Final Fantasy IV Compilation Coming to PSP

1, 2, and 4 had earlier ports, but 3's was cancelled due to the death of the Wonderswan. They can't build off existing code because it exists as NES ASM at best, and they can't build off 3 DS because it was a remake.
 
I haven't completed FFIV yet so yay.
 
I'm all for a FFIV remake that doesn't look like it was made for the most primitive 3D system imaginable.

The only reason I didn't pick up the DS version is because it was so darn ugly.

I truly find it hilarious that DS gets so many 3D remakes and new iterations, yet PSP looks to be the 2D machine of this generation.

i wish they would include the cgi movies from the ds version,they were such a waste with this low bitrate and fps,but the high res versions will probably rot in squares archives forever

Don't worry, the inevitable 3DS compilation will solve that problem. Every major handheld needs a version of FFIV before it dies.

Hahaha I never thought about it, but you're right! So many 2D Square remakes on PSP and 3D Square-Enix remakes on DS, what the fuck were they thinking?

Even Atlus generally goes 2D on PSP remakes, what's the deal?

-Glitch Free
-All FFIV Advance Extras (New Dungeons, Adjustable Final Party, Beastiary, etc.)
-All Additional FFIV DS Story Scenes
-Enhanced Audio Quality
-Tales for All Original FFIV Characters
-Upgrade "Unfinished" Characters (Harley's Blue Magic, FuSoYa's Status Portrait, etc.)
-More Original TAY Content (ie. More Original Bosses)
-Selectable Graphic Filter (Not likely.)
 
FFIV has a pretty absurd amount of ports/remakes. SNES original, two versions on PSX, Wonderswan, GBA, DS, PSP, Virtual Console, Japanese cell phones. Maybe some others I'm forgetting. Outside of the original game, it has probably appeared on more platforms than any other FF game. I wonder why it gets so much more love over FFVI from Square.

You mean FFIII (FFVI) Remake? Sure, I'd love that.
 
Hmm I wouldn't mind playing a new version of FFIV if is was significantly enhanced. But I couldn't stand playing TAY (I never got past the first initial chapter). It was just a really sloppy looking fan-game that looked like it was made with RPG Maker. If they could improve it and polish it, I'm so in.
 
I am such a sucker for FF IV and will probably be getting this day 1. I wasn't too impressed by The After Years through. It just felt incredibly cheap to me. Either way I will be closely watching this games progress.

Being the first SNES game in the series helped, I'll bet, plus SE going ahead with the WSC port made for easy future ports.

Guess V and VI have just been a little out of reach outside of FF Anthology for the PSX and the GBA updates all of this time. Hopefully that'll change with the 3DS.

What's this about Harley intended to be a Blue Mage? I'm all ears.

I also wouldn't mind the extra DS items, NG+ and augments included. And definitely including a non-limited inventory.
 
The after years sucks. But maybe this means that we'll finally get a definitive English version of FF4 :D

They'll probably ruin it by using the DS version of the soundtrack I bet. SNES music or bust!

Ignoring the 3D aspect the 3DS top screen is 400x240, which is a step down from PSP's 480x272, but by more like 26% than 40%. Unless for some reason we're putting FFIV The Imaginary on the bottom screen.

Pretty much this. If I had to endure those graphics in TAY, I'd rather play it in a TV than a portable device.

30$ for the (hopefully) definitive version of both games seems like a steal to me.

I quite enjoyed The After Years, and it sold quite well. It's not very popular here though.

There are definitely some flaws to it, but it's really interesting to see how the character's lives have changed since the initial events in FFIV. There are some neat connections between the original cast and the new characters, and the band system and challenge dungeons are quite cool IMO.

It does rely heavily on assets from previous FF games though, especially in the boss department. Like many bonus/expanded dungeons from past FF ports, the "new" bosses mainly consist of palette swaps and cameos. They try to work this into the story, but it comes off a bit lazy.

Some of the Tales have some structuring problems, and some of the new characters feel underdeveloped, but these are things that can be addressed in this version.

The interface and font are in need of a lot of polish too, but with the graphical upgrades this version will has, that should be properly dealt with.

But if you are a fan of FFIV, there should be more than enough in TAY to keep you interested. Especially if you remember that it was originally an episodic mobile game. This enhanced port seems like the perfect opportunity for the game to reach it's full potential.
 
They won't force you to play FFIV before letting you play The After Years, right? I just can't trust Square...

But hey, if you can play The After Years directly and it makes it to Europe in UMD form, I could see me buying it (day 1 if its a special edition).

PSP has 36% more than 3DS. 3DS has 26% less than PSP. The magic of numbers~
 
Just saw the scans - it definitely looks like FFI and FFII Anniversary, but the magic graphics have been substantially improved. Also looks much better than the Wiiware FFIV After Years graphics.
