Final Fantasy VI interview details scrapped events, characters

Should have scrapped the whole game.

I'd rather they don't remake it if these are the options

I want them to redo all of the visuals of the game, but keep the general look and feel of the game intact.

Unfortunately, for Square it's either shitty filtered sprites, or overblown modern action RPG bullshit.

FFIVDS was a good compromise, just need to do something like that that holds up at higher resolutions.

There were already 14 freaking party members in the game, I don't think we needed another one.

We did though. To this day I still wish there was a way to revive General Leo. I remember all the crazy rumors back in the infancy of the internet that swore it was possible. None were, but playing the game trying to discover the secret was a feeling I've not had sense.

I also always really thought that Siegfried/Ziegfried was another secret character that could be obtained via the Colosseum in the World of Ruin, but it never came to fruition. He'd have been a fun little addition to the team, though.

I'm really surprised at how fast Banon got dropped from the plot, too. He always seemed like he could be another character that could pop up unexpectedly.

That game had such a great cast both in party and out, would really love to see a remake that actually added these guys in full time. Much how like one version of FFIV allowed you to take any of the previous party members that you wanted as a part of your final party, instead of just the original five.

I'd rather see them do what they did for FFIV on the PSP. That game retained the visuals of the original while still giving them a much needed update. If they did the same for FFVI I can't tell you how fast that I would buy it.

I'd be more than okay with this as well. The PSP updates look much better than the horrible blobs Square put on mobile phones and PC.

yea sorry...i never saw "chibi" graphics while playing old rpgs back in teh day....i understood you couldnt do more then that. I always saw the characters as the Amano art..lets get a true Amano designed remake.

I spent so long trying out random internet rumors. Walking in circles on the veldt 200 times, etc :-(

I'm amazed people want a FFVI in an artstyle like WoFF's (disgusting) or even FFVIIr's. I'd rather FFVI be its own thing and have its own visual identity. Especially considering the settings and themes. Chibi art would clash against what FFVI was about (perception of cutesy imagery vs. themes).

Is it more or less expensive than Final Fantasy XV?

I can't say for FF XV, as it was more expensive because of it's very long development.

SNK worked on 2D Sprites in "HD" for both KOF XII & XIII & those were very expensive to make. And the sprites weren't in HD to begin with; The characters sprites were in 480p.

That's one of the reasons why they switched to 3D for KOF XIV, because 3D was cheaper.

I think this is the FF in most need of a remake. When I was a kid this shit was epic. I'd want it chibi style though like from the PSX anthology version instruction booklet.

Maybe Amano style in battle but they just don't have that charm. I feel like the FF7 remake is going to lose a lot of its light-hearted tone too. WoFF looks like garbage though.

Isn't this what they tried in the iOS port? Or maybe the iOS sprites are another (worse) attempt at the same idea: updating the chibi sprites from the original game. Not saying it couldn't work, but we do have a recent example of it not working.

I'm really surprised at how fast Banon got dropped from the plot, too. He always seemed like he could be another character that could pop up unexpectedly.

I think the reason Bannon got dropped quickly is simply time/resource/whatever constraints (in general, I feel the World of Ruin suffers from not quite connecting to the World of Balance very well) but I've always felt that his total absence is kind of poignant. The Returners were ultimately a pretty inert attempt at opposing the Empire, and if not for our heroes--and mainly for Terra--they would have been crushed like bugs. All through the World of Balance we're led to believe Bannon is an inspirational leader and a tactician and it turns out he was just playing dress-up. It feels a lot like Avalanche in FF7 in that regard.

Man I opened a can of worms by even suggesting a remake in WoFF graphics huh? LOL

I'm playing WoFF at the moment and love the art style however I can see why people wouldn't like it. I guess to clarify a little more I just think if they remake it--it shouldn't be a modern day graphics monster like FF7 remake. It should be it's own game and not try to push graphics.

Yesss. As a kid who first played the game in like '98 or '99 I thought it meant he died. And I found that very fitting thematically. I even liked the notion that it happened offscreen. A year is a long time to cover.

When I got older, it dawned on me during a replay that there is not reason to assume he died, but it's possible. I don't know. The cut from the game is noticeable but it works.

Why can't we have the good ol PS1 JRPG aesthetic again, from Square? :P

I just wish someone would nail that exact sort... aesthetic.
Would love a highend Chrono Cross look.

Lot of painted look and art and predefined views. (thus basically rooms like in old days.)
Combined with well tought tech that takes advantage of self set limitations.

It could be something really special.

Not quite like Avalanche dress up I think. I always read Bannon as fairly pragmatic and fatalistic. He knew that using Terra to get the Espers to cooperate was a long shot. But it was the only shot he had. Arguably the world would have been better if he'd thrown that shot away though.

WOR has lots of poignant callbacks to minor characters in WOB. Interesting that there's essentially nothing related to the Returners....

Also @ Falk really not like Snow. Within a minute of meeting B he has to excuse himself to take a nap. He's tired and not brimming with confidence. Refuse to become his hope 3 times (natch, genji glove) and it's even more evident how tenuous that hope is. He's super hang dog about the whole thing.

I want a 200 million dollar remake of this game on PS5 that looks like Kingsglaive.

Or.. you know, a non butchered version of the game somewhere other than GBA and SNES would be nice.

$200 million?

That kind of amount could be put on a big FF anniversary blowout.

That was a great read, especially the bits about the characters. Terra as a 30 something man would have been a big change, kinda cool though. Also, Locke had Runic originally, crazy.

Unhinged Celes sounds really cool too. The game would have been really dark with some of these changes though.

For a remake I'd go:

-Realistic proportioned characters.

-Whispy painterly shader effect that creates the effect of Amano art come to life.

If they're gonna remake the game, it can't be with chibi anything. That game already exists, so what would be the point?

Push the envelope; try to achieve what they said in the interview. Make it look like a romantic and industrial renaissance world. They were on their way there with the PS1 prerendered movies, but need to push further.

The chibi, bright colored art style I don't think would be appropriate considering the overall theme of the game.

I think a side plot with him in the World of Ruin would have been pretty neat though, for the same reasons. Have him appear a broken, bitter, man that has to be reminded of what it was he was fighting for and that this new world still has a place for him.

From there he could either join your party full time or become a local leader, or whatever other scenario. At the very least it could have given a resolution to The Returners.

At the same time, however, it is rather poignant that neither he or his group don't show up again. Just like ants facing a boot, they were ultimately meaningless to that boot and had no real purpose after they were (most likely) eliminated.

Shit man, FFVI is really depressing.

I'll never give up on General Leo though. I still want to believe!

Except they should make the graphics like World of Final Fantasy. It would fit the game better IMO.
Go away please. I'd prefer it done right. If you actually played the game you would know that would be the opposite of how the story actually is.

Yes. No reason why we can't have realistic proportions to go with this amazing storyline.

Nice article to read. Still my favourite cast in a ff game. Really disappointed that this and ffv never got a enhanced version whether it's a remastered version with better sprites or a full on remake. Celes still best female ff character.

Banon died as Vector is now shut off from the world by the Guardian and then becomes the base of Kefkas tower. Dude is deader than dead.

It'd easy to wonder what we could have got... But something tells me a lot of what made ff6 work was the time line to get it out.

How much more focused of a product could games like ff13 have been if they knew they wouldn't have gotten years worth of extensions.

(Part of the reason I'm being very cautious about 15)

This is one of those games that I would love to know everything about the development like the stuff they reveal in this interview. Scrapped events or things that never got fleshed out.

For example, another Square game, Secret of Mana, when you beat the game and during the credits when the main character drops off the blonde female party member back at town she shakes her head no at him, implying that he asked her something. What was that supposed to mean?

Also, were Gogo, Umaro, and Mog supposed to be extremely mysterious characters on purpose?

—Wow, I don’t think the graphics in FFV went that far, did they?

Sasaki (Hirokatsu): No, I donÂ’t think they did.

