Favourite shields in gaming

What I love about the bubble shield is that it doesn't provide either player with any kind of power advantage, it's literally just a shield that anyone can use. That's something Halo 3 did very well with weapon balance, no weapon or ability flipped the tides of the game.

Halo Reach on the other hand..did it wrong.

The Aegis, from Destiny.

For those who don't recognize it, a Guardian forged this out of dead time-traveling robots, and infused it with his own magical life force (Light).

Within the Vault of Glass, an evil labyrinth where the same time-traveling robots are rewriting time and space, the Aegis breaks all of the rules they put in place, makes you invulnerable, and allows you to rewrite fate. Its baller.

Marauder Shields.

CTRL+F "Marauder", was not disappointed.

Toughest damn boss fight in the franchise history.

As for a shield shield? Toss up between the Bee from Borderlands or the Drangleic Shield simply because of that 100% physical block in the early game of Dark Souls 2. And it wasn't really easy to acquire either of these shields in their games. The Bee was just the roll of RNG and the one in DS2 had you beating the Pursuer, which if it was your first playthrough, was hard as hell.

When they added shields to Counter-Strike in 1.6, the amount of rage it caused was legendary. I remember someone planting the bomb in a convenient corner, where I could position the shield so as to protect me from all angles while defusing. I got banned from several servers merely for using it within the first few days of the patch. It was hilarious.

Royal Crest of Lordaeron - World of Warcraft

It's a great shield for Alliance characters, particularly Protection Paladins & Warriors.

Shield of Balduran +3 in Baldur's Gate II, it has 4 armor class but what makes it special is the ability to reflect that piece of shit spell from Beholder monsters which are difficult/frustrating to deal with otherwise. Drawback of -1 strength though.

Fuck Beholders.

Came in expecting Fromsoft and WoW shields and was not disappointed.

Most of my favorites have already been listed. Although I do have a fondness for the Draconian Deflector in WoW, simple and stylish and the way it reflected in the game was just cool.

Grass Crest Shield, all day, err day.

The one all of us paladins looked forward to getting from Blackwing Lair (World of Warcraft), the Red Dragonscale Protector:

Was VERY jealous of the resto shammies in the guild who got this one. I had Benediction, but yeah...

The Bulwark of Azzinoth from World of Warcraft. Nothing more than a slab of iron with spikes that even a Tauren could hide behind. So crude. I love it.

For some reason, this was nicknamed "The Car Door" by our guild. I don't know why.

I gotta say, I don't really like the Hylian shield, especially compared to the other shields in Breath of the Wild. It just doesn't look as cool as the royal shield, for example. Or the guardian shield++. Or the kite shield. Or the shields with animal designs.

I think my favorite in that game is the rusty shield (and all the rusty weapons, actually). It really sells the post-apocalyptic aesthetic of Breath of the Wild.

Frozen Pride from the Kingdom Hearts series

Made for an interesting boss fight against Vexen in CoM and KH2FM with its complete neutralization of frontal attacks. Then you get to keep it for yourself as a reward for defeating its owner.

I loved getting 2 or 3 folks from the opposing team to dive in on me then bust that out and just wreck 'em. Hopefully it returns in some form for Splatoon 2.

The Elemental Shields from Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles/Sonic 3 and Knuckles come to mind (they're in the center)

They enhance Sonic's abilities in neat ways in addition to deflecting projectiles and absorbing 1 hit of damage...the Electric shield enables Sonic to double jump and protects against electric surfaces in Death Egg zone, the Fire shield enables Sonic to do an air-dash attack and shields against flames/firey surfaces, and the Water shield enables Sonic to do a ground bounce attack and enables Sonic to breathe underwater

The electric shield also attracts rings. Looking forward to use the elemental shields again in Sonic Mania.

I always found this one more useful...
