Along with ASH and Tempest, this game SHOULD be 256 MB for all these beautiful FMV's.

I can only assume this will be for major scenes only. I skipped FFIII, as I couldn't justify $40 for a game that seemed like one of the weaker installments. This is a must-buy, however, even if I own the GBA version.

Yeah, for major story scenes that look like this:

With the black text box, instead of the regular blue text box used for dialog.

Phew... That's great!
I honestly thought they would use the low-polygon models for cutscenes, too.
Are these the first screenshots of these models released? I've never seen them before.

those are the low poly models as they appear on the field and in battle, from what I can tell

Er, those ARE the low-poly models. They've shown up in a bunch of places already.
Hmm... To me, they look a lot better than the ones on the previously released screenshots.

May very well be just the zoomed-in characters in the old shots.

That tends to happen when we get "official" screen shots.

Chairman Kaga as Golbez makes this GOTC for me. Awesome pics too. (and I want those toys :o ). This game can't come out fast enough :(

They just announced FFIV will have....voices?

Cecil: Shizuma Hidoshima
Rosa: Yuko Kaida
Kain: Koichi Yamadera
Gilbert: Ryo Horikawa
Rydia: Noriko Shitaya
Palom & Porom: Rie Kugimiya
Yan: Tesshou Genda
Edge: Hiroya Ishimaru
Cid: Ichiro Nagai
Fusoya: Banjou Ginga

The only names that jump out at me are Ryo Horikawa (Vegeta as Edward? lol), Rie Kugimiya (I would've thought she'd play Rydia if she was ever cast in this) and Chairman Kaga of course.

Only way all this madness could be better is if it were on a console, as I almost can't believe the DS is capable of looking that good, having FMV, and having voice acting.

DS as platform almost confirms that the game won't be jam-packed with FMV galore. Although you could put quite a lot of videos onto one cartridge...
But seeing how the game's in-game graphics turn out, I don't really need that much FMVs. I'd rather go for full voice-acting in story scenes.

Wow they are working hard but I cant say I completely agree with the direction they went. The in game graphics and FMV dont mess together well at all, stark contrast aka ps1 era. You are playing a blocky SD game, now your watching a cg movie, etc. You think they would have picked more of a tech like Innocence that would blend more if you wanted so many cutscenes . You think if anyone could push sprite or cell shading without SD Square could. Oh well maybe for FF6.

hm, I imagine there won't be too many cg movies to interrupt the flow of the game. While we did see some interesting clips interspersed with the in-game stuff during the TGS trailer, I think that may be the result of some inspired editing and that most of these scenes are jammed together in one big collage for the intro (like FF3's).

Nah, don't think it's due to the latter being off-screen.
Looks like it to me. Rydia's model looks exactly the same. The colors are just slightly off in the first screen because it isn't direct feed.

I'm guessing there'll only be a CG movie at the begining and end of the game, full motion video takes up alot of real estate when all you've got is a 1 gig flash card... and I think that's 1 gigabit not byte so it's actually only 128 megabytes. Or can the DS go higher then that?

It's weird that they threw the 3d remakes on DS but the PSP which actually has alot of horsepower and lots of disc space gets the 2d remakes...

They can do 256MB cards now. ASH is the first game to use one.

And please don't start with the WHY ISNT THIS ON PSP bull honkey.

well, we all know how hardware sales and software sales are like in Japan, and the fact that the team at Matrix already worked on the DS and created the FF3 engine helps a lot too... and the fact that these were originally for a Nintendo system (remember when they announced that Nintendo fans would be happy with the announcement? which turned out to be FF4R)...

costs more money to make good 3D, like the PSP should rightly have. Even this ugly 3D costs more money to develop than that RPG-maker crap that they tried to push out in FFI and FFII PSP.

for the record, I'm not putting my hate on for this, if anything perhaps I'll finally be able to play through all of FF4 , something I've never accomplished actually. It merely seems silly to have put the effort to force 3d on a handheld that can barely handle it when it can do very nice looking 2d graphics. My biggest problem with FF3 DS stemmed from the limited 3d graphics, I'd have much prefered a 2d remake but I suppose we can't win 'em all.

So if they do have a 256 megabyte card now , would that make the load times that ff3 suffered from even worse? I know the reports out of TGS say that the loads were fixed but it was probally a small demo with a tiny sdcard version only a few megabytes in size that didn't need to scan over everything like the final version likely will have to do.

If the game does wind up being a 256 mb release though we could probally get upwards of 10 minutes of CG and probally an hour or so of voice(remember it only takes a few seconds to read out an entire line of speech so an hour is more then you might think). The actual game data is likely pretty small , 48-64mb I'd guess. so that'd leave a couple hundred megabytes for the other stuff, I don't know anything about the video codec used on the DS but using the FF3 opening as an example it was super compressed. 15 FPS 160X120... maybe 128kbps audio with 256kbps video. 400kilobits per second/50kilobytes would mean 1 minute of video is about 3 megabytes... if that is the case I could see maybe 20 minutes of cinematics tops.. if the quality is higher then my guess though then closer to 10 minutes. As far as the voice acting goes well, 128kbps audio is just shy of 1 megabyte per minute so there could actually be about 90 minutes of voice acting which would translate into around 1000 lines of dialog. If the game is only a 128 card like FF3 though expect about half of all that content.

~stays away from deformed FF characters~

I guess you won't be playing FF Tactics on PSP or any of the early FFs then, LOSER

Zilch said:
Really, the only main FFs without deformed characters are FFVIII, FFX, FFXI, and FFXII.

No shit. Some mentioned staying away from the IV remake's deformed characters.

Were 2D sprites really more life-like? If I were walking to class and passed a 2D sprite, I'd institutionalize myself. I see deformed people all the time.
