Ah, Shields. Always eclipsed in acknowledgement and popularity by its offensive brother, the sword (Unless you're Captain America)

So let's talk about our favourite sheilds in gaming.

I'll start with one of the most iconic ones.

The Hylian Shield;

"A shield passed down through the Hyrulean royal family, along with the legend of the hero who wielded it. It's defensive capabilities and durability outshine all other shields."

From its great geometry to it's amazing pattern details on it, it truly is one of the best looking shields in gaming. The Master Sword gets most of the attention in Zelda games, but getting the Hylian Shield is also very high on many peoples list.

Perhaps one day the shield will be the key to saving the world

And probably my absolute favourite of all time, Purple Flame Shield (Demon's Souls)

The origin of it's characteristic design is unknown.
It's a weapon with many mysteries.

I've played thru most of Dark Souls 3 rocking a Shield of Want. It grants extra souls for kills and allows you to use your weapon art even when one-handed. For someone who is shit at parrying it is pretty great.

Interestingly, the Shield of Want is a time-worn version of the King's Shield from Dark Souls 2.

The best shield is the one you never use.

Mechanically, though, I like Mount and Blade shields best. Don't really use board and blade in many other games.

Easy to use and understand, but allows for much more interesting battles.

Ocarina of Time mirror shield - I can't think of any other on top of my head.

But the Twinrova battle with the ability to absorb 3 of her attacks, and the badass (I think, I like it very much) sound effect makes it great. Not to mention the sun light puzzles.

Very solid resistances (85 physical, 73.7 everything else), good stability and low weight, and on top of all that it looks swag as hell.

Unfortunately it sucks in Dark Souls 3.

It was the Artorias shield for quite some time, dat poise and stability.

Now its the Space Pirate Trainer shield.

Can transform back and forth into a Laserstaff or a shield, the shield sends out a shockwave that diverts laser shots from enemies. The laserstaff has the ability to block laser like a lightsaber and has a whip/lasso like ability, you can catch enemies and smash them to the ground.

The Elemental Shields from Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles/Sonic 3 and Knuckles come to mind (they're in the center)

They enhance Sonic's abilities in neat ways in addition to deflecting projectiles and absorbing 1 hit of damage...the Electric shield enables Sonic to double jump and protects against electric surfaces in Death Egg zone, the Fire shield enables Sonic to do an air-dash attack and shields against flames/firey surfaces, and the Water shield enables Sonic to do a ground bounce attack and enables Sonic to breathe underwater
