Final Fantasy: All The Bravest Review Thread

From people who've played it, how's the balancing in this?

Do you feel that it's balanced so that you'll die sometimes or often, or is it evenly balanced where if you have more characters, your chances of victory increase? I'm genuinely curious about this.

Edit: I find it odd that you enter battles with a randomly-chosen party, as if your skillsets don't seem to matter or whatever FF characters you choose (who could probably provide defensive or attack passive skills in other games) simply don't factor in battle outside of what animations they may execute.

I have to say, though, that I like the battle backgrounds--it's interesting to see the 3D FFs in 2D like that.

Yes it does lead to some frustration when I get a bunch of warriors and black mages who are far weaker then my summoners, onion knights but generally you get a good enough balance of good classes. Having more characters is important because when you get most of the gear and are at level 99 those extra attacks add up fast.

Im level 60, and I think your max. party is of 32 members but you keep receiving new classes. They enter randomly in your party btw. Each battle has four stages with different monsters. In each of these four the dead characters are replaced randomly by other classes. The premium characters you bought are fixed though. The fact that you cant choose which characters you include help balacing things. I died a few times in the seventh stage, so I recommend grinding a bit before facing the bosses. I think its pretty well balanced.

40 is the max, but you can only get it by using social media facebook/twitter in game, you can unlock 1 slot a day every 24 hours. It really does go a long way having even one more attacker in terms of killing bosses before they wipe you.

This thread is perhaps more suited to Off-topic form. It's not really a game, and more like a nostalgic wallet draining app.

Chaos Rings got a 9 and Chaos Rings 2 an 8.5 (standards had went up by that point).

TWEWY iOS got a 9.5.

Yeah, well, these are really great games that actually have a lot of content with deep gameplay (especially TWEWY), and compared to these games All The Braves is indeed a 2.5, but it was not even meant to be in the same league with these games. And that is why I wonder why these reviews even were made!?

BTW: All The Bravest currently holds a 3.5/5 rating on the German App Store. So apperently a lot of people don't even think the game is thaaaat bad.

People really should not defend this game in any meaningful way (sans the nice sprite art and funny localization). It is a cash grab at its worst.

You don't even get to pick which characters you buy. With real honest-to-goodness I-should-have-bought-a-Coke money.

In this day and age it isn't even I-should-have-bought-a-Coke money, it's money you could spend on several games on iOS, Android, Steam Sales, bundles or on someone's record on bandcamp or something.

If these reviews prevent at least one poor soul from getting suckered into buying this pos, they were worth it.

I also feel like I gave a fairly solid explanation in my last reply. It used to be that Square-Enix Japan made games with "Final Fantasy" in the title were worth paying attention to. It's important that people are informed that this is not the case with this game, so they can avoid it accordingly.

Someone should make a flash replica of the game and release it for free.
I'm pretty sure I've played better games with ripped 8-bit and 16bit FF sprites. On Newgrounds. For free. 10 years ago.

That said, I reiterate that the idea of big party battles with 2D sprites from all previous FF titles is a great premise for a cool little thing. Nothing a game designer couldn't turn into a good time. Not that anyone at S-E would see the need to fix something that's obviously a success without having effort or thought put into it.

I'm generally hesitant to blame specific FF problems with certain staff members (aside from toriyama), but it's pretty clear that this is a colossal failure from management. It's frustrating to see a company that could output high quality titles and has talent completely fail in any way that could make use of it. And depressing that this is one of the few companies that seems to be able to produce console jrpgs these days.

The pricing difference is usually reflected in the review though.

Let's compare recent IGN reviews at this price point for example:

FF:ATB ($4): 2.5
Joe Danger Touch ($3): 9.1
Pudding Monsters ($1): 7.3
Mutant Mudds ($1): 9.1
Monster's Inc. Run ($1): 7.7

They're not comparing this game directly to TWEWY.

I thought of a way to fix and make this an actual game.

Different swipes made with a finger will do a specific action. If someone swipes a "U" with their finger on the screen, the black magic group will cast a fire spell. Tapping the screen twice could make the fighter class attack, swiping a vertical line could mean all the units do a normal attack.

Let the player create or use stock swiping gestures to give direction to specific classes. For example, the player creates an "H" swipe that would make the white magic group heal another specific group of units, or even heal the entire party but the entire party would receive less HP.

So something like that and remove every automatic function of the game and maybe it could be called a videogame.

WHY EVEN REVIEWING IT?
Well...
This is pretty disgusting. A game with absolutely no substance with this type of model. But aren't a whole lot of mobile/social games based around this exact same model?
... I think this highlights part of it. Most of us who are Square Enix fans, as in "maybe we like the Eidos stuff but we want Square Enix" are disappointed at how little we've seen from them lately, and while we're hoping they announce an FF we can really get excited for or hoping stuff like FF Type-0 and Bravely Default get localized they go and release... this. A cheap cash in on fanservice attached to a "game" model that's utterly repugnant, potentially representing just how badly SE's fallen if you want to look deeply into it and what other companies may consider. Reviewing this seems to serve mainly as a warning to others and to send a signal to SE that this is not acceptable. Hopefully either this type of "game" goes nowhere or crashes spectacularly, or at least it stays on the side and doesn't undermine more legitimate games.

Oh man, you're over here with "the good old days" rant too eh. I agree. Crystal Chronicles and Dirge of Cerberus are classics.

Completely in line with what I expect from phone gaming.

what kinds of phone games are you buying for 4 bucks?! you should expect more, bro

i mean even within the SE phone game releases, you have FF3 and FF tactics and all sorts of great things

i mean shit, even nokia had snake and that was free

Square-Enix's new motto: "Hey we could be worse!"

