Final Fantasy 14 patch 2.3: Defenders of Eorzea trailer

I really have to start playing this game. Bought the PS3 Version for the PS4 Upgrade recently but haven't found the time to jump in yet...

Frontlines could be cool, if they don't fuck it. (Everything related to pvp has been a disaster so far)
Ramuh will be the usual primal scripted fight.
Mob hunts could be fun, if they don't make them daily.
The new "hard mode" dungeons will be easier than normal mode.
Chocobo raising could be cool, though I read you will be able to pretty much paint your chocobo, so what's the point?
Everything related to crafting will be useless as usual
Surprise is probably Shiva

I *want* frontlines to be great. I do fear it will end up in duty queue limbo though. They've made it accessible, which is fine and all. But the problem is, other than the currencies you obtain, there's no room for growth or development in the actual event itself (wolf marks dont really count, as that's wolves den progression). The PvP is very oddly thought out in this game.

It honestly depends on your personal play style, some are going to run though things a lot faster than others. There are hardcore groups that have Second Coil done and out of the way already, but they're a very small percentage.

There will always be a desire for more content, especially stuff that caters to people who enjoy different kinds of things to do.

I think they do fine considering.

Amazing? No. Sufficient? Yep.

The amount of endgame content released is pretty big.

For instance, WoW launched in november 2004 with one lairboss (Onyxia) and one raid (Molten Core).
The first addition to endgame content was nearly a year later, with ZG in september 2005.

Even during the TBC era, here's the timeline:

January 16 - The Burning Crusade expansion released
With, already, a ridicolous amount of endgame content:
- Three lairbosses (Maulgar, Gruul, Magtheridon)
-12-boss 10man raid (Karazhan)
- 5-boss 25man raid (The Eye)
- 6-boss 25man raid (SSC)

Which would, five months later, be stacked with Black Temple(9-boss) and Hyjal (5-boss).
Even later, 2.3 brought ZA (5-boss) November, and Sunwell(6-boss) at March next year.
(But that's past glories: Now, WoW has gone over a year without any new raiding content.)

By contrast, ARR launched with four lairboss encounters, two 3-boss raids, and a 5-boss raid; but is adding things very quickly.
If i'm correct, by 2.3 there will be five primals in Hard\Extreme\Brutal, 9 bosses in Coil and 10 bosses in CT?
And not even a year has passed since ARR launch.

I'd reckon to say it's one of the most well-content-supported MMOs i've ever seen.

I really don't think I can get back into another MMO after WoW ate up so many years of my life (at the expense of everything else), but this game keeps appealing to me so much.

Maybe when I get my PS4 I'll see if I can play it in moderation. Heh.

I'm inclined to agree, honestly.

Perhaps there's a point to be made about the content not lasting as long as desired (for some), but still. I've subbed and played nearly every day and there's still quite a bit I want to do and get done.

I only hope we'll have the same momentum in each major patch leading up to the expansion, and I haven't heard anything yet to make me think otherwise.

Hihihi, they know they can count me in when they bring Nashu and fishhead Hildibrand!

Syrcus Tower looks amazing as well, if it is as good as CT 1, this should be good!

Lol, the content(I want to play) usually is awesome, but lasts me 3 days max to complete. Then maybe a week socializing with the FC but that's it.

Chocobo raising ahhh ;_;

I'm really curious how this will work.

In XI getting a Chocobo was something that required efforts and you could only get one in towns and at the crags. Chocobos were also the only mounts (not like XIV were you can even summon a freacking Behemot). Your personal chocobo was indeed special, because you could summon it everywhere, had different speed from the normal one and color.

Yoshida already made clear all the mounts will have the same speed, you can already summon your chocobo everywhere and apparently with 3.5 you will be able to change his color at will, so... what will make your personal, raised chocobo different?

Oh man FFXII hunts? This is perfect for NM or challenging solo fights in the open world. I can't wait until the game is more fleshed out in the exploration part. I may boot this up when the Rogue and Assassin class is in, not a fan of the arena fights with their seemingly strict gear checks.

I don't have nearly as much experience as you guys - but couldn't this be remedied by adding content to existing areas? Maybe making what's already there a bit more dense? Giving people reasons to go back and level up other classes instead of steaming forward with the end game?

