Fighting Games Weekly | July 30 - August 5

He dropped the pen right as he was finally about to make his mark.

That would explain why Andre's signature isn't on there.

Jesus Christ. :lol

Chen with the truth persona 4 gonna die as fast as skull girls.

What audience did Skull Girls really have? And Persona 4 has a huge Japan following for one thing, and I'm pretty sure all the USA Blaz Blue/Guilty Gear players are gonna play it without a doubt.

I'm not watching the stream, but that's some ignorance being spewed by James Chen.

Oh he didnt? what did he say exactly then?

He's saying that people are using games like P4 and Skullgirls to hate on more popular games like Marvel and SFxTK rather than actually playing them. Basically calling people out on saying they are moving on to new "good" games but then not following through. In the case of P4, he's challenging people to actually put their money where their mouth is and really play the game if they like it as much as they claim.

Who are the people that are hyped up for P4A? Persona fans? Fighting game people? BB/GG players?
From what I've gauged, it's a mix of the three.

A solid mix of all 3. I come from a MB/SSBM background and I plan on picking this game up.

I think the biggest issue with playing a game like P4U is that you have to play with people who like P4U...

LOLOL

UltraChen breaking my heart here.

He does have a point about Skull Girls though.

I just don't understand how people could be so down on a game when we haven't even had a big US major post EVO yet. Skullgirls had great numbers at several majors and even surpassed KOF, SCV and MK9 at several points, but not a single person said shit when that happened. Not a single person made it the topic of the day.

EVO is done and Skullgirls had it's biggest tournament showing of the year as the second biggest side game, but it's dead because people are on the Persona hype train.

I don't get this community. I don't get it and it frustrates me so.

So what exactly did happen with Skullgirls? It got so much hype and from my perspective the interest died down fairly quickly after only a couple weeks before getting knocked down to anime game status and then quietly forgotten. And now there were those that were big advocates of it like Honzo calling it crap, and Fanatiq said it was the best game he played and I never saw him play it ever, or rarely if he ever did.

And this talk just reminds me of also when SFxT was coming out and how a number of people where all R.I.P. SF4, few even went so far as to troll in the OT and say it. lol

So the question I guess will SFxT survive and be the third game, or will it continue being 2 games and flavors of the month being hyped up like crazy until release?

What a disappointing state if the FGC is really like that.

It's the Street Fighter community, not the Fighting Game Community. Always has been, always will be. People don't want to play the game that nobody else is playing, so they play Street Fighter 4, even as they keep saying how much they hate that game or whatever the excuse of the week is. All games are measured by the success of Street Fighter 4, and not how things were before that game.

That's not what he said at all. Not even remotely so.

Skullgirls was the next coming according to prospective purchasers, and weekly attendance dropped off so heavily that it's practically non-existent now, despite continued reports it's alive. When weekly attendance becomes a factor in whether to run it in a major or not, things will drop of even further, especially when more and more games are releasing. Games have to work extra hard to stay alive, and basically there might not be space for everyone. Well, there isn't. Especially if people stop showing up to weeklies.

The only games with an actual strong weekly scene are Capcom games anyway. Also, I'm not saying that UltraChen consider Skullgirls dead. My main complaint is with the community itself. Most of those guys have been saying that shit since day one. You can see someone just a few posts up saying that the game fell off after two weeks.

Games can also survive just fine as majors games. Melty Blood had a nice showing at Final Round XIV last year and people were impressed by that. SG has done that all year so far until EVO. Hell, people who played in Mahvel brackets still made it to their games(basically 1% byes compared to BB where you see constant DQs). Having consistent numbers at majors alone has to be worth something.

Trying to set the bar at Capcom's levels is like setting up a roller coaster ride with a minimum height requirement of 6'6". Big tournaments are gonna be a boring and sponsor filled mess at this rate.

UltraDavid just dropped the big truth bomb about the latest lackluster attempt to fix SFxTK.

What about KoF, the game with crazy momentum and the magical coming up story?

The game didn't fall off after two weeks, I don't even agree with UltraChen's assessment that it began falling off after a month, but it doesn't have the same momentum going for it anymore it seems. It gets subjugated on streams, disappears from weeklies (causing "flavour of the month"), etc. That's not a good look.

It is a big call to walk away from a game you have invested so much into. It was like when marvel came out, I wanted to play it, but I always thought "well I could grind for a week on this, but why not spend that time on SF4?"

This is why Persona might have a chance, it seems a lot less demanding so might find a place alongside the big two.

I'm not too sure though and it depends how you define 'success'. Skullgirls never really stood a chance. Same with Darkstalkers if and when it comes out. People will hype it up but it will be "dead" in a month or so.

Reynald rocking that Chie is disgusting but so awesome...

...

Oh, right. Something something SFxT needs one more chance, Persona 4 won't make it, hate hate hate hate hate hate hate something.

This is what I'm getting at. It takes a huge push from communities, and frankly it takes a big stroke of luck, to dislodge investment in the current Big Tournament Game. KOF13 has years and years of history behind it, a huge international following, and devoted fans who got all evangelical on the scene's asses for months and months before they were taken seriously. And it's a much simpler jump from SF4 to KOF than it is from SF4 to Skullgirls, or Persona, or what have you.

Read the tweets son...pretty much people hyping up these games stop playing it after fuck all time. Let's see how popular persona 4 is two three months from now. Heh.

Why don't you read them? He did not at all declare that "persona 4 gonna die as fast as skull girls."

I wasnt watching but all I know is theres no way the circle of players I belong to are going back to SFxT.

We all traded it back in, and lost a good bit of confidence in Capcom's fighters. Confidence that should have been lost after 3SOE and UMvC3 (even if the latter was good.)

I'd rather give my money to the little guys these times around, I mean hey KoF was a great value for its price and a way better game then SFxT, and Skullgirls was great even if I sucked at it.

His implying that...I never put quotes on post. If you don't think he is implying the game is newest fad I don't know what to tell you. His comparisons to skull girls rings true.

All I know is Dacid Bro a huge supporter of Skull Girls basically left because everyone had long ass 100+ combos w/o even repeating a string so that infinite detection didn't even kick in.

Yeah, when Skullgirls came out in JP arcades months before console and was the most heavily played arcade game......wait, what?

Yeah I like the game, and have seen some great matches (mostly non-us players, not knocking them, because you play to win but Justin, Ricky and so on are not fun to watch).

But there is no way I'm investing more time and money into it. I think the game could be great, but it is too late now. I'm hoping SF4 and Persona will tide me over till SF5 (assuming I can actually buy it before SF5 comes out...)

All this thread is reminding me of right now is that I'm a fraud for loving Skullgirls but not picking it up because Marvel crack is hard to put down and also for really really falling for Persona 4 Arena based on the latest footage. Really, I'd play all of the fighters right now if I could, there's things I love about all of them, but the hardest part is the juggling act to do in a situation like that.

Part of this is that leading up to and following Evo, SG has had that upcoming patch hanging over it that makes nontrivial changes to several characters and the IPS system, which is going to take a bite out of how most of the cast's current optimized combos work.

You could technically build post-patch optimized combos now and use them, but the Sword of Damocles-effect of a patch with major upcoming changes everyone knows is coming always cuts into momentum/hype--especially for a game with an install base less than a tenth of the mainstream titles.