Yeah, and who could blame them. The game was not even developed by SE directly, so this is probably a classic case of licensing out a franchise and cashing in on it.

If these reviews prevent at least one poor soul from getting suckered into buying this pos, they were worth it.

Yeah, well, that depends, since there apperently a lot of people who actually like it and think it was worth at least the 4$. And from some of the comments that I read in this thread, I am actually afraid that some users here will buy the game now just to see how bad it is. lol

They were games that involved actual gameplay, so yeah they are classics compared to this drivel they're trying to pass off as a FF title.

EDIT:- Beaten by Emitan, Derrick01, and MormaPope

This would actually make too much sense for them to implement. It would give meaning to your swipes.

Zero, this is my first iphone purchase ever. I guess I'm still immune to the perceived value of games on this (terrible) gaming platform. Most games are $1 no? And those are shit. So $3 extra for something from Square. No one here is new to Square tax. Hell, a costume in 13-2 is $3. I also remember duckroll going crazy for Dissidia costumes. How much are those? $4 for a few hours of FF collectathon and sprite loving? I can afford it.

If the core of your argument is that FF side projects were always shit, at least I got you to agree that this game is shit as well.

(For the record, I think both of the games you mentioned were bad, yet infinitely more worthwhile than this pos).

Compared to this and their output this generation? Yeah they were.

At least those spin offs didn't use the same cast of characters that have the redeeming qualities of a public toilet seat.

But those games weren't cash grabs using the FF name? Hell, even Tactics employed that..tactic.

you have to either wait for your characters to revive (three minutes per character, or up to two hours), exit the battle and try again (pointless, since again, there's no strategy), or pay Square Enix real money to revive your party.
There's one more. Every three hours you get a fever, and every two hours your whole party gets restored, even in battle. So if you're fighting some hard enemy and you're down to two-three characters, just press the Home button, open the Settings (your phone settings) and fast forward your current clock by 3 hours. Now open ATB again, you will have a full party again, with Fever ready to go. No need to buy the hourglass.

One more trick - this also works for the social media sharing, so you can share a post on Facebook (and when sharing you can choose to make it visible to you only, so not to spam your friends), fast forward a day, and share again for another character. Rinse and repeat.

You know there's a 72 page thread on another game available on ios right here on the front page? :D

And there are quite a few good games for ios/android out there, you just need to look for them. King of Dragon Pass and Knights of Pen and Paper to name two off the top of my head.

edit: ^^^^^^^ Ahahahaha what a garbage 'game'.

No no, you don't understand.

It's not supposed to be strategic. Or interesting. Or good.

It's just a timewaster. Like scratching your ass and smelling your finger. Or picking your nose and eating the booger. Just something to waste a couple seconds at a traffic light, you know?

The problem is that we're talking about Final fucking Fantasy, a name that once meant something, that was once one of the most prestigious RPG series in gaming. But with each and every passing year it feels like Square gives less and less of a crap, instead focusing on abusing the name and putting it everywhere, every time, in order to get more money. I mean, yes, the goal of a company is to make money, I get that. But for fuck's sake, when you own one of the biggest and most respected franchises ever made, aren't you supposed to try to keep it that way?

Obviously SE is not the only company doing this. But it doesn't mean it's right.

It's a few dollars of a phone game, of course it's shit. The whole crux of my argument is why is Square being singled out for putting out a game in a marketplace of equally bad games with equally dumb dlc. Because you guys "expect more" from Square? C'mon now, time to grow up, guys. Let them generate some revenue like everyone else. Calling the game shallow or bad is fine, it's the weird sainthood bestowed on Square that weirds me out. Like they haven't been a slimey company for YEARS lol.

Surprised to see people defending this game and saying "oh, it's just an iOS game so...."

But $4

No moving through overlands or dungeons. You just hop from one battle to the next, rubbing your fingers across the screen and that's it? How can anyone defend this? There's no strategy, no exploration.... nothing.

Wanna a decent free or cheap JRPG type of game with (optional) IAP, play the Zenonia games.

Using the fact it's a mobile game for terrible "gameplay" is a sorry excuse.

The mental gymnastics you are going through to justify your stupid purchase is very fun to watch.

You've already admitted you don't play phone games so you don't have any frame of reference.

Man, I don't even know why we're arguing anymore.

We're on the same side after all.

The difference being all phone games are shit, but plenty buy them. You're on neogaf dude..you're surrounded by people who play shit games and still enjoy them.

This game costs 4x as much as the average game on the platform. With this business model you would expect the game to be FREE.

And why are you defending it when you are calling it shit? Why are you comparing it to phone games you admit that you have never played?

Sounds like lame excuses. I can't tell if you're defending them or this game or what.

No moving through overlands or dungeons. You just hop from one battle to the next, rubbing your fingers across the screen and that's it?
It's not an RPG. And moving through overlands and dungeons on a touch screen is exactly what got me to quickly abandon playing the shitty 16bit ioS FF that SE created.

The game is full of fanservice, and $4 was worth the price of admission to play an ioS collectathon.

As long as you realise and concede that all the bravest is a shit game, I don't think we have anything to argue about.

I'm not here to defend Square Enix or the good Final Fantasy games of the past, just to give my opinion on this pos and call out the crazies who think this cynical cash grab is not shit.

I can't reply fast enough on my phone lol, I listed my thoughts on mobile gaming in the
other thread. I find the control scheme of phones kills gaming. This game doesn't have that issue. You tap, it works. In that sense it's much better than ios Mana or SF4 or whatever other game. Anything else that works is just the same control scheme, tap or swipe.

I'm not justifying anything lol. It's $4 dollars lol. Guys. It's $4. It's literally nothing. So are $1 games. They're pennies. This is Square though. They've always made their own rules.