Inazawa: Hey, should you really be saying that? (laughs)

Sasaki (Hirokatsu): I donÂ’t know. (laughs)

Tanaka: The magic effects in FFVI are awe-inspiring. Especially the stronger spells, theyÂ’re amazing.

Sasaki (Hirokatsu): Yeah, we kept making them flashier and flashier—maybe even too much….

Oota: ItÂ’s inflation. (laughs)

Sasaki (Hirokatsu): When you see them over and over and get used to them, that initial wow factor wears off, and you just want to keep adding more and moreÂ…!

I found this part of the interview really funny too. One game later they would have the end boss use an attack that destroys the god-damned solar system; sometimes several times in the same battle. Then you had Knights of the Round... Omnislash, etc etc. I feel like they really toned themselves down after that, haha.

Something else people might not be familiar with about 6 is that the Warring Triad have proper names listed in the original concept art by Nomura.

With the Warring Triad now being in FFXIV, they used these names from the concept art to name them, and as such also have movesets relating to the religion their names are based on (Although the Demon hasn't been implemented yet) but Sophia and Sephirot are all designed around Gnosticism and the Kabbalah.

When fighting Sephirot there are adds that are called "Chokmah" and "Binah" which are sephiroth on the qabbalah. Not sure the proper spelling FFXIV used for Chokmah though. My ffxiv screen name is Binah Babalon cause I'm a qabbalah nerd. FF has always used lots of stuff from obscure mythologies/pantheons.

love to read about things which never happened in games. or in general how people struggled in the 80/90s to get their games shipped.

awesome, thanks for the good read!

Great read thank you OP!

I remember back in the day when it was first released I read an interview in a Chinese gaming mag that due to the cartridge limitation they had to start removing assets one by one. They said originally there were more thunder clouds at the title screen that had to be removed to save space.

Amazing read. One bit I liked a lot:

—Can you tell us about Figaro brothers’ backstory?

Tanaka: In the beginning of the planning, Edgar was the stereotypical “sleazeball.” But I thought was too cliched, so I removed that aspect of his personality. As for his love of women, because he lost his Mother as an infant, he has an especially strong attachment to women generally. Moreover, his first crush/love (an older woman—one of his Father’s cousins) was always very firm in telling him he must grow up to be a good man, so Edgar studied with great fervor the art of chivalry. Ultimately, this woman was killed in a political rivalry, and Edgar’s feelings toward her remained forever unrequited. Her spiritedness and lively wit, however, left their mark on Edgar and have influenced his personal vision of the ideal woman. He’s a little bit different from the typical “ladykiller” character because he was written by a woman (me!), so if anyone notices that I’ll be very happy.

Interestingly, each of these names also made it into PS1-era Square games back then, although it was probably a coincidence (since they're mythological names):

- Sephiroth in FFVII obviously
- Zurvan in Chrono Cross
- Sophia in Xenogears

Xenogears' Sophia is hardly a coincidence, Xenogears is balls to the wall Gnosticism...

Ha ha, and while this is here, NO to a remake with WoFF graphics. Give us Amano or give us death.

Well said. I would vomit if they remade VI with WoFF graphics. Just no.

About topic: It's nice reading about the extras. I'm going to have to dig in fully here while I'm not working. I do wish they would have had the Sabin dies scenario, that would have been cool.

This is interesting. I was also under the assumption that he died. I might have to replay the game soon after reading this and analyze these little details.

As I've said a million times, if there were a 3D remake I would hope they'd keep the world but go with a cell shaded art style over "realism". But in modern SE's hands I don't know if I'd trust them to do it, at least internally, they've released very little over the last 10 years that instills faith in me that they wouldn't screw it up.

Man that Sabin death would have destroyed me.

Yeah, that would've sucked... Hard. Sabin was always "my character" in FFIII/VI. But having the possiblity of losing characters would've helped play into the heaviness of the catastrophe that happened though.

Vanish + Doom me if old

*Vanish + X-Zones everyone*