I think the problem is tied to the fundamental design of the game and cannot be wholly solved by band-aids. No matter how they add content, the game's progression is so narrow and sharpened that most of the game's content is doomed to be useless at any given moment. I'd argue that there being multiple paths for casual and dedicated players is only kind the combat system can support, but it only cements the idea of there being mostly useless content to any one player. To take it out of the MMO space (which I have little love for), if you've played a Souls game, especially Dark Souls II, consider how all the ways stats (including elemental weaknesses) can be used, how many pieces of gear (like, considering just one weapon type at a time) can be borne out of that (and completely unique effects), and how many ways the game can pull on you trying to find or create said gear; ARR is basically the exact opposite. Whenever they add a new dungeon with amazing presentation values, they are adding something with a very short expiration date and, in some cases, is outdated upon implementation (I think what you have in mind falls into the latter).

The leveling experience might be a slightly different issue, but I think it amounts to the same thing. After the first time, is it really anything more than a light grind buffer to the endgame? I can't help but contrast it to what leveling a fresh class/job meant in FFXI and the experiences are very different because the lacking community/economy hooks I mentioned (FFXIV goes for a very impersonal approach even outside of soloing and lacks a functional economy). It's hard to put it exact terms, but the pool of players you were jumping back into was constantly vitalized, with gear/food economy being kept alive for this reason, with several milestones existing outside the number next to "level" becoming higher (such as obtaining spells and gear, which is a complete non-issue in ARR, even the quest-based Artifact gear and exclusive job abilities - an explicit softening from the previous version of the game where they were milestones), with rules and demands being created and followed by players, and a general deeper shared experience throughout the server/game (Tam Tara Deepcroft surely isn't "the dunes", it is arguably not even a "real place" in this highly segmented virtual world). It's hard for me to see the activity of leveling other classes in ARR as valuable in itself and I think Yoshi-P has said as much as the game really beginning with endgame, that's just what the game is. Given how linear the endgame is (and thus how horizontal it must be for meaningful progression to exist), I think having multiple main classes is actually discouraged within the game design.

Neat to see that callback to that old adventurer party. Here I thought she would get a happy ending.

You missed Blackwing Lair, which released in July 2005.

The tank seems to be wearing two sets of tank gear I haven't seen before, not counting the new CT gear. Drops in the new dungeons I suppose? Maybe crafting.

If they're crafting gear, I don't think it'll be i100 gears though.

Oh yeah. That conjurer totally turned that head into an ahriman. Great.

I love this game, still leveling my white mage. The end game sounds very.. daunting/complicated. I hear tons of terms in the FC like myths, tomes, atma, zodac, turn, ct, alexandrite, novus, etc.

In other news the Titan fight was awesome, the tank got one shotted midway in the fight for some reason that escapes me (his hp just dropped completely). Still, we managed to finished the fight as I was healing and tanking the hits. First time I got all 3 player commendations :p

But I'd rather be playing this on a PS4 rather than my PS3 again.

If you have a PS3 version of the game you can upgrade to the PS4 version for free until December 31, 2014. This will deactivate your PS3 copy though, so you won't be able to play FFXIV: ARR on the PS3 anymore, but you'll have a digital copy of the PS4 version that you can play.

wait, is that the CNJ from Tam-Tara that was walking around with
her fiance's severed head
?

Wait. Are you for real? Can anyone confirm? :o

This looks great! Hopefully it'll be enough this time to keep my attention. 2.2 was so disappointing... I got the 3 month sub in preparation of it and only played a month of it.

I prob got kicked from the FC lol.

Careful, too much more and people might think you actually like this game.

Xande from Final Fantasy III: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Xande
A welcome addition, since he didn't make it to Dissidia.

Nope, although Shantotto has dropped by.

I do wonder if there are any Mamool Ja in Eorzea other than the one talking to a goblin in Limsa Lominsa though...

Also, is it me or was that
part of Dancing Mad
at the end of the trailer?...

Yep. Loads of them near Bronze Lake. Normal enemies, though, and a fate or two.

Yes, it's her. Edda.
Some time ago, Yoshida said we would see her again, and here she comes.

Taken from the official site:
When the guiding light of one's life is extinguished, it takes uncommon strength of spirit to clamber out of the black pits of despair. Those who want for resilience may yet be pulled up by a friend's helping hand. But what becomes of a brokenhearted maiden who has neither the strength nor the succor to overcome the darkness that threatens to consume her? The answer shall be revealed through the tragic tale that begins with the arrival of a single letter…

From that dungeon description and everyone's input, this person is definitely sounding like her a lot more. Wow. EDIT: And I found another place online that confirms that it is her. I guess this has been building up for a while? (I started in May this year)

Edda’s cameos were one of the most memorable events I’ve encountered in this game. And I’m a bit saddened by this state of affairs. Damn you Square Enix. I can’t wait for patch 2.3 now. I MUST KNOW.
