Ever since i turned twenty in May, i got this feeling that i'm getting "old". On the night of my brother and i's birthday (fraternal twin), he said that we were going to be thirty in just ten years. Now i realize that i'm still very young, but i'm just surprised how "fast" it went. It being life. Looking back on what i've done so far with my life, i realize what little i've accomplished so far.

So has anyone, who is still young, ever felt like this before?

EDIT:

This thread is almost eight years old. I've changed since then. Here's an UPDATE (2015) if you're curious.

I'm almost there and I've accomplished little. But I don't know that such things matter. I assume like all I will find some willing mate in these final 2 years of University and we'll breed and pass on genes to our descendants who will then suffer some tragic fate.

Well ten years ago you were only ten so it's not that huge of a deal.

I feel this way right now. I also feel like the first 20 years of my life have been wasted.

I recently been diagnosed with depression and this pill makes me feel the way i've been striving to feel for months (I was trying to fight it naturally) after I lost my girlfriend and failed my second semester in college.

Feeling old at 20 sucks a lot worse when you realize if you just had one pill earlier in life, you could have done so many things differently.

I'm 20.
Whenever someone calls me old I tell them to go **** themselves. Because if I can high-kick them in the face then that makes me still young enough.

You'll learn a lot in your twenties, as well as how to deal with aging. Worry about that the other stuff before worrying about a number. Also, keep in good shape and you won't look much older when you're thirty (I'm only 26, but I look very young).

20? Bah! Imagine 25. I hate you.

Imagine? I live it. I'm starting to get a gut, takes like three cups of coffee to jumpstart my ass every morning and when I get home it takes all the energy I have left to plop on the couch, turn on the TV and get a pizza delivered. Sure I don't exercise, eat absolute garbage and don't sleep enough, but I'm going to choose to blame my age anyways.

20 is nothing. Most people consider the start of their really good years to be their late teens. You're only a couple years older. Once you're in the second half of your 20s and expected by everyone from parents and family and friends and society to settle down and start a career, and half the people your own age are getting married and buying a house, and you're no longer in that fantasy land called college, then you can start feeling old.

They say you're young even if you're in your early 30s these days, but really, that's bullshit. It's basically the definition of youth as not having teenage kids and a back problem. Real youth is when you have the life to really take advantage of it. That's college. You're still young young.

seriously, you're not even drinking age yet. That seems like an eternity ago for me, and I'm only almost 26.

I'm 27 and I just saw a picture of me when I was 20. God Dammit!

How do guys like Toby Mcguire look like 16 at 30? Tom Cruise is in his mid 40s, same for Brad Pitt. WTF!

Starting to get a gut!? I'm 24 and sporting the jolliest of paunches already.
I choose to blame age rather than lifestyle as well.

I'm pretty sure I posted this exact same thread when I hit 20/21 as well. Quarter life crisis perhaps?

You've got 6 years to enjoy your youth (20-25). Better enjoy life while you can now becauase it's all downhill after 25...

Same boat here. But if the OP wants to feel accomplished here's how.

Orson Welles was about 24 when he made Citizen Kane. So all you have to do is go to film school and come out with a movie that's even more groundbreaking and critically acclaimed at the age of 23. Then you can coast the rest of the way through life. easy peasy.

Based on your previous post about your concern about your brother losing his V-card at a brothel, I think you need to freaking get out and have some fun. You seem to obsess over crap that doesn't even matter. You are freaking 20 years old, you haven't even started to live yet.

Do you have many friends? Do you get out the house? Do you go out? Just seems you might need to get more input/influence in your life so that you won't sit around thinking about things like 'being old at 20' or 'my brother is going a brothel'. Enjoy life and try not to worry too much.

Yea, I had a mini freak-out when I turned 20 too... Stuff like remembering that I haven't worn roller skates since like 10 years ago, make you realize how old you are.

I kinda feel the same way. The inside of my body feels like its aging faster than the rest of me. Having carpal tunnel in both arms, sucks. I'm burnt out from work, have grey hairs, and...I should be enjoying life now. I'm making changes though. Going back to school soon, and whatnot. All that being said, while you mofos look like old men in your 40's, I'll still look 20 :P

Youth is wasted on the young only because every year people somehow manage to not understand that age is relative. A 20 y/o will envy and 18 year old, and a 25 y/o will envy the 20 y/o, a 30 y/o will envy the 25 y/o and on and on. Aging is about financial planning and increasingly frequent check-ups; pretty much everything else is nonsense.

Oh please, I'm sick of kids in their twenties complaining about feeling old. You don't know the half of it. Wait until you're my age.

I'm 24, the only day I haven't worked this month was the 4th, I'm killing myself to try and make over $50,000 this year and afford to throw away $1,800 a month on rent and bills (not including credit cards) while saving for a house in an exorbitantly expensive market. I don't feel old - I feel young and powerless, fighting with all his strength to come out ahead.

Well said. Whats in bold really puts things into perspective. I wouldn't drink anyway, but the point is thats something people signify as their ascension into adulthood.

These are some very wise words. You always want what you had while not appreciating what you have now.

I'm only 19 and I've been feeling like this the whole summer. :(

yeah well he's got one foot in the cremation oven. I don't care how much plastic poontang he gets, I'll never envy any old people.

Man life was wonderful when I was 20. I finally got laid and, in my youthful innocence, assumed it would then become a regular thing. Here I am 25 and astonished at how stupidly naive I was...

I think everyone in this thread already knows what I'm going to say... so instead I'll just insult the OP.

WTF man.. 20? F'n 20?!?!?!?! Grow a sack.

You feel old at 20? I turn 35 tomorrow. Age is all in your mind.

Now help me get off the couch. My back is killing me.

When I turned 24 in January I started having like a premature mid-life crisis or some shit. Thinking about my age now, and how I haven't accomplished as much in life by now as I think I should've, still depresses me from time to time, but you gotta think like this: "I'm older than I was, sure, but I'm still young." Because when you're 30, you're going to look back at when you were 20 and think "damn...what was I thinking? I was still a baby."

Instead of dwelling on your age, go out and enjoy your youth :)

I'm 44. That's my dad on the left, 64. When I was 20, I never felt old. For a while in my 30's, that feeling hit. But now, as then(@20), I'm to pre-occupied enjoying being alive, working toward goals, enjoying friends, etc., to fret about how long I've been around this planet.

I see it as a trade-off. I lost my hair, have some lines in my face, but I understand myself so much more, and have a fuller, more sophisticated view of others.

As to your sense of having not accomplished much yet. I think most people have dreams and goals and some kind of plan at your age (I had NO plan), but trust me, there is so much for you to yet discover; new people, unforeseen circumstances/challenges/opportunities. So many of life's big factors happen on-the-fly. Cut yourself a break.

I guess my big point is, that if you spend you time pursuing and cultivating your interests and personal relationships, passionately and ethically, then you'll be too busy making and enjoying a good life, rather than kicking yourself for what you don't have, haven't done yet, or feeling like the clock is running out on you when you're still only quarter-aged!:D

Emo is a bit of a stretch.

:lol You're "worried" about your lack of accomplishments at age 20. Unless those accomplishments include bagging tail at spring break or belching contests, you have nothing to worry about.

PS. 99% of people accomplish nothing of note in their whole lives. It's ok. You're one of us.

I felt like this many times. The key is to date women 5 to 10 years younger than you. Although in your case that might lead to a visit with:
