Final Fantasy Type-0 Fantranslation Project - Operation DOOMTRAIN

Though this is possibly the best title in the entire PSP catalog, its release date, being at the end of the console’s lifetime, made it impossible for western players to enjoy it. Claiming ”marketing reasons”, Square Enix never released and English localized version. Rumors say they even canceled an almost complete localization after years of work.

Despite being a portable game, its quality encouraged players around the world to start signing online petitions for the game to be released outside Japan; this is the case of both Operation Suzaku, and Project Crystallis. However, Square Enix remains silent and nowadays the possibilities of an official USA release for the PSP are minimal.

This is why I’m working with Sky and others on this fan translation project, so all Final Fantasy fans can enjoy this wonderful game. It all started on 01/01/2013 but since then, some skilled Japanese translators and proofreaders as well as myself have joined in this endeavor.

The objective is a simple yet arduous one. To bring a high quality translation for those who bought the system to play this great game. Sky, our main programmer also plans to add some enhancements such as UMD Merging, or faster loading times without data installation.

------------------------

There is another update from the team, and it's the fact that we'd like to add new members to the team. More specifically, we need capable translators fluent in both Japanese and English, with free time to help us to translate the game's text. This is due to the fact that we are currently a small team (at least its active part) and we think new additions will help us to archive a completion date sooner.

Since the romhacking part of the project is perfectly stable, translators only have to edit a txt file, changing its language, from Japanese to English. It would also help us if candidates have knowledge about the Final Fantasy saga, or the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology; but this is not a requirement.

Those of you interested, feel free to add Sky on Skype (SkyBladeCloud), He will send a short example of how the game's text look like (kind of a test) and if you can help us, you'll be part of the team!

Sorry for the crappy OP. First time doing this sort of thing.

Shhh, keep it on the DL so Square doesn't get wind of it and dash our hopes and dreams. xD

"Best title in the entire PSP catalog"? Really? Or is that an exaggeration?

Doomtrain?

Anyway, I've always been interested in this, in the back of my head. I'll play it when this is done. : 0

I hope you guys are able to pull this off. I've always wanted to know if this game is legit or if it's a lot of hype just because it never came out here.

Best of luck! Hopefully it doesn't take too too long but I'll play it whenever it's available.

Been watching this since day one. One of the few games I really want to play. Good luck, hopefully you get some active translators.

Still pissed at Square for not localizing this one. But I'm happy that there's a fan translation at least. Keep up the good work guys, all of us FF fans appreciate it so much.

IIRC they technically "localized" it (I think they even finished recording the english dub) but they just didn't bring it over here.

What's to stop SE from pulling the ol' cease and desist bullshit? They tend to be pretty trigger-happy on that front.

There are already fantranslations of older Squaresoft games (and even more recent ones like Front Mission 5), so I don't know what kind of trigger-happy you're talking about.

Have a game company ever C&D a fantranslation? I don't think so.

If that's true that's even worse. :(

Time to commence Operation Hack Into Square's Database!
Yeah, pretty much. I recall reading a SE employee saying that they don't want to get it out of Japan for a specific reason, and that it's a silly reason, but he couldn't say what it was.
I hope someday someone will spill the beans.

Google actually comes up with a single result (Da Capo III), but it was because there was an official localization and the company didn't want the fan translation to undercut it.

That's the only instance I've ever seen.

Is it even legally possible to do so?

Why wouldn't it? The author owns the copyright to the text you translate with the intent of publishing it without his consent. Shouldn't be much of a problem to C&D such a translation project if anyone cared enough to do so.

Pretty insane that they'd throw away 300K+ sales (judging from how Crisis Core sold) just to get XIII-2 and ARR out the door. Crazy priorities

I guess so, since it's a derivative work.

Probably some random copyrighted song that isn't allowed outside of Japan and they are too lazy to take it out of the game.

Technically, SE does own the script to the game, but a C&D on a fantranslation would be pretty frivolous. It's not like Operation Doomtrain is the one patching the game and releasing the patched ROM to the public.

Very hopeful this turns out well. It's such a big undertaking and FF fans will be eternally grateful :D

There is a song that's used more than once in the game Square-Enix doesn't own the rights to, that's likely one of the issues.

If the reason was because of some dumb song, then that is a really dumb reason.

I mean, this game could have come out as a Vita title, all they had to do was up-res it and it would have been a really solid title if they didn't wanna do a PSP release.

Shame all that work localizing it went to waste.

The song you are referring to is "Zero" by the band Bump of Chicken I believe. I dunno if there were any conflicts and if so I imagine it wouldn't be difficult to re-record some lines to hum a instrumental version. Then again what do I know right?

Type 0's lack of localization is quite a mystery. I already know part of the reason is due to being placed on the Vampire platform that is the PSP. Dead in the west but was still alive in Japan.

Godspeed gentlemen!

I saw quite a few copies of this for a few 1000 yen in Japan... Didn't pick one up, but I'll grab it the next time I go.

You know, I'm not even an FFXIII hater, I've thought both games were pretty decent despite their flaws, but I think it's incredibly shitty that we're getting three of those, but the actual promising/unique Final Fantasy game is obviously such a damn burden to get out to other territories.

I bet that square will make a localization based on the fan one once finished.
Anyway there's no way i'll support square's bullshit policy buying a japanese copy of type 0.

y'all have my deepest gratitude for your efforts. would love to have the chance to play this game (despite se's determination to see to it that i never will)...
