Fighting Games Weekly | May 4-10 | WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!

GGXrd's soundtrack is pretty unremarkable. None of the pieces blow my mind, though they do their job as background music to the fights competently. But as compositions it just feels they're way too busy, they sound like those "Videogame Song X metal cover" things you see on youtube. Cram as much noise in as you can muster, but the original song dies somewhere along the way. The compositions themselves feel plodding and overly methodical.

But when the last generation gave us things like this:

UNIEL:

Yeah, hard to get excited.

Do you people listen to music that isn't some form of soundtrack? I never notice soundtracks to games in the slightest but actively listen to tons of bands/artists. I'm wondering how often people who really care about soundtracks and take note of them actively listen to/seek out music independent of soundtracks

When you win in HnK it goes DAH DAH DAHHHH and that makes me feel good about myself.

I listen to a lot of "real" music. Lots of good stuff out there, so might as well. I love games with good soundtracks, good music is a really underappreciated part of the game experience. Once upon a time, sound fidelity was advertised as a feature and it was done for a reason.

Yup.

Given my lambasting of covers in a post above, I think it's only fair to post a couple VGM covers that capture the feel of the song amazingly:

Xenoblade, Gaur Plains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkFZGhtYvCo

Pokemon Trainer Battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOzFOjB-JBo

I listen to a few soundtracks, but it's only select songs that I feel are actually good enough stand alone as a song.(i.e. arashi no saxaphone, True Love Makin, most of the 3S soundtrack) Other than that it's non-soundtrack music all the way, such as the gawd Kendrick Lamar and Yeezy.

 • GGXrd's music is uncharacteristically trash coming from the GG pedigree. I'm not really sure what happened there.
 • The music from Marvel 2 isn't "good" in the classical sense but its is cheezy enough to be enjoyable in a "so bad its good way". Kind of like the soundtracks to a lot of the newer Sonic the Hedgehog games.
 • The Skullgirls soundtrack is very good but not in the "music you want to listen too when you are punching someone in the face" way. It's a bit weird in that way though some songs are an exception (like Beowulf's themes).

On a side note I really want to buy UNEIL but its hard to justify $28 on a game I know I won't have much time to "practice" on or hop online with. Waht are the single player options like (I know the question is kind of blasphemous but I'm still curious)?
The best fighting game soundtrack is the licensed Aerosmith music in DOA4.
Finally found what made me press ignore.

I want to play more UNIEL again. I should learn a better character on the side though. Trying Yuzuriha, but neutral game is going to take some time getting used to. Might just learn more Hyde too.
Not interested in Linne? I feel like she's a stronger character than Nanase. Her run always surprises me with how fast it is. Can run right under Hilda's 2C on reaction lol

Kuuga pressure can be pretty obnoxious too.

How are you guys even mad? That makoto/10 disgrace ratio made me spit out an imaginary cup's worth of water lol.

On a serious note, I think the BB series has some of the best music this genre has to offer. Some of it is straight dope, but over time it got a few too many japanese vocals involved which really limits the appeal. The live Japanese vocal music is fucking godlike, though. Bang is the manliest of men to don a Ninja suit.

Agreed on the last two. SG really started improving with BB's stage theme (Unfinished business) and beyond. Beowulf's theme is definitely feels best for punching someone right in the kisser. The CPS2 SG themes are top tier fighting music, though.

So which category do covers belong to like "Fly Me To The Moon" and "Moon River" in Bayonetta. Both songs are used to pretty good effect throughout at the game.

Something about this post is confusing the hell outta me. I guess ppl not listening to music outside of soundtracks

I tried for a bit. She's definitely Eltnum mixed in with Nanase. I like Nanase's ability to zone with her fireball, but Linne being able to just straight up start pressure with hers is just way better. I should probably go back to her. Only used her briefly.

That sounds insane lol

Would def try out

I'd be surprised if Jason really gets armor on every move. Or if he does, it gets patched out ASAP. That sounds like one of the things that would outrage casuals the most. Dealing with armor on characters is one of the most non-intuitive things for new players. What do you mean I can't just hit him!?!?

See that's easily solved by the "Every hit is armor breaker" DLC. Buy 50 armor breakers for 10 dollars!

On that note, I'm wondering if people would be interested in a regular lobby like what we had last night. I don't know how many people would be interested or how long it would last, but let's try to do something next weekend and see what happens.

I'll be real with you -- it's a rather bare-bones release. You have you standard modes (arcade, training, time attack, survival, etc.) and that's really it. There's no bloated VN added on like a typical ArcSys release.

When in doubt, TK Kuuga! :barf: Linne is annoying as hell... but that's true for every good character in this game, really. Basically, Linne basically makes Nanase redundant in this game.

I'd be up for it. I'm not too busy during the weekends, so those would be the days for me.

Playing a lot of skullgirls and I thinks it's super fun still. when I look at it compared to mvc2 it's obviously quite a bit slower but the pace is diminished even further by the combo length. There are def a lot of resets in sg and no mvc2 style infinites but the average Magnus combo before rest in mvc2 is like 5 hits then reset or back to neutral.

I know people love combo theory and the creativity of all that but in this game I think it hurts what is cool about it which is basically everything else .

It is easy to feel that way until you run into top tier Fukua players. Also, all the best players are resetting like crazy now. Not many games have such a wildly varying pace like this one between the two camps of high level players.

Beginner/Mid play is max length combos
High level play is resets

First group hasn't been given the fear of god yet thanks to how much meter your opponent will get from long combos.
