Fighting Games Weekly | July 30 - August 5

Hold Back To Block TV is doing a series of mini-documentaries entitled Quarter on a Ledge, about Eight On The Break and other last arcades across US and elsewhere. Linked is the first episode.

EDIT: ECC sounds like it would've been crazy.

EDIT2: 4$ for THAT? If I'm ever in NJ I'm hitting up The Break for sure.

WNF on 8/8 will feature P4A!

Wednesday Night Fights:AE Summer Edition Schedule for August 8, 2012

9:30PM - 10:30PM - Persona 4 Exhibition on stream.
10:30PM - END - AE 2012 Matches
9:30PM - 12AM - Persona 4 Tournament

I think Japan doesn't have as much interest in the SF tournament for various reasons as a whole. They were originally in the schedule.

They hate HDR, pretty a general universal consensus at this point.
SF3 online. Most of the old school players have fallen off the face of the earth.
SFXT, refer to HDR.
AE. They have way too many events to run and support themselves to care about this. SBO and Topanga stuff lined up for the rest of the year as well as other things.

Wait, Japan doesn't have it's own qualifier ?

Must be a legal thing, why else would you pass one of the biggest countries when it comes to fighting games, with a relatively healthy arcade scene to boot.

That's my guess too. They're not allowed to play for money but I'm not sure if winning just a plane ticket would be acceptable.

I have a feeling we'll see some of the killers from japan make it out to Taiwan.

That Sanford pop off was on the money. He is completely right in that EC is losing to ChrisG because they aren't exploring the game outside their own comfort zone and selection of characters. ChrisG knows what he has to do to win, other players don't.

It's weird, he says EC is not hungry, but says Noel Brown is hungry, and doesn't say why he doesn't beat ChrisG. He didn't say straight up Noel doesn't counter pick or just isn't as good as ChrisG.
Noel is hungry for sure but he also falls into the same problem that Sanford was talking about in that he plays within his comfort zone. I know Noel is working on some new teams but he isn't there yet and I don't really know if those teams are the answer. I just know that Wolverine + Wesker teams get beat by MorriDoom team REALLY bad so it's going to be at a disadvantage if he tries that duo.

In Marvel it's not enough to have a single team anymore. Too many varied threats, anti tech and counters to keep track of.

He's also right about Yipes... Yipes needs to start entering tournaments. Everyone knows he is one of the best in the world and he establishes himself as one of the best by playing long sets in casuals. That's not enough, you have to have the wins on paper and Yipes need to bring back his killer tournament extinct back. Viscant was talking about how Yipes has all this insane tech that no one really knows about and he is a training lab monster but when he plays in tournament it's like a different player playing in tournaments as compared to casuals/long sets.

bububu chrisg is a fraud because he won like 3 majors and a bunch of other tournaments because he relies on morridoom which i cant use because its too hard so he must be a scrub because he doesnt use rushdown bloo bloo bloo

So no VF on stream?

I know a lot of people here like P4, but not really my cup of tea.

Does anyone think this will be the time slot for all new games? Like TTT2 will replace it in soon?

I hope people are still playing VF

Probably. Unless P4 is still so popular that they have to move it to TRB or something. And they said they'll still be hosting VF there. It just won't be on stream, which is a shame for people who want to promote VF.

I'm still currently listening to it, but doesn't Sanford reside in his comfort zone by not playing MvC3 at all? He says Noel is too stubborn, yet he won't even play the game because of his initial impressions.

And don't most people believe that Sanford would be good at the game if he tried? So complaining about it is one thing, but why doesn't Sanford do something about it?

So I don't really get it.

It is far easier to complain about something than to actually do something. Sanford doesn't like the game, but he's more than willing to be an armchair coach.

Wasn't it just two weeks ago that LAakira got the sponsorship needed to offer money to those who beat him? Which is maybe the most interesting actual fighting game news in a while.

FGC is cannibalizing itself, but at least it really isn't anyone's fault. Too much to play.

I have no problem with him arm coaching because he is right, why should he go out of his way to be better at a game he does not like.

Above all, Sanford hates MvC3 because "anyone can win." Yet, at the same time, Yipes is by far and away the best to him and names countless scenarios where skill rose above the random factor. Last time he said he'd step his shit up and reassert his dominance but he didn't.

Sanford seems to be pretty well acquainted with the game and that rant (the beginning captured by that YouTube video at least) did not have the salty goggles on. If he doesn't like the game, he doesn't have to play it, but I do keep getting the feeling that he keeps trying to force himself to like the game and it never works out because it isn't MvC2, leading to these rants again and again.

Hey he admitted he is guilty of it too (hence his Sagat example). This was more a rant on the EC scene in general and he's right. You don't need to appreciate MVC3 to realize that ChrisG being dominant is more a problem with the community rather than him being head and shoulders above the rest.

Yeah it's arm chair coaching/commentary but someone has to do it to get the players motivated.

Yeah, I agree.

Also: UDON announces Super Street Fighter: New Generation and Akuma Origins Graphic Novels.

FChamp plans to play Persona4 just to body Dacidbro and other P4 specialists. Hasn't decided on a character yet.

He should play Elizabeth just so he can prove that he can do it with a character who isn't considered as straightforward as most others.

And because I want to see more Elizabeth players.

