Fighting game tournaments and next gen.

I don't see any reason to run on xbone unless its a xbone exclusive game. Price, hardware and convenience all favors ps4 currently.

People use 360 currently because it's the "superior" of the otherwise two equal consoles. Less input delay, less lag on stages.

When one console dominates the field, since most people I know will pick up the PS4 given what we know, that slight performance difference will be thrown into the wind. Tourney standard will be PS4 even if it's slightly "worse". The less minute differences in switching between consoles benefits people anyway. The timing will be more consistent if that 1f of input delay is still there, or stages lag slightly.

Given what we know about PS4, it's the only console we can use at locals/regionals here. The internet is unstable as hell and no one's going to hook up ethernet on top of all that power grid that goes through the hotels North East majors deal with. Setups are hard enough to get going as it is.

Wouldn't direct live streaming via Twitch through Xbox One be a big boon? (or would it kill it because of Xbox One DRM?)

Or can PS4 replicate this entirely?

lol, man, tournament stream are not handled by the console itself, they're handled by the stream station and Spooky or whoever can choose where they host the stream.

don't worry, PS4 FGC will still be on twitch.

I do not see KI as a competitive game. Fun? Sure.

Well, it does have a good team behind it with fighting game backgrounds. If they can work with the fighting game community to tweak and make it better, there is no reason it won't be super competitive.

Launch title (rushed production guaranteed here), uses the fundamentally questionable design of KI, looks really ugly.

I'm willing to be surprised. And I'm confident it'll be a fun game to mess around with. Just not, y'know, competitively sound. It'll be a second son in the community at absolute best.

The barriers of competitive play aren't really met for a rock solid game. It's coming out on a console a bunch of competitive players aren't going to buy because it simply won't be able to function at half the tournaments I go to. Even if I wanted to play it competitively, I wouldn't be able to! Some of the venues I go to cannot fulfill the internet requirements.

Edit: I mean, if it was held with like a small amount of XboxOnes, and people brought their own, and then everyone owned an XboxOne stick, and then we used a 4G hotspot or something, it MIGHT be possible, but that's a huge barrier of entry.

As a friend of one of the TOs here, the XBOne has no chance in hell of even being considered for anything other than KI, it is just not worth the trouble.

How much attention have you paid to the project? You should check out the stream CrossCounter hosted last night. It is hilariously too early to say it is not competitively sound based on the information we have.

I listened to the designers explain the mechanics. I'd be happy to have a longer conversation about this later.

Does not fix the fact that the XboxOne is a tournament organizer's worst nightmare.

Naw man, I'm calling you out on this. What makes the game "not competitively sound"?

Well, the KI devs haven't been shy around the questions regarding xbone policies. They said they're working with MS to make sure it will be at touraments, which to me sounds like they have some way around it. Or maybe it being digital only may allow it to skip the 24 hour check thing.

The PS4 will probably be standard, if only because of the lower price, no mandatory eyetoy, and no reliance on internet/game authentication. I'm wondering when the big fighting games will move to next gen. I'm guessing the earliest will be Guilty Gear Xrd, right?

They also have also welcomed any feedback regarding balancing. These guys are trying to do it right.

Apparently, Double Helix and Microsoft are looking into the connected to the internet issue, as "Killer Instinct is planned for tournament play". According to DH's Patrick Gilmore's Twitter.
