Favorite 8-bit ARCADE game?

Nnwwe.png

You now have the theme song stuck in your head. The sped up version.

Holy crap I was just thinking about this game. Made going to the laundromat much more pleasant.

It was an amazing game, so much depth.

It was being able to move the apples that opened it all up from Dig Dug. That first level there you shoved one of the apples to the left and then one above to the right. But not so far that they would drop.

That would trap all the monsters in the middle in one go, until they decided to change into ones that could dig. I fucking loved Mr. Do! :D

...given that:
The Motorola 6809 is an 8-bit (with some 16-bit features) microprocessor...

...the significant enhancements introduced in the 6809 were the use of two 8-bit accumulators (A and B, which could be combined into a single 16-bit register, D), two 16-bit index registers (X, Y) and two 16-bit stack pointers.

I forget the name of it..but you play as some acrobatic turkish looking guy, who can breathe fire? and fly?

it was a sidescroller.

I played the original in the arcades back in the day, and even now it is still my favourite arcade game ever.

Another favorite, Xain'D Sleena, better known as Solar Warrior.

I'll admit I didn't check to see if it was actually an 8-bit game or a 16-bit game, I'm just going off of memory.

^^Awesome game. I prefect balance of horinzontal shooter, platformer and schmup. Really hard in its day.

Great game! I'm wondering if Robotron is the first ever twin-stick shooter.

It was. There's an interview with Eugene Jarvis on the PSone version of Williams Arcades Greatest Hits and during development he broke his arm and couldn't play properly. So instead of buttons he had the idea of the twin stick.

The stories of his early days at Williams are awesome, the Defender one is amazing.

On with my favs.

Robotron, as mentioned above. I was crap at it, but I loved the gameplay and the sounds. Ooohhhh Williams, your arcade sounds.

My first real fav, one I always went back to trying to progress..... Ghosts n Goblins.

Then a few years later I stumbled across this gem. If there was one arcade game I truly felt like I had mastered it was Rygar.

It took me over 6 months to complete that. Skating up to the local shop where the machine was located and playing one credit a day. The first week or two felt like a waste of time but I was slowly getting better. Finding heaps of hidden bonuses and free men, I learnt how to skip the intro (Up and Start I think, it's hazy now). The day I finished that was a true sense of achievement. By the time I stopped playing I could finish the entire game without losing a man.

And last but not least..... Solomons Key.

Never played this as much as I would've liked as I only ever found this game at one location in our city but it oozed replayability, going for those scores, finding the hidden bonuses, bells, free men etc.

I could post tonnes more, I wasted so much money in the arcades it's not funny but I won't. I'll just smile and remember the feeling of finding 'that' game whenever new games arrived at the 'cades. Sup Gauntlet. *nods*

No trip to Barcade is complete without playing this obscure maze game:

Classic risk vs. reward gameplay... this game could totally do with a Mizuguchi style remix:

Man, Taito was the shit when it came to oldskool arcade games:

Favorite game from 1980 fer sure... love the riff that plays in the game:

Choplifter is possibly one of those games I played back in the day but I completely forgot about, so I have to thank OP to help me bringing back to surface some good old videogames' memories.

If you like Choplifter, I'd recommend checking out Rescue Raiders. It is a similar game but with resource management. You buy ground units and try to get a bomb into the enemies base.

"Duh, who turned the lights out?" I spent many a quarter at my local Round Table playing this game.

This is still one of my favorite games of all time, just based on nostalgia.

Back in the day when I couldn't even get magazines to preview new games: I just had to wait to see what appeared in stores. I saw this in the arcade and I couldn't believe it was real. The graphics were so fucking good that I thought it was FMV basically. LOL (I was like 8)

Then I encourage you to play Choplifter in MAME, It's really very fun and addicting, I love itl

There are also some other old nice picks in this thread!
I will have to amuse myself with MAME's retro goodness sometimes, if I have never put much effort in it so far it's because I fear I could feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of games and memoriesI may bump into and get lost in it.

I'm going to go with my childhood favorite Popeye.

Still enjoy it, but these days I'd lean more towards Time Pilot or Robotron 2084.

I got to play Galaga on an actual arcade cabinet, and it's my favorite space shooting game now in any form. It just feels so right.

Wizard of Wor is pretty cool too, and I've been wanting to play it again for awhile now. I got to check it out because a thrift store years ago had it on display.

I never played Joust in an arcade, but it's one of my most favorites as well.

It would indeed.

Same as the 68000 was a 16-bit processor with 32-bit features. Star Wars arcade was such an experience.
Not intending to start some bitness debate, but how would you define the 386sx and the 8088? /offtopic

Galaxian was the bee's knees.

Galaxian was the bee's knees.

Don't know much about them I'm afraid.

I liked Galaxian, but it was Galaga when they got it all right with capturing your ship and then retrieving it to double your fire. Must be one of the first games with weapon upgrades.

Spy Hunter was glorious, just had something about it. Very satisyfing, the pace was perfect and the change to get in the boat was a genius idea.

Wow, so many to mention:

Phoenix
Pleiads
Galaga
Gyruss - My favorite space shooter of all time
Joust
Popeye
Timber
Spy Hunter
Donkey Kong Jr.
Pac-Man
Xevious
Kangaroo
Star Wars

And I'm sure plenty others I've forgotten.

Bump for Pleiads...the unit in the snack bar where I used to play gave free credits if you jiggled the coin return. I got really good at Pleiads.

I liked the little bit where you were piloting the ship back home into the crosshairs. Was just a small thing, but for the time was certainly unique.
