Fighting Games Weekly | November 12-18 | WSHH Edition

A) At least 256 players in the largest game.
B) At least 1750 people there in attendance.

These ^ 128 man brackets is fine along with 500 and up in attendance. Attendance is what is most important, and you don't need 20 top/notable players to make it a major.

But if we take that out then Canada Cup and Shadowloo Showdown won't be majors. I had to throw it in just for those two. So are you saying you HATE Canada and AUS?

That's so mean... TSK TSK.

IMO, NCR/SCR are not majors, they are regionals.

Also, Norcalregionals/Socalregionals.

Yea but people from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, and ARZ show up to them. It's not like only Socal people are at SCR. Or Norcal people are at NCR.

And saying NCR is not a major should be a crime. It's been around for a decade. Way before CEO, ECT, SB, CC, DEV, and all the other so called majors.

For a period of time it was basically EVO, Final Round, ECC (now known as ECT), NCR, and MWC (now known as UFGT).

I think Shadowloo Showdown had over 256 players for AE, they did in 2011 at least. For me, that tournament is easily Top 5, arguably top 3 (for SF4) outside of Evo and SBO.

Why don't you guys just wait until the event is over to determine the level of play. Then you argue about that instead of whatever it is you're debating now.

imo any event in which the organizer has to book a hotel ballroom for the weekend should be considered as a major. shit costs so much money, coordination, and work.

Does anyone know what the match ups for bar fights?

I was unaware of this Gootecks event.
It's not like the last bar fights. I don't even know if there's an actual tournament, Gootecks described it as "just chill, play some games, have some drinks and have fun."

Guess I'm streaming Bar Fights tonight..... don't know which channel will be used yet....

True story: a friend and I hanged out with Gootecks on a Monday night in Denver, Colorado not too long ago (he was going back to California from Canada Cup and got stuck @ DIA for the night).

Cool dude, but his camera guy (Ryan was his name) was more sociable since (I think) Goo was tired from doing all the commentary. We talked about our local fighting game scene, the business that Gootecks is trying to run with CC, Melee/Brawl, the local club scene, and a few other things. Oh, we played against them on NBA Jam. We lost. :/ Good times.

The point of this post is that when were talking about CC and what he was trying to accomplish, he didn't sound too hot about the Bar Fights. He is basically seeing what kind of reaction a casual gathering with beer will get on the LA FGC.

He said that in order for the FGC to get huge, people (like him, I presume) need to cater to the casual crowd. You know, the guys that have full-time jobs and cannot focus on learning and practicing for a game yet have a bit of time every Sunday to watch the finals for top 8 in Marvel/AE. He wasn't really thinking of doing a stream and just let people play, but I guess he wanted to let people know about the Bar Fights so... there you go, Offcast. :P

PS: Even though we weren't trying to be THAT GUY (you know, the stream monster that wants to suck dick left and right from youtube celebrities yet hasn't even touched a fucking fighting game in a while), we were ambushed outside the bar by some dude. He basically went on how he was a huge fan of CC and what not, and was basically not letting Gootecks and Ryan walk away (it was 2AM and they asked for a ride from us, they were tired as all hell). We all basically ignored him at the end and just left him there. :D

The greatest questions of our time...

What makes a major?

When's Marvel?

Which coast is the best?

How free is Canada on the freedom tier?

What's a real nigga?

Popeye or KFC?

You can't define a "major" based on what it does/doesn't have - it's just what you say when it isn't a "minor" event. The definition is purely based on attendance to me. It means "noteworthy" or "has relevance to the wider community".

The UK has majors that the US might consider pretty minor events. EGL8 had about fifty entrants for Marvel but it was still a major UK event.

Wednesday Night Fights is not a major as each individual tournament isn't that relevant because they're weekly. ECT is a major as it's once a year, the tournament/results matter to a lot of people and people book time off to go. It doesn't have a magical item that makes it a major or not.

Well if that's the case the most important question is. Is it open bar?

Madcatz sponsor + Zerp.

Far East unless it's Marvel.

Free as can be.

A man who doesn't cry.

Popeye.

Every organizer has to do this unless they have a very good local venue.

Key difference is simple: Are you getting primarily regional players with a few sponsored ringers possibly coming in? Or are you getting players from all over the country coming in to your event. The latter is what I consider a "major."
