Final Fantasy VI up on Steam

We really need a definitive version of this game to be released on modern hardware.
Every version they put out seems to be gimped in some regard.

Just re-release the original snes version up on ps store/xbl/steam Square I beg of thee!

My personal preference for FF6 is with a patched SNES rom. There are IPS patches for fixing the magic evade bug, crash bugs, etc.

Played most of the game like this on my Nexus 7 with a PS controller before I lost it during an O.S. update...accidentally wiped and had whiffed my backup... :(

I'm very attached to the original look of FF VI, and really can't stand the sprites in IOS version. However, I really like the character portraits. They go a long way to helping capture the feel of each character.

Sooo...I own the PS1 version and will probably play it on my VITA someday. Is that considered the best version of the game then?

Is there an update for the GBA localization?

Put out a mod to replace the images with the originals and I'll buy it. But the new style sucks so much. Dragon Quest got a better treatment all around. Even I-III with its low res sprites look better than the shit FF got.

I just want a remake that looks like the PSP games did:

Edit: The reason why FFV and FFIV look so odd is because the sprites were just re-rendered and not redrawn.

This is the craziest part. It's not like they don't know how to remake 2D FF games. They did a great job on the PSP games, but somewhere along the line they just forgot what the hell art direction was.

How developers aren't able to see the downgrade will always baffle me. Ff6 snes sprites still look charming and full of life but the new sprites just look lifeless. I love ff6 and wouldn't put a penny towards this.

I seriously hate Square Enix for giving FFV and FFVI, some of the best FF in the series such a terrible treatment and zero love into remaking them. I'm not even asking for something along the lines of FFIV on DS. Just give me a true handheld remake/port that retains the 2D sprite but in more details and higher resolution which doesn't make me want to vomit and UI that is not designed for mobile touchscreen.

Those are what FFV and FFVI remakes should strive for.

Square-Enix has really been screwing around with the Canadian prices of Final Fantasy games lately.

Some like FF3, 4, 13, and 13-2 are about 12% higher than the US price, which makes then quite a bit cheaper after exchange.

Others like Final Fantasy V, VII, VIII, and After Years are offered at 40--50% over the US price, making them a rip off.

Good article about why these FFV and VI remakes are so bad. Gets a little technical but an interesting read.

Thanks, that's an incredibly deep article, but worth reading (or at the very least skimming to relevant parts).

From the summary:

"Maybe I'm just anal, but all these little touches constitute craftsmanship, and I think a legendary game series like Final Fantasy deserves better than a rushed port job that violates every single best practice I can think of. If a bottom-feeder like me can figure out all these techniques just by messing around, then a huge AAA company holding the IP reigns to some of the most important games in RPG history should know better."

Look, it's still FFVI (IMO the greatest game ever made) so even a shitty version of it is great...but maaaaaaan, it looks so bad.

I've seen some talk about the rom version and it sounds good. Why not just play that? I have the GBA version but no gameboy anymore and the iOS version but I just can't play games on my phone, and this looks absolutely horrible with that UI.

Where the fuck were you "do-it-like-PSP!" Final Fantasy fans at when those games actually came out on PSP, lol. Those games were getting tore up something fierce with the same concerns the mobile ports are getting now.

"Looks like a bad flash game"
"Did they make this in RPG Maker?"
"Ugly graphics"

I don't remember anyone complaining about the UI though.

Does this version have the extra dungeon? Dragon's Den I believe it's called. If it does I will buy it, if it doesn't I won't because I already have a version of the game that doesn't have the additional content.

It has everything the GBA version had introduced.

If you get the GBA version, there's a couple of patches which fix colors and sound. It's quite nice! Unfortunately they never re-sel that version for whatever reason.

iOS UI on Steam? I hate calling developers lazy because I understand how much work goes into making games, but this is absolutely lazy.

Only in the most nerdiest of circles. The PSP remakes were well received critically if I recall which isn't entirely true with some of these iOS ports.

Real talk though, Square offloads these garbage ports to teams of interns and artists with clashing styles just to plant a flag in platforms they don't respect.

No doubt the individuals who actually developed this port work hard and are talented. The blame should go towards whoever in management made the decision to do a bare bones port of the mobile version, and to only dedicate the smallest amount of resources to the project as possible.

Now this is gorgeous. It's much like what Konami did for the PSP ports of Genso Suikoden I + II.

When we find ourselves longing for Konami levels of polish and care, then we know we have a problem.

Thankfully, there are other places to play FFVI, but it really is a missed opportunity on SE's part. To those saying that it looks fine or even good, I'm honestly not able to tell if you are kidding or not. If I had to conjecture, I would conjecture that SE analyzed the art styles of other popular mobile games and tried to do something in a similar style to make the game appealing to the masses. The character graphics would look right at home on a top ten list in the app store.

The gba update and especially the altared Cyan all sounds really good, but yeah, I gotta be ine if those "eww at the graphics" guys. The enemy sprites look awesome, but the character ones...yuck.

A modded version, I would definitely consider.
