Final Fantasy IV Compilation Coming to PSP

The After Years was really a POS sequel.
I was soooooooooooooooooooo disappointed with it.

Seriously, don't play it or it'll mess up your loving memories of the original FF IV characters and lore.

It's really that bad.

Original FF IV is a god-tier game though.

Did you play through the whole thing or just the first chapter? It's quite good as a whole. The endgame content is pretty nice.

Oh man, another remake of the sort?

Day 1. :D I love me some more FFIV. A shame they haven't done this with FFVI. The game deserves a remake.

Played the whole thing, and the
alien-girl-clone thing throughout the game was just badly executed and stupid
. Also hated how they reused boss sprites from other games in the final dungeon. It's like they were all badly copy-pasted.

Someone in thread said it played like a bad fan game, and he's right.
Even with some polish, I wouldn't recommend it because of the story.

Would I be called insane if I were to say that FF4 DS is already the definitive version, and even the addition of The After Years doesn't make this worthwhile over FF4 DS? I don't know if how highly I regard FF4 DS is unusual or not.

FF4 DS is the best version (by like, ginormous leaps and bounds) but it's not really the "definitive" version because it's practically a different game than FF4 classic. If people want to play through the original vision of the game (and I can certainly see reasons one might want to) there's no good single edition to pick: the real game never came out in the US on the SNES, the PSX version is crapola, and the GBA version has lovely touched-up graphics but has lots of (US version) or some (EU version) problematic bugs that worsen the experience.

I'm with you, actually, on FFIVDS being the definitive version of the game. As much as I love the game in all of its iterations, so much of it seems more realized on the DS version story and gameplay-wise.

Frankly, I don't care if it's a PSP port of FFIVDS (running higher resolution, etc) or a pseudo-remake like the previous 2 FF ports were, I'm getting it regardless. It would be lovely to get a mishmash to make a one, true FFIV remake that combines all of the good from each version, but that may be asking for a golden goose egg.

In an odd way, I consider both the GBA and DS versions definitive. The GBA one is the best version of the original game, cleaned up graphics and localization and some great added content. The DS one is like a complete reimaging, almost a completely new game using the original as a base. Basically, we get to have our cake and eat it too! Both versions have their merits, I think.

The After Years, on the other hand, is sort of half-assed.

The music sounds muffled... the sound effects are even worse..... + load times.

Yes, I definitely agree with this. (I just wish the GBA version I bought on day one wasn't filled with terrible bugs. :lol )

The Playstation version of IV is significantly better than the Playstation versions of V and VI but that does not make it good. Load times every time you switch maps or end a battle (ISTR IV at least eliminated the 5-second load to enter the main menu that V and VI had), sound problems, and BC problems all make it a poor choice compared to the other ways to play the game, even with the problems that those versions also have.

Considering Final Fantasy IV is my all time favorite Final Fantasy, and that I also thoroughly enjoyed The After Years, this is amazing news.

I feel the same. I played only a few episodes into After Years, but I will be able to blaze through it like this much faster.

I've played through it twice, bonus content included.. maybe I'm misremembering but the ATB bug was more of a slight irritant that you just got used to after a little while over being horrible.

Some people were bothered by the few seconds of load times here and there, but I never really noticed them.

Isn't IV the one that was bundled with Chrono Trigger ? I remember reading things about how awful the load times were for the PS1 version of CT at least.

Maybe the fact that FF3 is terrible regardless of which version? The remake made an already boring and tedious game that much more boring and tedious.

It was the coding. FFIII for the WSC was sacked, and the code for FFIII Famicom only exists in ASM.

Day one :D FF4DS was disappointing and I liked the original SNES version a lot more.
I wanted to play TAY anyway but it wasn't worth 40 € on WiiWare.

If the soundtrack has the same quality as the remastered FFI&II's soundtracks, it'd be godly.

Despite buying FF4a on day one I didn't actually play far enough to get used to the bug. I'll freely admit that my awareness that something was wrong almost certainly caused me more problems than the actual legitimate significance of the bug itself. :lol

Am I alone in wanting this to basically be FFIVDS w/ FF I&II PSP style graphics? I think that would be perfect. All the gameplay changes in FFIVDS made it by far the best version of the game to me, so I would love to play that with the "new" visual style of this port, plus I can finally get to playing TAY as well.

The battle felt slower for me in the DS version and it basically killed the game :/
The rest was good though.
I still want a remake that looks like the DS opening :D

I'd take that over the same game with updated sprites. The Augment system was great.

What does that have to do with FFIII being boring as hell and having the pacing of a snail on fly paper?

This is basically what I want as well. The Augments system in the DS version, not to mention the more-fleshed out elements in the storyline, were great additions.

If the PSP version were simply the DS version with higher-res FFI & FFII sprite work, not to mention The After getting a sprite overhaul, I'll be buying this Day One.

What's this about Harley intended to be a Blue Mage? I'm all ears.
Apparently, there is some evidence in the source code that she was originally intended to be a Blue Mage. Considering all the funky monster attacks in IV, that would be really cool if they could implement that.

Or, at least buff up her stats and Gil Toss. (Give her some more bands too.) I really like her character design and I used her regardless, but she did get the short end of the stick in the abilities department.

This is true, for all the waiting, FF3 is a pretty mediocre game, and among the weaker of the series.

I like FF1, but the SNES generation is when they really got good.

Nice, I wasn't expecting remade art!

Glad they kept it old school, just higher resolution. Does it say if After Years is getting the same treatment?

Well, that battle pic is from The After Years if that answers your question :D

I approve of the remade art. It helps take away from the you've just modified the FFVI sprties vibe that After Years vibe after years gave off although you could argue its replaced that feeling with FFI and II :lol . Shame the after years has more drastic issues to fix than its graphics.

What's this, by the way?
Good lord what have you found. The 2008 copyright makes me think the DS port is getting a cellphone port...yay?
fakedit:beaten but I was right.

Those screens do look nice. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting them to look like, but they look better than I thought they would.

I wonder what they'll do with the music.

Nice! It actually looks like a decent upgrade. I'm sure the sprites are redrawn in Korea or whatever, but I don't care. FF1 and 2 PSP looked great.

Perhaps, but FF1 and FF2 for PSP had battle graphics based on original sketches by Amano and it showed. Hopefully, they will be restored with as much care for this release, whether by Japanese, Koreans or Russian artists.
