Final Fantasy IV Compilation Coming to PSP

God, what is with Square's obsession with FFIV? Love the game, but goddamn it's like it gets re-released every other year. VI is a good game too Square. It even sold more in the west than IV! Maybe you should, ya know, re-release that, or perhaps a remake?

I have yet to play the remake ugh, but will probably get this as I love ff4 and curious to play the after years.
I played a few hours, I don't care for it. I'll save my next playthru for this version, assuming it comes out in English.

They're going to squeeze that rock until it's dry.

Oh, and guys, the DS Remake is actually pretty awesome (even if it's hard as balls sometimes).

I was only able to beat the final boss because of
Rydia's Phoenix Augment.
Biggest life saver ever!

FFIV has a pretty absurd amount of ports/remakes. SNES original, two versions on PSX, Wonderswan, GBA, DS, PSP, Virtual Console, Japanese cell phones. Maybe some others I'm forgetting. Outside of the original game, it has probably appeared on more platforms than any other FF game. I wonder why it gets so much more love over FFVI from Square.

Because it's the best one.

*stands tall*

I agree, just because IV is the best one doesn't mean VI shouldn't get the DS treatment too GODDAMNIT

Gameplay was really improved over the original game. Matrix did a great job taking what they learned from the FF3 remake and making better improvements with FF4.

Completely agree. I'd love it if the PSP was getting the 3D FFIV, but I'm more than happy with 2D. FFIV also has the best ost in the series imo.

Nice, even if The After Years was a total shitfest. Still wish we'd get a 2D remake of FF3 (with more than 3 onscreen enemies at a time :P), and still waiting for news of an FF5 remake, as that is the best one.

Man, after IVr kicked my ass, I don't know if I can go back to regular old IV. Will consider it.

After Years doesn't entice me at all though.

Still worth it for the soundtrack alone, hopefully they use the DS remade music, or even better an option to switch between both versions to please everyone

Completely pointless port/remake/whatever. I wasn't going to buy FFIVDS until they promised gameplay overhauls, so this will have to promise some sort of matching change for me to consider it.

They won't force you to play FFIV before letting you play The After Years, right?

I bet they will. I wouldn't be surprised if they do it like the Soul of Rebirth in the GBA and PSP versions of Final Fantasy II. In those, you had to play through the main game and then you could do the Soul of Rebirth. After finishing the Soul of Rebirth, you could choose to start a new game of the main game or Soul of Rebirth.

You can get After Years separately already - for 3700 Reggies on WiiWare. (800 + 7x300 + 800). I assume you're looking for a portable version, though?

I am both intrigued and confused by the IV/IV soundtrack superfans.
Meanwhile, FFV's OST is seriously underrated. Sure it's not as good as VI's, but it's got some really, really great tracks.

Interesting platform choice.
I'm honestly surprised that they haven't adapted After Years to DSiWare.
Here's hoping that at least they include some of the new content introduced into the GBA port and pulled out of the DS remake. Not to mention the expanded script/sequences of the DS remake.

I wonder if it's too much to hope to eventually get most of the series on one system in english.
GBA I, II, IV, V, VI
DS III, IV
PSP I, II, IV (VII, VIII, IX on PSN)
Just finish it on one of them.

After Years will work much, much better all packaged together.

Its biggest problem was that the chapter ends were often completely arbitrary. Some chapters (Edge's, Edwards) ended in nice boss battles that felt like a genuine end or break to the story arc, but most ended in seemingly random spots that made no sense. Being able to jump right from one chapter to the next will be nice. I wonder what they'll do with all the bonus dungeons, though.

There's also too much reused music, but the odds of SE fixing that are slim.

It should be good deal... when it goes on sale for $20 or less.

Well the soundtrack is really good.

Boss theme (worked nicely during Fabul invasion)

Final boss battle...IN SPACE

An oppresive force roaming the skies

Overworld

Underground Overworld

Climbing a mountain

Moon overworld, complete with creepy Mars face

Heading to the moon's core (so awesome)

Also how many JRPGs have you wandering on the moon and actually manage to deliver an alien/isolated feel while doing so?

How weird, FF/FF2 and FF4 but not FF3. Does Nintendo hold something in regards to the third game?

Maybe the fact that FF3 is terrible regardless of which version? The remake made an already boring and tedious game that much more boring and tedious.

I am totally on board for this, though. FFIV is my favorite FF, I was just talking about possibly getting TAY finally, and then I see this announced. Greatly pleased.

Wish List:

-Glitch Free
-All FFIV Advance Extras (New Dungeons, Adjustable Final Party, Beastiary, etc.)
-All Additional FFIV DS Story Scenes
-Enhanced Audio Quality
-Tales for All Original FFIV Characters
-Upgrade "Unfinished" Characters (Harley's Blue Magic, FuSoYa's Status Portrait, etc.)
-More Original TAY Content (ie. More Original Bosses)
-Selectable Graphic Filter (Not likely.)

Yeah, they should really do this. Harley is the shittiest FF character ever as-is.

After checking out some videos of the PSP FF I and II, I could see myself buying IV PSP if it looks like that. Looks like super detailed versions of the SD FF characters on the FFV box art.

I'm going to need to a psp soon. This, tactics ogre, and for some reason, my psp copy of Valkyrie Profile need to be played.

Never played FFIV, apart from the tutorial which bored me to tears. But I've always heard good things about it.

Maybe I'll pick this up if it hits PSN.

IV had a tutorial?

EDIT: I really liked the DS version's upgraded music, voice acting, and additional content/additions to the story that patched plotholes.

Actually kinda liked the 3d graphics since they were good representations of Amano art.

I will quote this but avoid commenting because I don't want to start list wars. But I'm quoting it.

But will Square Enix knock it off and give us official, definitive versions of EVERYTHING just once? They botched the Advance series for various reasons (though it's still obviously the system of choice), they messed with the PSP games, they gave Matrix the DS games. It's like they're trying to encourage me to buy every title to find the perfect iteration of each!

Yes. Plus the pricing for the whole thing on WiiWare doesn't seem agreeable to me ... and fridge management issues, too. The full bundle on PSP can't cost more than 40€ day one, probably more like 30€. And that still seems like a lot for what I've seen of the game.
The whole reason why I'm asking for a separation of the bits is to get a lower price, so ...

Not to hate, but if this thing stays too expensive for too long, knowing myself, I'll shuffle it to the end of my to-get list and eventually forget about it. Again, I'm not asking to get the full package for super cheap, just the one half of it I haven't played for something around or slightly above half the price of a regular PSP release.

The After Years was really a POS sequel.
I was soooooooooooooooooooo disappointed with it.

Seriously, don't play it or it'll mess up your loving memories of the original FF IV characters and lore.

It's really that bad.

Original FF IV is a god-tier game though.

Glad it's not not a port of the DS version; I prefer the sprites to ugly 3D.

Man I'd much rather have it been a cleaned up version of the DS game -_-

Pretty much this. If I had to endure those graphics in TAY, I'd rather play it in a TV than a portable device.

I think you mean the other way around, considering TAY was originally a cell phone game. The map and field graphics looked fine, but the sprites looked really squished and lacked animation. They looked like bad fan edits of FF6 sprites (as I understand it was the same "artist").
