Favorite example of a character holding back?

I haven't heard that. I read that he intentionally made him super strong (he actually called him a "joker" character), but knew he had to limit his involvement.

"Regret" might've been too strong a word on my part, but I think we're both referring to the same thing (if Wikipedia is to be believed).

Watsuki added that he wanted to use Hiko more often in Rurouni Kenshin, but Hiko is more powerful than Kenshin. Watsuki's editor stated, "(The Master) is like the joker in a card deck." Hiko is, in Watsuki's words, "just too powerful," and so it would be difficult to find a place to use him in the story.[38] Watsuki described Hiko as "the original RuroKen wildcard."[34]

Glad to see the Hiko love.

Kenshin also hold back due to the sword, in fact the only person who could manage him in his assassin form was Saito, in both eras.

The Rock Lee moment is sort of retroactively ruined by the fact that every higher-ranking adult ninja present at the time could have bitch-slapped him so hard his dick fell off, even the ones who don't really specialize in Taijutsu.

Then again, everything in Naruto is retroactively ruined by Naruto, if you follow it long enough.

That scene is ruined because a kid at the beginning of a battle shounen (a genre almost exclusively about young adults growing and eventually surpassing their elders) isn't as strong the higher-ranked adults in the room?

Guess its so fashionable to hate Naruto we can make up reasons to hate it now.

As for the topic. Gohan vs Perfect Cell. One-handed Kamehameha. Gohan holding back some of his power because he was worried about his blast hurting innocent people.

Wait, that’s the scorpion in the OP? There is a jaw or even in a face in that panel? My brain and my eyes are incapable of finding agreement when looking at that art...

Hiko was the muthafuckin' TRUTH. Nobody in that series had half a chance, he was operating on different rules than the Kenshin characters were. Remember how Kenshin flash stepped onto Sano's sword early in the series and that was supposed to be awesome that he was standing on it? This dude fought a guy (I use that term loosely) with an even bigger weapon, and he stabbed his sword through that guy's sword and clung to that shit upside-down like Spiderman.

They can't fuck with him.

Other than him, Saitama's an obvious choice.
Definitely.

The mangaka even stated that Hiko Seijuro is the "joker" character in the manga. He's unbeatable.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to.

Garp holding back against Akainu

This scene always bugged me. Dude helped capture Ace, and prevent others from having him escape, and he's angry that one of the main guys who wanted him dead actually goes ahead and kills him at his own *shock* execution?

In ROTJ, Luke has very clearly surpassed Vader and controls their encounter at every turn, yet he refuses to fully engage until Leia is threatened.
never took it that way. always figured with how luke was fighting he was going all out against Vade, then leia is threatened and he taps into the dark side which allows him to beat Vader. the aggressiveness of his actions always seemed to be luke embracing the dark side yet having the will power to stop before killing his father. which at that point he has surpassed his father resisting the dark side. I suppose you could view not using the dark side originally as him holding back, but i honestly dont know if he knew it would have powered him up so much.

Yasuri Shichika from Katanagatari is one of my favorites due to how it contributed to the finale.

11 episodes of the series, he arduously collects 11 Deviant Blades wielded by other people.

During final episode, Yasuri Shichika bossrushes that shit with a vicious bloodbath.

What changed?

Nobody is stopping him from using deadly force.
Shichika is allowed to break the Deviant Blades.
He doesn't have to protect his employer.
He doesn't have to protect his own life.

So complete kid gloves until now, and you don't really realize how handicapped he was in until this happens.

I'm not saying Luke didn't have the edge in the fight, but that's not what that scene was about at all. It was all about the Emperor showing Luke how powerful the dark side was. I don't think he was holding back much at all. Vader wasn't even fully engaged either.

The Swamp Thing is the earth elemental who has potentially unlimited strength and the ability to turn an organism's own flora against them.

Yet he seems to rarely flex those powers.