FGTV was pretty funny in the morning. CJ won that set against Champ and started bragging, giving out autographs, saying he will beat anyone if he can beat Champ like that. Hours later they play again and I come back to the stream seeing Champ with like a 30+ win streak against him. Then CJ pops off. LOL.

Been catching myself watching FGTV pretty often actually. I never used to watch it at all but sometimes it's just nice to throw on in the background while your doing something else. I understand now.

I dont buy it. Hes saying EC is lazy because they dont counterpick Chris G and thats why hes so dominant? Chris G is so dominant because hes good and hungry to be the best. He was a mistake away from grand finals at Evo, and faced tons o WC players who "could counter pick".

Well there was a qualifier in Singapore for the SF 25th Anniversary Global Tournament Series. Matches and winners are below

SSF4: AE 2012
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1gnTYMb9k4&feature=g-subs-u

SFxT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyLTZnsodW0&feature=g-subs-u

SF3: 3rd Strike
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGGDBoVi2sk&feature=g-subs-u

No mention of HDR though.
Tokido
was also there and I guess the Singaporeans were able to prevent him from winning this qualifier and going to Taiwan for the Asian Grand Finals. Western Heretic pointed this out earlier, but I guess only the qualifier in Taiwan will actually send two winners in SFxT, SF4, and one winner each in HDR/3SO to San Francisco for the true Grand Finals. So the GF match we saw in Korea with Poongko and Infiltration didn't guarantee them a spot in San Francisco just yet like it did for the guys in Austin. They'll probably be in Taiwan to try and win the Asia qualifier. But for the ones who don't win, there will be 4 qualifiers left(Paris, London, LA, Brazil) so they can still try to qualify from one of those 4 if they fail to do so in Taiwan. And only 2 spots for all those Asian killers is clearly not enough but that's what they'll have to deal with.

I just saw these in my YouTube subs last night, and was surprised to see Akira! Basically a similar situation to Humanbomb, except Akira is originally from Japan and was a top 2 (probably) 3s player in Australia for several years, i think 04-08 or so. I probably have those years way off.

FGTV is gaming's reality TV. I was watching first to see the tech but then kept watching for the build up towards EVO and gaining respect to FChamp's training. CJ gets a ton of hate but he never quits. I think FChamp was happy for CJ but it probably woke him up and thus the 30 game win streak.

Probably gonna play SF4 this week at my work during lunch break. I haven't touched that game since Xmas.

I'm probably playing Mitsuru/Liz myself. Wish I could find a P4 member that's relevant to my interests but these two are already so interesting to myself.

General consensus when some of them said they liked it?

General consensus yes. Majority doesn't like it in Japan. Majority in the world doesn't like it. I can only name one person from the top of my head that really really likes it besides Sirlin.

He's making the mistake of blaming this on the "East Coast" because that's who he's surrounded by. He just thinks it's an East Coast problem when it's really a "The Top Tier of players is already doing this and the next tier needs to level up there game if want to compete at that level" problem.

The crux of his argument is that people tend not to put in the work that they should know they need to do to beat him and they just stick with what's proven to fail time and time again, and that's pretty much right on the money. On the flipside, Chris G does bother to put in the work to have good backup plans when he needs them, and that's why he wins consistently.

The only point of argument is that this advice is only really good for the small handful of players who can actually contend with Chris G right now. Everyone else has to focus on becoming solid enough to even place at that level before they start worrying about countering Chris G specifically.

He's not saying ChrisG isn't good or isn't hungry in fact he SPECIFICALLY said that ChrisG wins because he is hungry and is regular at tournaments plus does what he needs to in order to win matches.

He said that even ChrisG counter picks and adapts to other player's teams, which is what other players should be doing also especially against MorriDoom. Also he is implying that the rest of the players, while smart don't have their execution or game knowledge up to snuff compared to ChrisG's.

I think this rant/pop off is more geared towards the average EC competitor who comes to the tournament with his 3 point team comprising of the usual suspects and doesn't bother to look deeper in his team construction or how well it does against other teams. I agree with this, a lot of EC players just have bad team constructions (not bad characters just bad team compositions) that are ill equipped to handle stuff like MorriDoom. It's pretty telling that there isn't a SINGLE top or known Strider player in the EC, one MODOK (Dire) and a couple of Dorm players at best. You have to go as far as Florida to find Flocker (Strider). Now that is an example of a player who knows what he has to do to win, it's why he incorporated Strider into his team to begin with AND was the one who put ChrisG in losers at EVO.

And that is how you get better. Play with better people and get bodied until you gradually learn to deal with them. Everybody is laughing at CJ but he's approaching it the right way. And Champ is also right in giving him tough love, mocking him when he does something stupid, repeatedly troll him with certain tactics to get him to learn from his mistakes, etc.

The difference between CJ and a normal human being is that

A) A regular person would have adapted a lot sooner.
B) When a regular person lose 1-100 they are humble. Instead when he lose 100 straight then wins one he pop off like he's the greatest player in the universe.
C) He's mad salty when he loses, makes shitty excuses, and also at time at tournaments refuse to shake the other person's hand.

He's got that dumbass online player mentality.

the last i've watched of fgtv was when the japanese players stayed at the house. i don't watch streams just to watch them. if i'm going to waste my time on a stream then its likely to be the break or big two and that's pretty much it.
