Fighting Games Weekly | Nov 18-24 | WELCOME THRILLHO

Why wasn't the KI tourney streamed?

I don't think anyone's surprised that Wong was going to take it. I would've liked to have seen it, though.

Wow, looks like they actually got a decent amount of people to show up.

Granted, I'm sure there's more to whatever event that is than just watching dudes play Killer Instinct.

This is probably going to end up as some 3 minute promotional video right?

Yes.

GGPO-style netcode needs a non-trivial amount of memory for enough prediction frames to be really effective.

When GGPO was being touted around as 'easy to implement/add to any fighting game', this was a pretty key caveat that nobody talked about enough. If you've made a game and are running at the limits of the memory budget(which is something you'd naturally approach fast on console), turning around and clearing space for prediction frames late in the game is probably not easy to do. (There's also the added CPU overhead, since the CPU has the task of possibly remaking the state of the game on a per-frame basis.)

But if you look at this the other way, the statement is true if you know you have the opening hardware-wise, which is why Iron Galaxy can churn out GGPO ports with impunity.

Bandwidth is more or less a trivial element for most online games; it's latency and packet loss that actually matter. FGs aren't an exception to this. I suspect that MS's online back-end is better/less restrictive for requesting data on X1 than it is on 360, so that might help.
Appreciate you dropping knowledge. Yeah the question that comes to my mind here is whether it was enough in the first place on 360/PS3, or if it was different for digital/arcade releases and retail titles.

If the publishing company is a big enough player, they could exercise the option of getting around some of the console holder's restrictions/red tape for online stuff, if that's what you mean.
