Fighting Games Weekly | November 12-18 | WSHH Edition

SF25th is a one off though so to me that makes it just a big tournament.

If you just concentrate on size, really EVO is the only major. Anything else is relatively small.

So it comes back for me about the event being large but also having some meaning or tradition behind it. People should be proud to win and later defend their title, even if the realities of the fgc make this impossible.

Is it important to define? No. But a lot of discussion is "so and so" has never won a major or "this character" has never won a major. This is generally interesting but pointless unless we agree on what that means.

Every tournament wants to be a "major" but I think the fewer the better so things are not too spread out.

Anyone check out The On Blast Show? They started out a few months ago and they're getting pretty big. The show is really damn funny and most of the time they get big guest such as the MK actors who did the mo-cap for the past MK games.

Last week they interviewed John Tobias (MK creator with Ed Boon). http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MzSPtos75W8

The show is on everyone Tuesday 10pm est. Tonight they'll be talking about this year's NEC tournament.

I think the term Major is most associated with an actual series, so yeah EVO seeding points would be the criteria, but like toddhunter says above me, it doesn't really matter when "non-majors" have just as many attendants and produce the same sort and scale of tournament at the end of the day.

Ghost Rider hasn't won anything, he was used as a troll when another team already demoralized everyone up till then. If you don't play it all the way through, too many variables are affected to say that that character definitely outwit all the trials the tournament had to offer.

Anyways, are there no details of Bar Fights out there on the net or what? SRK showed me nothing and Cross Counter's new website is confusing me.

Negro please we have been using the term Major way before EVO seeding points were even introduced. Fucking 09ers!!!!!!!!!! (not but seriously EVO seeding points just started a few years back. Can't use that shit)

So then what is it most associated with then?

Big tournament is a big tournament is a major or no?

This is the true definition of a "major": an event where you don't have to reference the FGC rulebook to find out for sure whether it's a major or not.

Well for me it was a tournament that represented an area. Like for example MWC cover the mid west. ECC cover the northeast. NCR cover the West. Final Round covered the south. Then EVO covered everyone.

This was all of course way before streaming. And now there's so many new tournaments like CEO, and SCR etc..

So what about grander tournaments like CEO and CC then? They certainly draw in the locals (still the biggest chunk of players that get to show their stuff) and represent that area's talent but also international and country-wide competition, but are not at the very topmost EVO level?

Hey dude, you started it.

What are Alpha 3/SF4/SC5 World Championships and the SF25th supposed be then?

These are tourney where qualifiers were held across the globe to gain entry, top players are being flown in compete in the final pool and are held once a blue moon. The scale, logistics and desire are unparalleled.

So for majors I have:

SoCal Regional
NorCal Regional
NEC
CEO
Final Round
ECT (I think they made the leap this year to be considered a major)

I think Summer Jam and Winter Brawl are more of a regional.

Very large tournaments. If they had them every year they would easily be majors.

Sponsors, players and supporters can't really plan their fg year around them consistently which should be a goal.

So I think Aris will be streaming a major from his room later tonight. If you have any interest in the new tekken characters, check it out.

I think the two main criteria for a major are high attendance (think 150-200 for the more popular games) and a decent number of high-profile players for each of the bigger games. At least, that's what it seemed to be before fighting games got to where they are now.

Anyway, if anyone cares they can watch my VF5 matches (and hear my commentary) from the latest NMF: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHL9GyibDp1xDaMIPm__jDsQ-Dqw894pT

Forever 3-2 ;_; But at least I lost to the top two placers.

Thanks for the link. Gives me something to watch while everyone streams TTT2.

Season's Beatings should be considered a major.
