Maybe SE will do cross platform PS3/NGP development for their future big budget games. That way they cater to both Japan and the west.

I can see that happening with a lot of things, actually.

But wouldn't porting the games "gimp" the (video and sound) quality of the games though?

no more than the 360 gimped the PS3's pretty 1080p videos.

Why would it? If you care about video and sound, why not just get the PS3 version? Did the 360 version of FF XIII affect the PS3 version?

They're on identical specs though... developing a game on PSP and then porting it over to PS3 wouldn't be the same...?

For the first time in a long time Square has pleased me.

the problem is, knowing Square, next-generation portable development isn't looking to be dramatically cheaper than console development thanks to a mix of higher budgets, more complex tech and smaller audiences in Western territories.

If they were to make another game on the scale of FFVI? I'm all for it. I just think that nowadays they're either too proud or too stuck in the cogs of a giant machine they can't stop to actually not go all out and make pretty art-assets and cutscenes when they set their giant A-team into motion.
I think the expectations are so different on portables though. SE could remake FFVII for the consoles in a reasonable amount of time and budget if they literally made it the same, static environments but actually real-time 3D, which I think is actually what people would want. But they think it needs to like FFXIII but the size of VII, which is just impossible at this point.

I think based on the way people play portables and the kind of games you get on them, they could go back without losing face or whatever, and I think they should.

Same for Versus.
I don't think many people are saying Versus is good though, just that it could be, that's a massive difference.

Also, I've played Crisis Core and some of The 3rd Birthday, I have no reason to think Tabata will deliver this time. He might, but I think it could very easily suck.

I thought we were talking about NGP. :O
Ugh, I'm tired. Think I'll be heading to bed any sec now...

NGP, not PSP. Sony has designed the NGP in a way that PS3 devs can easily port their games over. There is an example of a PS3 retail game ported to the NGP in about a week and running at full speed.

Fine. Type-0 is looking like quality. Happy?

Though by your logic I could note that the same team that worked on KH2(more like Krapdum Hearts 2 hooooooooooooo!) is working on Versus and, thus, all hope is lost for anything other than the graphics and camera being good.

One thing I kind of disagree with and maybe alone, is people using past games as a reference to how Versus will be. On one hand it makes sense since that's all you have to look at right now, but I don't know, I'd like to think they realize this is fucking final fantasy.

I also constantly hear "the KH team", and there are many of them involved, but if you watch that long trailer that SE put out on DVD a while back, most of the staff credited are from FFVII/VIII I believe.

A main line FF would be on NGP and PS3 , there's now way that it would ever be on portable only.
DQ sells allot in Japan but WW the rest of sales are not as high it's the reason why FF is still SE biggest IP.
MGS PW is a great game but it sold much less than any MGS by a huge amount .
I don't think any of the portable KH out sold KH2 up to now , also you can charge way more for a console game than portable all over the world .
A $60 portable game not going to work in the US or EU.

Yes. I do agree true quality portable games get the shaft compared to mediocre console counterparts just because they aren't on consoles. And it makes no sense.

It seems that Versus will redeem SE for the abomination that was XIII and everything will finally be forgiven.Everything Nomura said in his last interview sounds amazing!

The last time i've been so hyped for a FF game was before FFX came out. It's one of the few times that when i say "i can't wait for this game" i really, really mean it.

Nomura's pretty boy designs to tend to look very similar to each other, don't deny it.
I'm here to back you up bro. He reuses sparkle assets and before any of you question, I'm the up most expert here on it.

I don't get the want to make games portable. I have to wonder, how many of you are actually playing them outside? I mean most North Americans have cars or don't have long commutes if using the bus/skytrain?

So for those of you that play their DS and PSP at home a lot, why do you want that instead of console games?

And for those that want them portable, do you actually play serious long RPGs on the train or bus? I mean isn't quick pick up and play games meant for portables? Do you want to get rid of that 20 minute boss battle because you don't have enough time on the commute?

Erm, it's the KH team. Most of the KH team are also people who worked on FFVII and FFVIII. Do you think they came from a vacuum? That they appeared out of nowhere and joined the company just to make KH? No. VersusXIII's team is pretty much KH and KH2's team 1:1 with the additional of 1 guy out of like almost 20 people. Don't even try to argue this, because you will be proven wrong.

And you know who that 1 guy is? He's the map director of FFX and FFXIII, and the director of DoCFFVII. :)

Well, that's not what is suggested in the official trailer, maybe you do know better though.

And even if that were the case, you're saying they're FF staff who are also KH staff plus one FF staff, which makes more FF staff than KH staff, which is what I said.

Although having checked the trailer, it has the exact same amount of FF staff to KH staff. There are a number of people who only worked on FF and only worked on KH.
