in terms of setting up certain scenes. It's all done in a much less restrained and deliberate way compared with the first 4 episodes.

My issue is that when each of the Servants are separately portrayed with their Masters, there is a good balance in terms of drama and also how believable it is. When paired against each other, it becomes much more like a typical anime or videogame, and loses some of the unique qualities the show has. This is fine for action sequences, especially when they're supposed to be cool and exciting instead of dramatic and classy, but I just hope it's not something that is too frequent.

I've never seen any of the other series under this name. I just watched ep1 for this one, looks amazing and very interesting. Am I doing it right or should I watch some of the others first?

You are doing it right. Just enjoy the series for what it is.

Sakura is
Rin's sister
?

Whelp I guess I shouldn't have entered this topic, since I haven't finished the original game.

Yeah, Fate/Zero spoils a bunch of stuff from Heaven's Feel. All of the stuff with the Matous in this works better if you've played through the VN first.

Episode 5

Aw poor Waver. Episode had some quality moments with
Gilgamesh and Berserker, kind of mind blowing fighting Waver professor guy wasted his command seal though. Berserker seems the weakest if it can be defeated just by running it over with the horse drawn carriage
