Final Fantasy VI up on Steam

The mobile version has the highest quality music, the best implementation of ATB, the nicest battle backgrounds, and nice portraits to go with the dialogue. Some people hate the new sprite work, but nearly everything else is an upgrade. And even the upgraded sprites are debatable, as they are considerably more detailed.

For me the most awful part is the UI. From Steam page:

Hm... I've passed on the mobile port but may bite

My classic controller broke, so I can't play it on Wii VC anymore

I can't help but laugh at those sprites. They seriously look so ridiculously bad, every time I see them I'm surpried again anyone looked at those an thought "Yep, that's good enough".

Anyone know if the FFV port ever got modded to replace the sprites/assets? Because as much as I'd love to have VI on PC, i sure as hell don't want it like this

Oh bollocks. I thought it was up, as in up for sale, on Steam. Now I'm disappointed. It sure looks like shit, but it's still my favorite FF.

I would like to hear the opinion of someone who hasn't played the original on this.
Still dont get peoples problem with this version, the new sprites are fucking beautiful. I wish this was on consoles,or my dream the vita too. Squeenix leaving money on the table again.

I would also like this version on the vita. PSX version runs like ass unless you manually change the speed in settings. Even then it's not optimal.

This game is probably one of the biggest gaps I have, it seems there's no decent way to play it without a GBA or SNES.

The sprites stand out horribly against the background if its the original assets and the new assets look abysmal. They look way too smooth and don't mix well at all, instead looking like something out of rpg maker. The best example is from FF5:

My favorite game of all time but I refuse to buy it when it looks like that.

I even bought the PSX version off PSN, knowing how the load times are on that version.

Less derailing of the thread, I hope that whoever buys it does enjoy the game.

I honestly think all the sprites other than the characters sprites are an improvement.

Whoever's doing the FFRK sprites needs to do a makeover on these character spritesheets at 4x the pixels tbqh.

Man. It's like three different artists were told what to draw but had no contact with each other and then they just packaged it all up.

Cross posting for those not aware of the fantastic additions to this port.

The mobile port is really good!

I'm playing right now, but the fixed tons of stuff.

Yes, the classic sprite art is much better, I agree.

But this one is good too. Here some of the most notable enhancements:
-Cyan is usable now as he charges his Bushido actively, not manually
-It uses the GBA localization which is much richer than the original Woosley translation, which although still good, he was limited with cart sizes and was rushed.
-It has all the GBA enhancements--new dungeon, new Espers, and new equipment.
-Menu system is much better for battling.
-Much better character menus--you can see what Esper they have equipped and when party members level up without going into their individual status menus
-Music is SNES quality, unlike the GBA version
-Optional hints and journal so you can keep track of your progress.
-Auto battle! Helps in longer dungeons.
-Bug fixes--No more Vanish plus Doom. Plus the GBA bug fixes, such as Magic Evade actually working.
-Bestiary
-Music player!

It's a really great port. Yes the graphics hurt, but the overall enhancements make it worth it.

I still wonder what the hell they were thinking when they made these new sprites. They're fucking awful

I don't get the intense hate. I looks exactly like an upscale of the original game, so to me it in no way looks worse than the SNES game, and I do pixel art for a living. Save for UI, it looks the exact same in terms of wonky, stiff sprites, and the painterly enemies. The player sprites always clashed like crazy inside battles.

I mean, it could always POTENTIALLY have been given better art, but my point is it doesn't at all look worse to me.

Can't wait! This is my fourth version of the game to play through and I look forward to playing it with new visuals and tweaks. I look forward to differences, both good and bad. At least it would get me to play it again. I must be a horrible fan!

This looks really good...

...except those PC & NPC character models are so hideous. Why would you do everything else so well and then fuck up the things you'll be watching the most of. -_-

disgusting

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Quite possibly my GoAT, I can't do it wrong by playing this monstrosity. Will possibly purchase after original sprites/UI is patched back in. But even then, I already own like 4 versions of the game, and can emulate if need be.

Is everyone complaining about the sprites avid fans of this game, and the sprites tarnish the memory of the game?

I'm looking from the outside in having never played the original and I don't think it looks all that bad.

Give it a month and I'm sure there will be mods anyway. I'll probably end up getting it at some point.

What you've described sounds a lot like Final Fantasy VII...the original I mean. Partly why we needed a remake... The art styles in the PS1 version are all over the place...

People get mad when you change things they loved when they were kids.

I don't get the Cyan criticism. He was one of my main 4 in my first playthrough and the game went fine.

FFVI is just easy sunday jog all around.

I enjoy that their was an age gate on it to make sure that no one who's old enough to have played the original could possibly see the store page and have a stroke from those fucking garbage sprites.

Smart liability prevention.

You can change that and select the classic UI.

You have wait until his SwdTech/Bushido charges up.

Here, it charges up passively when selected. Much, much better as you can issue commands to other characters while he charges up, especially if you're using the Active version of ATB.

Love those new sprites, definetely much better than original. But yeah, that UI could be better. Man, I need to finish Witcher 3 and Trails in the Sky and jump into FFV and then VI :)
