FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Face Extradition to U.S. - NYT

Did you watch the conference? they happily gave FBI info, most likely already made a deal where blatter is immune

Nah, what they were talking about there was how last November they lodged a complaint with Switzerland over the bidding process.

Essentially, they saw things were getting worse so they went to the Swiss threw some ex-FIFA people under the bus. Except now the FBI's involved, and the people they're targeting are still with FIFA, and they're targeting them for more than the bidding irregularities.

So I don't know that what they did in November is going to do shit to help them with the FBI. Especially since the people being fingered had since left FIFA.

wow I really thought they were untouchable :O
Amazing I really hope this helps for the future of FIFA (probably not) let them rot in jail for the long time.

But this over 1 billion in the bank they have the best lawyers in the world.

Yep, Concacaf needs to be remade, currently it is a joke. The islands should be another confederation and Canada/US/ Mexico/Central America/South America should be a big confederation like UEFA
That would be something like 20 association members. CONCACAF would lose a lot of its power, so it would never happen.

Also, the stuff happening today with CONCACAF is rampant in Africa and Asia as well.

In all seriousness though, bravo to the DoJ. That FIFA is stunningly corrupt has been common knowledge for years - why no-one has made a case until now I'm not sure. I see most of charges relate to CONCACAF activities - hopefully the investigation will result in more arrests related to wider FIFA activities. Blatter should be under serious scrutiny.

FIFA, being the governing body for most popular sport on the planet, is an entity that a lot of countries aren't willing to cross since they don't want to risk hurting their country (being barred from international tournaments being a prime example).

That's why FIFA has been so corrupt for so long, nobody was willing to call them on their bullshit.

There's not enough popcorn in the world. The ramifications could be fucking massive if other countries decide to pile on now that they are weakened.

FIFA will go down in a fiery mess.

FIFA never gives jackshit happily. Never. They have to have them by the balls.
Sadly I think we're being too positive here. They'll punish some but Blatter will remain unscathed and continue for 4 more years.

Also, to my demise, I don't think there's power in this world that will ever cancel the Qatar WC.

The best thing about this is we'll probably hear John Oliver ranting on his show come Sunday.

This is amazing! Never thought I would see something like this happen. The US saving football, who would have thought?

The national bodies governing sports competitions are politically influenced in many countries.

Given that some of the most powerful clubs are also closely tied to some political parties and that any kind of upheaval could spell disaster for local competitions, many governments prefer not to dwelve too much into this kind of corruption. Also, what linkboy said. Panes et circenses and all that.

So what you're saying is they've cultivated a lot of jilted parties that would be better off if they were torn down and have been waiting for this chance for decades.

The Olympics are FAR different. You have to build specialized fields and tracks and such for those sports. Soccer requires grass and seats.

And jumpers. Don't forget jumpers.

Isn't it just, hmmm? Kids in the park, jumpers for goalposts? Marvellous!

I bet this starts a cascade of indictments from country's that were likely too scared to do anything. The US jumped first, I bet others will now follow.

This all sounds very amazing. Riveting, I would say. Most exciting thing that's happened in the world so far this year.

Hoo boy, I hope the trial is public.

Thanks America (again)!
Seriosly, the US get way too much crap from Europeans. When shit hit the fan, we are all happy that America steps in.
What a shame for EU authorities who have been going along with FIFA's cesspool all the time.

(I am European btw)

Hah, Russian or Qatari are fucked.

Hopefully both.

BBC's panorama made accusations against FIFA members, one of which was Warner back in 2010 regarding the 2018 world cup. Big stink about it back then as it jeopardised Englands bid.

The journalist who ran that investigation just confirmed he passed evidence over to the FBI. He also says that FIFA didn't start this investigation and that FIFA will have no idea if the FBI are investigating Blatter

Just knowing that something substantive is finally happening that could put a stop to the massive human suffering in Qatar (at least the suffering related to the 2022 WC) is a huge relief.

For the longest time it felt like no one was ever going to do anything about it.

I just truly want to believe that John Oliver really had something to do with this and helped push the investigation to the next step.

I really hope that he has time to talk about it this week.

No John Oliver this week, there's a 1 week break.

So when will we be getting a supercut of all the sighs from the spin doctor?

Actually, I think Qatar may prevent this from going fully nuclear. The political nature of the deals made by FIFA and Qatar's government gives a new dimension to this case.

Is America willing to take a huge dump on Qatari nobility just to bring FIFA to justice? I'm afraid there's a lot at stake here, and much of it is not fully visible.

Exactly.

The Air Force, for example, has a base in Qatar.

It appears that this finally got the Swiss Federal Procecuters off their ass, they are launching an investigation into the 2018 and 2022 Worldcup voting. About damn time it's a shame we turned a blind eye to it over all those years (not that we aren't doing that a lot... ) and I hope Blatter doesn't make it out of this unscathed.

Given how aggressively DOJ is pursuing this, I can't imagine they began this investigation not knowing that it could result in Qatar losing the World Cup.

So yeah, I think the U.S. is prepared to piss off the Qatari royal family.
